" Ellie!! " Francis screamed.
It was about 8 in the night. Where have they both gone?
" Eddie!! " he screamed again. cupping his hands near his mouth.
He turned around. That enormous castle loomed behind him like a deadly ghost. Build in 1874. It was now his families turn to spend some time in it. Fluctuations with the wales historical committee was not a major problem. Since, this was written in his great-grandfather's will, that the castle should be bestowed upon the next progeny. But what does that matter in front of the current problem. Edmund and Elizabeth were missing!
" Maggie!! Maggie!!! Have you seen them yet? " Francis asked to her beloved.
It was almost dark as a cave. No hindering of light. Winds flowed at a steady speed as if preparing for something.
" This is my fault. I shouldn't have allowed them to leave " said Francis.
" Not your fault Francis. It's halloween. They must have gone to the village " said Maggie.
" No! That's even dangerous." said Francis. A gloom set into his face, draining him of his facial colour. Maggie looked worriedly at Francis. She took his hands in him and tried to comfort him. But Maggie herself was tensed, Eddie and Ellie were out for 3 hours now.
" They'll be alright Francis. Don't you worry " said Maggie assuringly
" It not the environment my dear, it's nature that scares me. The candles, they say that the candles were spotted in the village " said Francis,
" Oh don't be hysteric Francis, they are just legends. " said Maggie
Francis said nothing, he knew it was pointless to base his fears into reality.
" Dad!! Mom!! We are here!!! " came a scream.
Francis turned and saw there 5 year old daughter running towards him. Oh what a relief this was! Behind Ellie came the tall and dark-haired 15 year boy Edmund.
" Where in the gods name were you?! " asked Francis angrily. Ellie got scared, she went towards her mother, who hugged her dear daughter.
" Edmund how many damn time have I told you not to stay out of house when it is dark!! " screamed Francis.
Edmund flinched at his father angry actions.
" Do you know what roams around here? They come to take you away my boy!! They are like bandits, they will hunt for your sou-- "
" Francis enough!! " said Maggie, Ellie was clutching her hips very tightly. Francis looked at Maggie, who was glaring at him. He nodded his head and walked away. But he knew, his father knew, his grandfather knew. The candles always came. In silent night, like murderers they hid in the corners of each buildings, waiting for their victims to turn.
It was, now, midnight. The castle was sleeping. Today had been quite a feast. Francis had forgotten about his worries. Drunk and happy, he gave all the servants a night-off to celebrate. But now he slept, sober and satisfied. Maggie and he, slept on the lower floor while Eddie and Ellie had separate rooms opposite to each other on the first floor. It was Maggie's idea to let Ellie sleep alone.
' She needs to learn on how to be independent ' she had said, and Ellie had happily taken the guest room.
As Francis shifted in his bed, facing the half-opened door. The gleam of a light stuck his eyeballs. He frowned and opened his eyes,
' Is it Edmund? That kid needs to be spoken to ' he thought. Then shifted his eyes away from the light. He touched Maggie, he always needed to. His worst dream was to lay beside her corpse. But she was alive. Closing his eyes, he began to dream again.
Not 20 minutes had passed when, he again turned to face the door, the lights were still on!. Francis had been cherishing the moments of how he and Maggie met but this light had brought him back. He looked at the light. It faded and then gleamed.
' He left the window open! ' the thought struck him square in his mind. The panic returned, the thoughts gathered, as the mind took the final step to bring the picture of those candle in front of his eyes. With a sudden, but slow, wave he pushed away his sheets. Wearing his slippers he walked towards the light.
He opened his door fully, only to notice that the light had gone up. He made his way upstairs, climbing fast. A sudden eerie noise began to float in the air, the noise of a quivering, crying woman. A sound of a hurt sparrow, a sound of a dying dog. The sound of those candles.
His pace quickened, the lights had gone towards Edmunds room. He rushed towards the door. Not a single thought hindered, he knew the corpse candle was a myth. Half-sure and Half-not. He stood between the balance. But this was not the time to take sides.
He opened the door, with a squeaking sound. Looking at Edmunds bed, a sudden shock gripped him. The light were coming from the orb-like balls of light. They were flaming yellow with orange boundaries and a blue tip. There were four of those haunted lights. They were burning bright flame. Almost blinding Francis, the fear kicked in. Sweat began to pour, He fell down on the ground, the legends were true!
He began to plead, to let his family live. But he noticed the stain on bedsheet. Dark red, as if
" Blood! " said Francis quiveringly, However it was not jus blood, it was blood which was burnt.
He staggered forth, the candle burned more. He could see Edmunds body floating in mid-air, his hands straight beside and head up. Blood was flowing from his mouth and nose. The candles were closing in.
" Stop! Please! Don't ! " he pleaded but they kept closing in. A shiny sparkle came from Edmunds mouth, it floated as the candles collided with each other.
Francis could hold no longer. He rushed towards Eddie's body, touching it but the candles aggravated. They began to elongate, slowly. Forming fully fledged candles. Francis rushed out of the door in panic. He was about to go down when,
" Francis!!!" screamed Maggie,
Francis began to rush down when,
" Dad!!" screamed Ellie,
Francis was stuck!
He slammed his fists on the wood. They had come for both of them!!
He rushed for Ellie, She was in the corner of the room. The candles had surrounded her. Francis came in.
" Ellie " he screamed,
" Dad!! " cried Ellie
Francis grabbed on of the candle, he hand burnt!! with agonising pain he left it. He grabbed Ellie as the candles parted in shock.
Both of them rushed down, the candle following them, they were about to eat all of their souls!! Not one was staying alive. Francis and Ellie rushed down. But Maggie had ceased screaming. Francis opened the door. Maggie was torn to shreds! Blood spilled on the wall. He quickly closed it. Ellie didn't see.
They rushed out of the house, the candle still behind. When Francis remembered the poem!!
' They wander alone, dark at night
Behind every corner, it's only them you will find
If you want them to begone you have to search for a hoard of one of their kind '
The poem came into him. Sparking his mind with possibilities.
" One of their kind " he repeated,
They were running. Hayward, hiding from the candles. The candles had turned blue-green now. Flames becoming redder and redder
" We need to find, one of their kind " he said aloud
" We should go to the village dad" said Ellie,
Francis looked at her, for a moment his face glared at her. Ellie was sure something happened to her father.
" That's absolutely right!! Light we need other lights " he said,
He grabbed Ellie in his arms and ran down to the village.
" Help!! Somebody!! " He screamed
" What is it Francis? " Asked Harry
" The lights, they are here! " Said Francis
" Oh c'mon man, they are legends. Look it's Halloween, it's always pretty scary. " Said Harry
" No, please believe me " said Francis,
" Please " said Ellie,
Alex stood up,
" We should check it out " said Alex
" Whatever man, I am telling you it nothing " said Harry
" Anyway let's do it " said Alex,
Harry shrugged his shoulders, clearly that man was drunk again. His servants had been down here and said it. Spilled it. He smiled at Francis and Alex and three more men. Went up that hill. Laughing and talking. It was Halloween, everything looks scary at that time. What a scardey cat Francis must have been. Ha-ha.
The End
