Thirty-five
Sometimes the pain was everlasting; unfortunately Ella had to watch her brother throw up into the toilet because of it.
She knew when she saw the amount of beer bottles laying around in his room that he was grieving yet again.
Ella held her breath as she leaned against the bathroom door, the smell was unbearable, but she knew she couldn’t leave her brother alone.
After a while the puking stopped, but he wasn’t done grieving yet. After he cleaned himself up he wandered into the kitchen, where she was. She could see the guilt swim in his blue eyes as she threw some of the bottles into the trash can.
She could feel his eyes bore a hole into the side of her face, and she dreaded the words he was about to say. So she pretended he wasn’t there.
But he said it anyways.
“It’s been eight years, Ella.” His voice was low and scratchy.
She breathed in while her hands gripped onto the granite countertop. “I’m aware.”
He snorted, “You sure as hell don’t act like it. You can’t fool me, Ella. I may have been drunk but I’m not dumb. You’re with that stupid Ben guy again.”
“Ben has nothing to do with this.” She snapped.
Ty couldn’t contain himself; his foot came into contact with the bottom cabinet door before he spun around.
He yanked on his black hair as the veins on his forehead appeared, “I know you fucking know Ella.” His voice was sharp and full of venom, causing Ella to jump. “Ha, I didn’t want to believe it at first, but his name seemed so familiar.” His laugh scared her as it echoed throughout the house. “You must’ve known all along, didn’t you?”
Her body was now shaking uncontrollably, “Please don’t do this.” She choked out, blinking back the tears.
Ty slammed his fist on the counter, incredibly close to where her hands were. “Don’t do what?” He shouted into her ear.
She jumped, “Ty-“
“No, I should be the one pleading.” Taking her by the shoulders, he spun her around, “You fucking knew I hated that bastard, and it was for a good damn reason to.” He began to shake her by her shoulders.
Shutting her eyes, she started to whimper. His gaze then traveled down to the red marks on her arms. His eyes widen and he abruptly backed away from her. Ty sighed heavily, completely exhausted. “Ella.” His voice sounded strained as he said her name.
She slightly relaxed, but not for long.
“I’m sorry. I just- after she- and him –“ He soon lost his voice and couldn’t seem to find the words anymore because all he could think about was her.
She opened her eyes; her brother looked like a mess as she took in his appearance. He looked completely crushed, and it killed her even more to know it was all her fault.
His sad eyes met hers, “Why did you do it?” He asked desperately.
“I don’t know.”
And it was the truth.
She had known all along who Benjamin was, but somehow she had forgotten about Ben's and Ty's past together. Well, she didn't technically forget about it, she made herself forget.
Because you can’t help who you love, right?
