Chapter 1: away

"Aaaaaarrrgghhh!!!!"

Effortlessly I slit his throat open. Within seconds he is dead.

I watched him as he limply fell to the ground from the second floor balcony.

I've had enough of that man. I didn't even bother giving him a swift and quick death.

I tortured him as his retribution for his past deeds. Torturing before killing was not my usual method.

I usually smiled for them before cleanly cutting their heads, delivering a no pain death.

This just showed how much I hate him. He reminded me of someone from the past.

"Lady Morté, it's time to go. You took more time than usual for this job." Kira's voice snapped me back to reality.

I nod and signal my fox to climb and rest on my shoulder.

"I have booked a flight to the hunter's exam site. It's in a few more hours," she said.

I didn't trouble myself packing and only bringing my black, worn-out cloak and weapons.

"Milady, personal feelings on the job is a big hindrance," she suddenly stated. "Even if he resembled that man in both —personality and sins."

Yes, I know..... It is in the past, I should move on... But can I?

Halfway through, on the plane, Kira asked me why did I want to enter the hunter's exam.

"Because the privileges that comes with the license is useful," I answered simply.

"You mean the free lodging and transportation?" she asked.

"Yes and also even if I killed someone, they can't arrest me."

"Even without it, you can avoid the hunters perfectly, milady," Kira said, still not understanding.

"Yes, however, it is tiring to always hide and run. There is also another reason..."

Kira thinks deeply and stayed quiet for the rest of the flight.

When we arrived, I check-in into a hotel, since the hunter exam begins tomorrow.

"Kira, can you go and buy some new clothes and food for me. I want to take a shower," I requested Kira.

"Of course, milady." She then shifts into a grown woman in her twenties.

"I will be back as soon as possible. I will keep the mind-link open, so if you need any other things, don't hesitate to ask."

Over the past years I utilized my assassination techniques for a living. Killed many people —Nen users included.

I hand my wallet filled with money I received as payment for my jobs.

After she left I went to take a shower. I stripped of my clothes and went to the bathroom.

There is a variety of soap and shampoos. I pick the chocolate-scented shampoo and strawberry soap.

In the shower I mind-linked Kira. 'Kira buy me a mask as well.'

'Very well.'

Once I wrapped myself with a towel I opened the bathroom door.

I see Kira holding grocery and shopping bag in her hands.

"Milady, perfect timing. Here is the assemble I picked." She put the shopping bag and takes out the outfit.

I inspect the clothing laid in front of me.

It's a white sleeveless high-neck shirt with a black ribbon on the neck paired with a magenta broderie lace waistcoat. A wine thigh-length skirt with black gothic lace thights that reaches the ankle underneath.

"Isn't this too... fashionable..?" I ask. Doubting this will fit for an exam.

"What are you saying milady? This would do, it's presentable, stylish and also comfortable to move around in," she reasoned, insisting her point.

I slip on the outfit. Kira's right it was comfortable.

"Pair them with this white, silver-chained slouch boots." She brought out the shoe from the shopping bag.

Then something caught my eyes. A white fox shaped mask, painted on the side were an elegant black swirl pattern with streaks of silver.

I take it out the shopping bag and admire it.

"I knew you would like it milady. That mask will cover your face and only reveals your eye color," she stated.

She really know me well. After all, she is one of my few friends.

"But, milady, what I don't understand why you want to hide your face," she questioned.

Then after a moment she answers her own question.

"I understand... So people won't get affected and you want to have some fun as well in this, huh..." But before I could say something she continued, "but you will throw the cloak away now, right?"

"No."

".....Why?"

"So people won't know I'm a girl and underestimate me."

"That is their fault. Milady isn't someone that should be judged by the cover," she tried to reason with me.

The keyword here is tried to reason with me. I stubbornly keep the cloak.

"Fine... Now we should have dinner and rest for the hunter exam tomorrow," she gave up after a few attempts.

I don't argue with her on this because I know I'm tired.

We dine in a comfortable silence. Only occasionally making small conversation.

I finished the food. Kira took the plate to clean them before I had the chance to. And I let her.

It has gotten darker. I closed the light and get on the bed, preparing to sleep.

"Goodnight, Kira."

She shifts back into a fox and get inside the cover. I cuddled her like a stuffed toy.

"Goodnight, milady," saying that she snuggled closer to my chest.
