Twenty-seven
Of course Ben had suggested that the both of them meet at his house. He had begged her for so long that he only saw it fitting that they end things there. Yes, it was going to end, at least that’s what Ella thought.
--
The air was moist and thick as she sat down on the vibrant green colored couch which was the only colorful thing in his house. Her eyes skimmed down the numerous photo frames that decorated the living room walls. There were newspaper articles scattered all over the coffee table and underneath the tabled laid a ball of yarn. It wasn’t the nicest house, but it was doable and quite cozy.
Ella criss-crossed her legs into a pretzel formation, she always preferred to be a little childish at times. Her blue eyes danced across the room as her anxiety levels soared high.
Benjamin walked in with two cups of coffee and sat across from her in a brown chair. Ella stopped herself laugh as she realized that almost everything in the house was brown.
He must like the color brown a lot, and she couldn’t help but like the color as well – his brown eyes were her favorite shade.
Benjamin reached over the coffee table to hand Ella her cup of coffee. He watched as she took it ever so delicately, her hands gracing the sides of the white mug.
She caught him staring at her with adoration filled to the brim of his coffee colored eyes. She let a small smile slip onto her face as she took a sip.
He shifted in his chair before saying, “I’m glad you came.”
The smile quickly vanished and her body stiffened. “I came to end things.” She said harshly.
“I’m sor-“ She stopped him, “Please, I’m begging you, just get to the point.”
Her words stung him, but he hid it well. Ben simply nodded, “As you wish.”
He took a deep breath as his fingers tapped nervously against the mug in his hands. “Okay, I’ll just come right and say it then. You-“ He stopped, his words were stuck in the back of his throat, he coughed awkwardly.
“You reminded me of my deceased sister.” He said in a rush.
After a few minutes of complete silence Ella replied with, “You’re fucked up.”
“Ella I-“
“No, shut up Benjamin!” She suddenly yelled as she gripped tightly onto the mug. “You disgust me. I can’t believe you would lie about something like that.”
“I’m no-“
Again Ella cut him off, not allowing him to get a word in. “I’m tired of your bullshit, Ben. I’m tired of your excuses. And most of all, I’m tired of loving you.” She suddenly let go of the cup and watched as the pieces fall apart – just like her heart.
She sat there in silence before adding, “I’ll give you one last chance to tell me the truth, why did you all of a sudden ignore me?”
Ben was in complete shock as he stared at the broken mug. His lips twitched once more, “I-I.”
He had said the truth but he knew that no matter what he said she wouldn’t believe him.
So he lied, “I couldn’t deal with you and your depression.”
And with that he watched her leave – forever.
