Culture of Fear

This poem is inspired by the TedX speech of young poet Amal Kassir❤️

We live in a world that needs to be more accepting of the diversity within in. This is a message for everyone

#ProjectDontJudge

Did you stop and asked that muslim girl her name?
Or did you just assume; because they're all the same?
Did you find it in your heart to look past the pigment of her skin?
Or did you just generalize her cuz of the clothes she's in?

Did you stop to ask that muslim boy why he grows a beard?
Or did you just assume he pledged allegiance to a group he feared?
Did you ever stop to think that maybe he's praying to thank his God
And not to blow up things; is your judgment that flawed??

Why do people judge others by nothing more than looks?
When will we realize that the road to humanity can't be found in books?
Will there ever come a day where we are accepting of who we are??
Or are we living in a world where that dream is unreachably far?

We hear the news, and we always assume the worst.
As if listening to mainstream media quenches an undying thirst.
We stereotype people based on what others say
We don't give them a chance to defend themselves in any way

Well allow me to debunk some of those lies
Allow me to show a world through their eyes
Maybe then you'll feel a small amount of pity
Pity for the 'weirdos' who were forced to flee their city

Let me take you on a journey in their old tattered shoes
Where you'll feel their blood trickling down an open bruise
Let me take you to their broken country not covered in the news
Where people are dying regardless of your type of views

Let me show you a bloody world, with mosaics of pain
Where innocence is stolen with each drop of acid rain
Let me take you to a place that's barricaded with flames
Where families are broken while you're pointing blames

Let me take you on a journey you'll never forget
Maybe then your heart will feel some regret
Let me take you away, even if it's for an hour
Let me take you on this journey where your mouth will turn sour

Maybe then you'll see the reason they had to flee
The reason they left their country; because they have no place to be
Maybe their innocent faces will make you realize
That what you hear is 1/8th truth, the rest are all lies

We've got to put an end to the normalization of hate
We've got to raise awareness and set the record straight
Everyone, clean your lenses so your vision becomes clear
So the world we live in stops endorsing a culture of fear
