(2) A military base

Dino came to a stop at a gas station around the evening. He said he needed to refuel because he's running out of Energon. I hopped out as well and bought some food before I sat down on his hood and watched him. "You still haven't told me why you needed my help," I said, taking a bite. "Talking here at a gas station is not a good place," Mirage said and glanced at me while leaning against his car. "So, my sister and you... how long are you two dating?" I asked. "Uh, two years," he replied. "You're her younger sister... it surprised me she never spoke about you," he said quietly. "It's a long, complicated story and I don't like talking about it to be honest."

Mirage finished and paid. "You want some?" I asked, offering him some food. "Are you sure?" he asked. "Otherwise I wouldn't offer it," I replied. He took the second part of the sandwich and took a bite. "Thanks," he mumbled. We sat like this for a while in silence. "I really appreciate that you are willing to help me, Katie." I glanced at him and shrugged. "It's fine."

Mirage swallowed his last bite and started his engine, driving off back to the highway. We chatted a little to get to know each other better, after all, we need to work together and as time passed, I started to notice that he started to be more relaxed and open. At first, he was more listening and now he couldn't stop talking. I know why my sister likes him. He's cute and handsome. Mirage didn't talk about my sister whatsoever, he kept changing the subject which surprised me. He didn't want to talk about his relationship with her or how they met. Maybe not my business, but I was sincerely curious and interested in how the met.

Around the evening we arrived at the base. Mirage parked in the hanger and cut his engine. I hopped out and swung my backpack over my shoulders. A tall muscular man approached along with someone in an army uniform. "Hi, nice to meet you... I am Katie Banes," I said, shaking both their hands. They seemed a little quiet. Like, I had done something wrong. "Nice to meet you too, I am Optimus Prime, commander of the Autobots."

"Ah, Mirage told me about you." I said and flashed him a warm smile. I turned towards the major. "William Lennox," he introduced. "Did Mirage tell you about why he asked you?" Optimus asked. I shook my head, no not yet," I said, glancing at the spy beside me. "We will talk tomorrow, I am sure she can use some rest first," Mirage stated. I appreciated his concern. "Mirage will show you around and take you to your room," Optimus said. Mirage nodded and gestured me to follow him. "Have a good night." Both men nodded and continued their walk.

The halls were long, endless and for me it was more like a maze. It will take a few days until I am used to it and know where to go. "It's already late, so I will be at your room tomorrow at 9 AM. Then I will show you where everything is and talk to you about why you are here," Dino stated. I nodded and looked over his shoulder as he typed the code of, what I assumed, will be my room. We walked in and I placed my back on the bed. For a military room, it looked quite nice, decorated with a warm beige color, a double bed, desk, drawer and closet. Very basic, but I don't need more.

"Okay, I will leave you to settle and talk to you tomorrow," Mirage stated. I gave a small nod, "thank you, Mirage," he turned and nodded. "Yeah, no problem. I should thank you actually." I shrugged my shoulders and watched him leave. Something strange is going on here. I can feel the tension hanging in the air. I locked the door and took a shower before I went to bed.

The next morning, Dino was there to take me. He didn't say anything to me and gestured me to follow him. I had to jog to keep up with him. "Mirage, why are we going so fast?" I asked. He didn't reply and pushed open a door, leading to a staircase. "Mirage!" I grabbed his arm and forced him to look at me. "What's going on?" I asked. "Kamie doesn't know you're here. She's at the base right now."

"You haven't told her?" I asked to confirm. "Not even a day and you're already breaking a promise." He sighed, "come on." He walked all the way up to the fourth floor towards his office. "Please, have a seat we have a lot to discuss," he said. I sat down and crossed my legs. "Why haven't you told her? You came to me telling me my sister would love to see me. I knew she didn't but you lied? On our first day of being partners."

"I tried to talk Kamia about you but absolutely didn't want to talk about you. In fact, she didn't even want to hear your name. Listen, it's not about her right now. I promise I will solve that problem, but right now we have to talk about something else... something more important."

He reached for his desk and grabbed a case file, opening it and showed me a photo. "Do you know him?" He asked. "Oh my gosh... so this is why you asked me? Because you know the truth?" I asked. "Katie please. I am asking you because you popped up in the database and this guy too. I don't know anything about you or what happened to you. These are crypt files. Listen, do you know this guy or not?"

"Yes... I know him. He's was a friend of mine. We trained together and he betrayed us. He betrayed me."

"He's dead."
"Dead?" I asked confused. "Yes, usually we don't really care about murder investigations but... he was killed by a Decepticon and we want to know why. Do you have any idea why he's dead?" Mirage questioned. I stared at the wooden desk for several moments before I got up. "I can't help you. It was a mistake coming here... I have to go."

"Katie wait!"
Mirage blocked the entryway. "You promised. We made a deal," he said. "I can't help you, Mirage. I am not the right person to help you. I,—" I sighed and looked away,— cutting myself off. "Katie. If you know anything about this you have to tell me. More people could die and that's exactly what we want to prevent, right?" he said quietly. "Mirage... I am not the right person to help you."

I passed him and opened the door. "Katie please! You just got here. Just... think about what I told you. It's not even everything I'd wanted to tell you. There was left a note... it seems to be written in... some sort of code language. I can't figure out what it means nor anyone else..." he grabbed the case file again and showed me a photo of the brow that was left. "Have you seen this before? Do you know what it means?"

I clenched my jaws together. "I am sorry. I have to go." I turned around and walked out of the door, heading back towards my room. Just before I managed to reach my dorm, I bumped straight into my sister I haven't seen for years.
