Chapter 8: The Real Ky

Hey Ty. It's Ky. Your boxer friend. Um, I got your number from Erin. She told me to tell you that she has her ways. Um, anyway my sister said I can bring a friend to cheer practice this evening. If you promise not to be creepy she will take us to dinner. I don't want to be the only guy so text me back. Oh it's Kyle by the way.

That was the very long text message that I woke up to. I have a lot of questions.

One: Why does Erin have my number?
Two: How did Erin get my number?
Three: Why cheerleading practice?

How much do you eat?

Was the next text message I received.

I'm sorry if this isn't Ty.

I threw my phone across my room. Why is this kid texting me so much?

To my surprise my phone started to ring. There is no physical way that this guy is calling me right? You can't put subtitles on a phone call.

"Hi, may I speak to Tyreek?" A girl's voice came over the phone.

I had to check the numbers to see if it was the one Ky was texting me on. It was.

"This is him?" I tripped over every word that left my mouth. I have no idea who I am talking to, I am terrible with phone calls.

"Are you coming out with us tonight?"

I hung up the phone. I refuse.

Did you just hang up on my sister? Low blow bro.

I am about to turn off the texting option on my phone. To my surprise, my phone started ringing, again. The good news is I now know I hung up on his sister and not his mother. I am better prepared to answer.

"I'm sorry." I said immediately.

"I swear, you are more antisocial than the rumors let on." The girl said. "Do you want to come over before practice? I want to meet the guy who keeps protecting my little brother?"

I was at a loss for words. She sounds so sweet. Like an idiot I nodded as if she could see me through the phone.

"Hello?"

"I'm here." I stuttered out.

"I'll just text you the address." There was the last words she said before disconnecting the phone.

This took a different turn than expected. I quickly received an address with a requested time of arrival. I mean I have nothing better to do.

I quickly changed to leave. I decided to try to make peace with my dad before leaving. Unfortunately I searched all around the house for him and couldn't find him. When I checked mom's room I found yet another note on the piano. At this point reading these has become second nature.

I knew dad signed me up for the boxing team, but I didn't know if I quit I would be expelled from school. It just seems unfair. I agreed to come to this school to lift weights. I did not come here to box.

As much as I wanted to crumble up the letter, I know that wouldn't be fair to my dad or mom. I decided that it would be better if I just leave.

The drive to Ky's house wasn't long, but I did take the time to take in the scenery. Dad's childhood home town. I wonder how much has changed since he was last here. I wonder who would know him as Tyreek and not as T-Rex, or was he always T-Rex.

When I reached Ky's house I was greeted by him and his usual bright smile. I don't think I ever seen someone so happy to see me before.

Ky quickly began to drag me around his house. Lucky for me, his how was the third of the size of mine. He pulled me in front of a door and made a very exaggerated X using his arms as he viscously shook his head no. Reading his body language I could only assume that this room was either his parents' or his sister's. Either way I am not going to enter it.

I followed Ky to his room. Unfortunately the first thing I saw when I entered was a giant poster of my father hanging on his wall. I immediately felt the anger build up inside of me as I saw my father living the happiest moment of his life, winning the championship belt. I tried to leave the room, but Ky was trying to position me in front of the poster to take a picture of me.

"Ky stop." I pleaded. The more he grabbed me the angrier I became.

Ky began to make these weird faces while he flexed. I know that he wanted me to take a picture, but he has to see that I don't want to.

I tried to walk by Ky again, but he grabbed my arm again. This time he triggered my rage. I turned around and grabbed the top of the poster and ripped it off of the wall. I felt Ky pull on my arm. I turned and tried to punch him with a wide hook.

Ky managed to duck down, dodging the punch, and grabbed me in a bear hug slamming me up against the wall.

I pushed off against the wall and ended up falling forward. The fight ended with me laying on top of Ky. It's not that Ky was hurt, but I just felt the real Ky for the first time.

Now I understand all of the gay jokes.
