Nightmares
It wasn't that late when I had fallen asleep, but when I awoke it was dark outside. A soft knock at the door, waking me.
I opened it to find two out of three of my traveling companions standing in the hall.
Callie was nearly shaking, her eyes red and wet, tear tracks plain on her face. She ran to me the second I opened the door.
Jacob stood behind her, looking like a complete mess to be honest. His hair was in disarray, having not yet treated to the fourteen products he used daily, and purple rings rested under his eyes. Despite his disheveled appearances still granted me a very Jacob grin: genuine and lopsided.
A clap of thunder caught my attention before Jacob could open his mouth. Callie and I both jumped.
"She's afraid of the storm. I tried to calm her down but she seemed to want you." He explained.
My heart seemed to melt a little bit at that. Callie had wanted me. I scooped her into my arms, before sitting her on my bed.
Jacob followed, after my silent invitation.
"It's okay." I pulled her close, gently stroking her back.
"There- there was a storm. An- and Becca died and I..." Callie cried into my shoulder.
Becca... That must have been her sister.
"Shhh, it's okay. The storm won't hurt you." For once Jacob seemed at loss for words. I couldn't blame him.
The thunder clapped again. I didn't jump this time, but it certainly caught me off guard. I had never liked thunder.
My dad used to set up the den, make it into a giant pillow fort, when there was a bad storm. It calmed Jake and I down and made storms an enjoyable experience. Now, they just made him miss me more than ever.
"Callie, what happened tonight? Did the thunder wake you up?" I asked.
She shook her head.
"Did you have a bad dream?"
This time she nodded.
"Do you want to talk about it?" Jacob asked.
Callie shook her head again, but this time she hesitated afterwards. She opened her mouth.
"I was alone. And Becca was dead. And there were so many of them. I was lost and- and-" She started crying again.
Honestly, I didn't know how to comfort her. She'd been through something so traumatic.
From what I had pieced together Becca, Callie's older sister had committed suicide, possibly right in front on the eight year old. Becca had been bitten. At some point Callie had been too, but for whatever reason she hadn't turned. For some reason this eight year old was immune. Because of that, she'd be hunted if anyone found out about her gift.
Poor kid couldn't catch a break.
How do you handle that?
"You're so strong, Callie. The nightmares can't get you." I hugged her tighter.
It was hard to say if my words did any actual good. The room was quite for a few minutes as the two of us silently comforted her. Her crying slowed.
"You know... Thor's the god of thunder. He's a pretty cool guy." Jacob spoke up, after the silence had rested for long enough.
Jacob launches into telling stories from Norse mythology he'd learned... Well I didn't know when. Callie was instantly enthralled.
I tried to offer my input when possible but I had mostly known Thor through Marvel Comics. Callie enjoyed my interpretation too.
This seemed to calm her down as the storm and memory of her nightmares faded away.
The three of us fell asleep on my bed, rain tapping against the window, but it felt too far away to draw our attention. Callie and I slept soundly, unlike how it'd been before.
No more nightmares. Not now.
Hope you enjoyed. I thought this would be a cute little chapter and add in some good bonding. I hope you enjoyed! Let me know and don't forget to leave a vote.
