Chapter 3: Stepping In

I spent all night reliving my dad's perfect life. The one he had before I ruined it. My birthday is my mother's death day. Happy fucking birthday to me.

My thoughts from the night before kept me distracted with the first half of the school day. At least it did up into the lunch hour.

I found myself standing behind the kid who usually gets beat up by King James and his goons. He seemed really quiet as he just pointed to the food he wanted. Shoot if I knew we could just point I would have stopped communicating with the lunch staff years ago.

I watched as this kid stopped in his tracks at the sight of James. Normally I would ignore the issue but I couldn't help but hear my dad's nagging voice in the background.

You stepped in right?

I failed to see how stepping in will help with anything. Stepping in will require me to talk to people and I do not want to do that.

Still, the moment I saw the fear in the kid's eyes when he noticed James across the cafeteria, I found myself stepping in. I found myself putting my hands on his shoulder to get his attention. When he looked up at me I motioned for him to follow me to my usual table. He silently followed, maybe this wasn't a bad idea.

When we finally reached our table my Power Puff friends kept staring at us. I watched as the kid gave a light wave to them, before sitting across from me.

Though I was enjoying the silence I could tell that he was uncomfortable. Maybe because the girls kept staring at him. I guess they liked what they saw. When he isn't crying his eyes had this hazel color, which matched his curly brown hair. He seemed very timid, I could tell by the sideways glances he would give to the girls.

"Use your words. Tell them to stop staring at you." I encouraged. I mean I like silence, but the kid hasn't said a word since sitting down.

He gave me a half smile before pulling out a piece of paper. As he wrote I could see the curiosity of the Power Puff Girls reach its peak. When he slid the paper to me I decided to read the text aloud. "Hi. My name is Kyle. I am unable to talk but I am really good at reading lips."

Oh. He is mute.

My rage got the better of me as I crumbled up the piece of paper. Those surfer jack asses were messing with a deaf guy. For what?

"Ask him if he knows sign language." Bubbles said.

My thought process was interrupted. These girls are actually attempting to have a conversation with this kid. Bubbles started to move her hands into weird positions so fast that she looked like a modern day anime character. To my surprise Kyle nodded and basically started doing the same thing.

"What are you guys saying?" I asked.

"I am telling Ky our names." Bubbles said. "Unlike you, Tyreek, Ky actually asked. Oh, he also rather be called Ky rather than Kyle."

"How do you know my name?" I asked.

The girls didn't have to answer because Ky did it for them. Within seconds he pulled out a folder with a picture of my father holding the championship belt. I look just like him.

The smile on Ky's face rivaled that of my fathers. He began to do these weird hand signs to the girls.

Stepping in was a horrible decision. Now I have to deal with these four.
