Chapter 16
They pulled up to an old apartment in Stanford. Dean got out of the car quickly, not talking to Cas not even making eye contact with him. Cas was still confused, but he got out of the car and followed Dean down an alley to another apartment, where he knocked on the door. Dean didn't wait for an answer he just opened the door and walked in.
"Sammy! I'm here dude." Dean looked at the house, Sam was doing better off than he had thought.
"Dean?" A tall skinny man with long hair appeared. Despite his size he looked very young. He was confused furrowing his eyebrows, "What are you doing here? And do you know how to knock? Wait forget about knocking, who the hell is that guy?"
Dean looked back at Cas briefly, then turned back to Sam, "What do you mean 'what am I doing here' You called me, told me I needed to come see you."
Sam shook his head, "What? No I didn't, What's up with the dude in the trench coat?"
Dean ran his fingers through his hair and exhaled roughly, "This is uh Castiel, my roommate."
"You got a roommate? What you tired of not ever having food or electricity?" Sam walked into the kitchen and came out with three beers.
"Don't play dumb, I know you put an ad out." Dean took two beers and handed one to Cas.
Cas just stared at it. He knew if he were to drink it, he would be able to taste each and every individual particle it was made out of. But he opened it and took a sip anyways.
Sam laughed and took a long drink of his beer, "I honestly don't know what your talking about right now man"
"You got Alzheimer's or something? First you don't remember trying to get me a roommate, now you don't even remember calling me about you nightmare's?" Dean wasn't laughing he had a small smile, but it was fake and his voice was serious. He was concerned for his little brother.
"Wait, what?" Sam's voice went from playful to serious real fast, "How do you know about my dreams?"
"Wait you seriously don't remember?" Dean looked towards Cas then back to Sam, you could see the worry in his on his face as if it were literally written on his forehead.
"What exactly did I tell you Dean?" Sam kept his straight face, hard eyes staring at his brother, now Sam was concerned for himself as well.
Cas was already running things through his mind, trying to imagine exactly what could have happen. Going over the parts of the plan he knew, the angels didn't tell him very much, just that he needed to get Sam and Dean together. Maybe this was suppose to happen. Of course it was supposed to happen, everything happens according to plan right?
"You just told me about your dreams of Jess, and how you've been having them more and more lately. You said they were the same every time and you said they felt so real." Dean stared at Sam with the same facial expression Sam had on his face, "Sammy, you really don't remember?" Dean's eyes went soft.
At the sight of his brother's eyes, Sam's eyes too went soft. "I don't know man, I could have been drunk or something, you know how things go, it's a party school," he tried shaking it off, trying not to think about it. "I'm glad you're here though man."
"Yeah me too, it's good to see my dorky little brother doing so well for himself." Dean smiled and drank the last of his beer.
"Yeah a dorky little brother that can kick your ass," Sam laughed, his dimples showing as he brushed his hair out of his eyes.
"Ha yeah right, you wish," Dean playfully hit Sam in the shoulder, "Bitch"
Sam turned and hit Dean harder than Dean hit him, "Jerk"
Cas was still sitting on the couch trying not to make weird faces as he chugged the rest of his beverage.
Sam walked over and stuck his hand out, "I'm Sam Winchester."
Cas looked at Sam's hand then to Dean. He shook Sam's hand awkwardly, "I know," He cleared his throat as Dean looked at him strangely, "Your brother talks about you often."
"Really?" Sam cocked his head a little and glanced towards Dean, "So uh how long you guys been living together?"
"Why do you have to make it sound weird?" Dean's heart beated a little faster.
"Umm, I didn't know I was, sorry," Sam's apology was not sincere, but more sarcastic.
"Anyways," Dean continued, "where's this Jess I've been hearing so much about?"
"She had a class, she should be home any minute," Sam smiled at the thought of his girlfriend. "Hey Dean listen, I was planning going and getting a ring for her, then tonight I was thinking we could go to dinner, and since you guys are here you could come, but I want to purpose tonight." He was blushing hard with his hands in his pockets kicking the toe of his show on the ground.
"Alright Sammy!" Dean was smiling big as he pat his brother on the back.It was the smile that usually came on his face when he spoke about his brother, a proud smile.
"I was going to go alone to pick out a ring, but now that you're here," he shrugged and picked ther beer bottle off the table, "maybe you could come with."
"Yeah no problem, Cas can come too right?" Dean looked at Cas who had his eyes locked on Dean. He didn't want to look away, but when he did he looked straight down at his feet.
Sam nodded as if to say "duh" and walked into the kitchen.
"When do you wanna go?" Dean called out to him.
"I'm thinking after Jess gets here, I want you to meet her first." Sam smiled at the thought of her again.
Just then, in perfect timing, there was a small voice calling from the front door, "Hey Sam, I just looked up who got the highest score on the-" her voice stopped and her face turned pale as she saw the two strange men standing in her living room."Sam!"
"Hey hey," Sam came out of the kitchen quickly with his hands out reassuringly, "Sorry Jess, this is my brother, and his... roommate."
Dean stuck out his hand for her to shake but she wrapped him in a hug, Dean was confused by he hugged back lightly, "So this is the famous Dean I always hear about, it's good to see you in person."She let her grip go and just stared at him, her smile brightly complementing her eyes, and her shiny blond hair sending scents of strawberry shampoo through the air.
"In person?" Dean asked a little confused by the wording of her sentence.
"Well, I mean Sam has a couple of pictures of you guys in our bedroom," When she said this Cas remembered the pictures in Dean's room, "I didn't mean to sound weird," she laughed and went to shake Cas' hand.
"Hello, I'm Castiel," Cas shook her hand, he couldn't help but smile at her smile, it was contagious and her hands were so small compared to his.
"Wow that sounds like an angel name," She smiled and went to stand next to Sam. Dean and Cas just stared at each other with wide eyes and Dean nervously laughed. It was silent for a while and everyone just kind of stared.
"So what were you saying when you walked through the door?" Sam looked at Jess and she wrapped her arm behind him.
"Oh right," She jumped a little and the smile on her face got brighter, "I was looking and you got one of the highest scores on the LSAT." She kissed him on the cheek then looked towards Dean and Cas, "He got a 174!"
"Is that good?" Dean wasn't sure what the LSAT was or how hard Sam had to work for it.
"Considering, the highest possible score is 180, yeah it's good, scary good." She stared up at Sam her blue eyes shining and her smile showed she was proud.
"Wow Sammy, congrats man, I'm surprised you didn't tell me about this," Dean was a little hurt, but he was sure not to show it.
"It's not that big of a deal," Sam half smiled and looked at his feet.
"Don't be so modest Sam," She squeezed his arm and wrapped her hands around his.
"Hey, we should all celebrate tonight.. Over dinner," Cas chimed in, giving an excuse to go out remembering Sam's plans.
"That's a great idea Cas, we could go to that new fancy restaurant in town." Sam was glad the whole thing had been brought up, and he was glad Cas took the opportunity.
"Right," Dean smiled, "But Cas and I don't have anything nice to wear so, we should probably buy nicer shirts or something," He was looking at Sam.
"That's a good idea," Sam said starting to smile, "I should probably go with to show where the best stores are."
"Then it's settled," Jess said excitedly, "You guys go get shirts and I'll be here getting ready," She jumped up and kissed Sam, "Have fun don't be gone too long."
With that they all headed out the door to the impala. Cas and Dean were proud of themselves for setting it up like that. The conversation just happen to flow so perfectly and Sam knew Jess hadn't suspected a thing.
