Chapter 11: battle

There was a graveness in his tone that I had never heard before. I took a step back and placed my hand on Thomas's slim shoulder. I could feel him tense up but he still turned around to face me.

"Yes, Harcourt?"

His eyes were sparkling with jealousy and confusion and my heart sunk. He knew that someone was going on between the two of us.

"What's happening?"

"It's time to go to war." His voice was somber and behind him, Jasper straightened.

"Gather the men and get them on their horses," he ordered, striding out of the room with his cloak billowing after him.

Thomas quickly followed him out and I ran up next to him to talk.

"It's not what it looks like."

"I know."

"But then why-"

"Because you have feelings for him." He stopped where he was and looked at me with an intensity I didn't imagine Thomas could convey. "And I before you say it, I know you have feelings for me too, but it's different. You two are soulmates and we just aren't. You can like me but never as much as you like him."

Words couldn't answer him right now and I had nothing to say. Everything he had said was true and I couldn't even deny it for him. He gave me a weak smile and began to follow Jasper again. I slowly trailed after the two men who were ruining my life.

We arrived at a large stable and I could see all of the men jumping up on their horses, dressed for battle. I boarded my own horse alongside Jasper and Thomas and Jasper went ahead the rest of us.

"Let's go!" He screamed at the group, who was completely unsure of what to do in this situation.

We all slowly got our horses to a gallop to match our king's an we were off. I sped up and maneuvered so that I was beside William. He glanced over at me and grinned.

"Glad to see your still alive."

I chuckled slightly. "You know I'm not afraid of him."

"You're fearless," he teased. "Why don't you just be like the rest of us and hate him silently."

Because I don't hate him.

I shrugged nonchalantly and kept my pace with his. "So what do you think the war will be like?"

"Bloody."

I groaned, "Obviously!"

He shot me an playful grin and I hoped to God that he would survive this upcoming bloodbath. He was entertaining enough to keep me from constantly obsessing over the two men who held my heart.

I looked to the front of the group to see Jasper leading us, his frame hunched over his horse and his red cape billowing in the wind. If he were to die, I imagined it would be heartbreak beyond belief. To loose a soulmate is to loose your soul, as one of the elders in my town always used to say. He was one of the lucky ones who found his match. Usually, no one was that lucky.

I drew my house slower until I matched pace with Thomas. He glanced over at me and smiled his warm smile that he always had. "Julian."

"Thomas."

"How are you?"

"Excuse me?"

He kept his eyes on the path. "I know you're hurting. And I know how to solve it."

I blanched. "And how would I do that?"

"Be with Jasper."

I gaped at him, my eyes wide. "You're kidding!"

He glanced around and I assumed it was to see if no one was around.

"He's your soulmate, the one person who you are destined to be with. I'm not in it so I don't know, but I assume you to are drawn to each other in ways you can never explain," he glanced over at me sadly. "I could never satisfy you."

I wanted to argue but I knew he was right. When Jasper and I had kissed, sparks had flew, it was every bit just as magical as that old man had described. But when Thomas and I had kissed, it was peaceful and loving but not fumed by passion. I knew in order to be happy, truly happy, I would have to be with Jasper.

I gave him a soft smile. "Thank you, Thomas. I'm so sorry."

He only returned the smile, no words leaving his lips.

"We're here!" Jasper shouted back at the group and I slowly turned my head to look at the busy battlefield a mile away.

Oh crap.
