Shot

I hobbled my way upstairs, assisted by Jacob. He quickly opened the door to his room, before I could even pull out the card for mine. He lead me into his bathroom where we did indeed find the water to be now working.

"Stay right there." He said as I sat at the edge of the bathtub.

"Right, like where the hell would I go?" I muttered.

I unwrapped my bloody sock, gagging. I stripped off my shoes and other sock, while I was at it. It was weird to wear only one. I quickly tossed my sock in the trash. It was useless now.

Water spilled from the spout as I cleaned my wound, carefully scrubbing away dirt and blood. No zombie contamination had gotten close. Good, I'd rather die than become one of those creatures.

Jacob returned, carrying a first aid kit. "How ya holding up?"

"I've been better." I winced. It stung like a bitch.

He bent down and got out some gauze as I dried my leg. He began unwrapping it but I interrupted him.

"You don't have to help me anymore. Go to bed. I've got this."

He shook his head. "Hey, I helped cause this mess. Let me help clean it up. The least I can do is make sure your wound is properly dressed."

I had to admit, albeit begrudgingly, it was moments like this where Jacob impressed me. This moment and when he had decided to bring Callie along, both showed he had some sense to him. He was more responsible than he acted. He seemed like a true leader.

"Well thanks to you, I didn't get bit. So I guess I should say... I appreciated it." I sighed.

Jacob raised an eyebrow. "I thought you were gonna give me a harder time. Considering I shot you. And you don't really seem to like me."

"Well I've probably done more damage to myself if I'm being honest. It was either your bullet or joining the undead. I'll take a bullet any day."

He pulled out hydrogen peroxide wipes from the first aid kit. I winced as the chemicals touched my skin.

"You shouldn't say stuff like that." Jacob grumbled. I prayed he would make a joke to lighten the mood- I was doing such a poor job of it- but he was more stone faced than ever.

"I'm serious! If I ever actually get bitten you better shoot me." I rolled my eyes.

Jacob frowned. "Locke, I'm not shooting you."

"Not again?" I weakly smiled.

He didn't return it. "Did I ever say I'm sorry about that?"

"I don't think you need to. I told you I respected that you did it. But seriously, Jacob, if I'm ever bitten and we're still stuck together, can you promise that you'll take me out?" I mimicked raising a gun and pulling a trigger.

Jacob let out a hollow chuckle. "I'm not letting that happen to one of my crew."

"I don't suppose we'll be together long enough anyway. Tonight will not repeat itself. But just in case..." I looked at him, pleading.

I didn't want to cause any more deaths if I could help it.

He hesitated and sighed, wrapping the gauze around my leg. "If it'll put your mind at ease, I promise."

"Thank you. For everything, seriously." I have him a genuine smile.

"Don't mention it." He stood up, stretching out his hand to help me up. I took it.

A stinging pain shot through my leg, specifically around the area the bullet had grazed. I groaned.

"Need help getting across the hall?"

I nodded, glumly. I hated relying on someone else so much. To think, I might be dead if it weren't for others.

They were going to slow me down. I needed to get to Jake.

Jacob helped me gobble across the hallway, where we found Nicole and Callie playing a card game, a pack of Oreos next to them.

"Is that Blackjack? Nicole, you can't teach an eight year old to play Blackjack!" Jacob scolded.

Nicole frowned. "Why not? She's really good!"

I noticed that Callie's pile of Oreos were certainly larger than Nicole the dealer's pile. Callie beamed at Nicole's compliment.

Jacob shrugged, satisfied with that answer.

"We came here to sleep. Not have a slumber party." I said.

"We just wanted to make sure you two were alive before we went to bed. You guys could have had your own slumber party for all we knew." Nicole scoffed.

I let go of Jacob, hobbling towards the bathroom. "I'm taking a shower."

"And I'm confiscating these." Jacob snatched the half empty pack of Oreos. He shoved two in his mouth, stating, "Sugwar before bef is baf or ou."

It sounded like a garbled mess with the cookies hindering him.

I shut the door behind me.

Things were getting a bit too cozy between my questing crew and I.

I needed to think of a way out. Quick. Before I got too attached.

I turned on the water. It seemed I had a lot to think about.
