Letter to the CEO
Dear CEO,
My name is Emily Wilson. I'm seventeen years old and in my last year at school. Next year I'm going to study law. As a final year school project for our social sciences course, we have to write a letter to an influential figure in our lives. I've chosen you, the CEO of Upperware, and I'm writing this letter to share your impact on my life.
The ladies in my family have loved Upperware for many generations, in fact, sometimes I used to think that they were obsessed with your products. Containers, drink bottles, colanders, food preparation tools - the list seemed endless.
As a sales agent for your products, my mom hosted many Saturday afternoon parties at our house. Ladies would arrive promptly at 2pm, excited to see what domestic wonders would be revealed. Containers of all shapes and sizes were displayed, stacked artfully on a table for all to admire.
My mom would proudly show off the latest thing. Like your special container lids. She'd fill a container with water, seal the lid and boldly flip the container over. Not a single drop was spilled. "Remarkable" ladies would gasp as they urgently scribbled their orders onto an Upperware order form.
Such enthusiasm.
But it's not all rosy is it, dear CEO? The truth is, even when you knew, you never told those ladies about the poison. The chemicals inside your containers that could be absorbed into their bodies and lead to cancer or infertility. Nor have you owned up to the fact that your products are choking our oceans, killing marine life and suffocating our beautiful world.
You might argue that Upperware is not the problem in the ocean, that it's other plastics like shopping bags or fishing nets. But I believe that all plastics manufacturers have a responsibility to clear up the mess, especially when they have money to spare - like the hundreds of millions of dollars in profit that you make every year. It's like, in your pursuit of money, you are destroying the world that created you.
As much as Upperware was a joy to my mom and her friends, so it is a misery to me and my friends. My generation is faced with the outfall of your carelessness and we have to sort out the mess without your help. Go figure.
That's why I'm going to study law - because I'm passionate about doing the right thing and holding corporations to account. After I'm admitted as a lawyer, your company will be my first class action suit, I plan to be your very own Erin Brockovich.
I hope you're still the CEO when I qualify because I'll be following you while I study. I intend to be really, truly ready for our first serious conversation.
In the meantime, I'll look forward to meeting you in the future.
Yours sincerely,
Emily Wilson.
