(9) Dinner

'What on earth is in that bag?'

I stepped aside to let Mirage in. 'Well... stuff.' He huffed. 'We're only gone for a couple days.' I shook my head. 'You never know.' Mirage looked around. 'Since we fly at a horrible time tonight, I have asked Kamie for a date...' he trailed off. 'Ah, alright. That's good actually, I have dinner too with someone tonight. I was about to ask if you didn't mind if leave them base.' Mirage ohh'ed. 'As in a date?' I shrugged. 'No, just as friends.' Mirage sat down. 'Does he know that?' I turned towards him. 'You were the one who told me to make friends, remember?' He nodded rapidly. 'I know, it's just the guys here are not always kind... I don't want you to get hurt.' I hummed and sat beside him and wrapped my arm around his shoulder. 'You need to relax. You're way too stressed. Not good for you Energon pressure.' I smiled. 'As long as I am no stressed, you shouldn't be stressed either.'

He nodded. I laid my head on his shoulder. He stiffened. We sat like for a moment. The silence was nice. I felt the anger rising up again. Once again, Mirage proved how sweet he can be. I looked up and reached for his face. He deserves better.
I drowned in those perfect blue eyes. I had never seen a man with such beautiful ocean blue eyes. I never wanted to make it personal, but I really started to like working with him. I think we can learn from each other.
I cleared my throat and got up. 'I've to make myself ready.' He nodded and got up. 'Yeah, so do I.' He walked up to the door. 'Enjoy your night. I will see you at ten in the hanger.' Mirage nodded. 'Sí, enjoy your evening with that... guy.' He made a gesture with his hand before leaving.

I made myself ready and dressed up in skinny jeans and white halter crop top. At the main entrance of the base was Travis already waiting. I met him last night and he asked me if we could have dinner to get to know each other. Keeping Mirage's words in mind, I said yes and hoped it wouldn't end in a disaster. 'You look lovely.' He kissed the back of my hand. 'Thank you.' I wanted to have a few friends besides Mirage.

He took me to the new grill restaurant that opened last week. It surprised me he was even able to make a reservation. We sat down. The first thing I noticed were the ornate lamps that emitted cozy mood lighting. The brownish color of the lamps matched the rest of the interior perfectly. The restaurant was not too big. From our table I could overlook everything and see into the kitchen. My eyes fell on the door as it opened again.

Kamie and Mirage strolled in. This couldn't be true! They had their date right here? Why me? I could've known. This place was eagerly popular. Mirage noticed me. I quickly broke eye contact. 'You're alright?' Travis questioned as a frown spread over his face. 'Yeah, totally.' I mustered a smile on my face. I glanced at Mirage and caught his eyes. Cheeky man. He was more than curious to see who was sitting in front of me, but I don't think he knew Travis.

The waiter walked up to me. 'Good evening, can I take your drinks?' I nodded. 'Ice tea.' He looked at Travis. 'Cola.' The man walked away. The restaurant was small enough for me to hear Kamie talk to Mirage and it distracted me. It shouldn't be that way. 'So, how's your investigation going?' I shrugged. 'We are stuck, unfortunately but we might have a lead in Utah. We fly tonight,' I said. I played with the cutlery on the table. 'Right, well... from what I heard among the soldiers, you're a brilliant spy.' I snorted. 'You heard that?' He nodded.

'Well, I think the credits should go to Mirage.'

'Why? You figured out more than he did in 10 months.' I frowned. '10 months?' I repeated. 'The murder investigation from the olive is recently, but this is going on for at least 10 months,' he replied. 'Right.' I faked a smile. Mirage never told me he was working on this for ten months already. 'You look lovely by the way.'
'Thanks...' Mirage shifted in his chair and tapped nervously on the table. He was keeping an eye on me. 'What happened to Mirage's former partners?' I questioned. 'Well, some of them died.'

'Died?' I repeated. Travis nodded while Mirage looked down at the table and cleared his throat. 'What happened?' Travis shook his head. 'It happened during a mission. I would watch your back.' I nodded slowly. 'Dino never told me this. I guess there's a lot he hasn't told me...' I said, loud enough for Mirage to hear.

That evening, I caught up with the spy. 'Katie—' I raised my hand and opened his trunk. 'Save me your lies.' I passed and hopped in his alt-mode. 'I didn't lie. I'm sorry, I should've told you.' I snorted and shook my head,— buckling up. 'I thought we had a deal! I gave you a second change you're still keeping things behind,' I snapped. 'You're right. I'm sorry, I just didn't want to scare you. Yes, two of them died, but it was their own fault. They didn't listen—' I cut him off. 'I'm not afraid of death, Mirage. I've been closed to death than you will ever realize, but you could've at least been open about it when I asked you about your former partners instead of telling me they couldn't stand you.'

Dino nodded slowly. 'Not to mention you've been working on this for ten months. You never told me that either.' He slumped back in his seat. 'No, because it's embarrassing.' I snorted. 'Your ego will get you killed. I've been open to you about everything.'
'No, you're not. Not about everything.'
'Everything that's relevant for this case.'
My sharp comment made him uneasy. 'I don't have to share my life story with you. You're not family nor my boyfriend. You're dating my slut of a sister,' I scolded. 'She's not!' He spat. 'No?' I snapped back. A silence fell. 'I believe she was dating two boyfriends back in high school... might have been three. Also, did you know she had to do a STI test? I know because I spied on her for years. I know everything about her, I even have proof if you don't believe me.'

He clenched his jaws. 'Three guys?' He asked. I didn't reply. 'She wasn't loyal.' Mirage started his engine. 'She is now,' he muttered under his breath but I wasn't sure if he was trying to convince himself or me. He drove towards the airport where a C17 was waiting. I hopped out and didn't wait for him. I've been trying to make clear how untrustworthy my sister is, but he didn't get it or he just didn't want to believe it.

I strapped in and grabbed my phone. Dino drove up the ramp and hopped out. A few soldiers secured his tires. Dino sat beside me and strapped in. 'I'm sorry.' I gazed at him. 'I'm trying to do things right, okay? I'm really trying to deal with you both. I haven't slept for three days and Mearing is expecting answers I don't have. I'm tired.' I started to feel bad but shot him a glare anyway while reaching for my bag and pulled out a pillow and blanket. 'I swear, I'm gonna kick your ass one day,' I scolded. He took it from me.

Dino moved and made himself comfortable. I allowed him to use my shoulder and started at the walls that formed the plane. His breathing changed and he was out before we were in the air. I rested my head against his. It felt weird to be this close with my sisters boyfriend. Perhaps I shouldn't allow this to happen. The risk of developing feelings for him was too big. Yet, maybe it already started to happen. Maybe deep down I already had the desire to be with him. Last thing I want is to be the jealous bitch, trying to steal my sister boyfriend. It's wrong.
