Enemies
Callie wove a dandelion crown for Jacob and he wore it proudly. I laughed, feeling so comfortable in the day with the sunlight hot on my face.
Then Nicole reached for her gun. I saw it out of the corner of my eye.
"Nic, what are you..." I trailed off as I noticed the approaching horde.
Ideas began circulating in my mind. There was no way we could all get to Ducky and drive off before they reached us. There weren't too many but there were a lot more than I would have expected to find in a little town like this. Must have been at least fifteen, with a couple of stranglers.
"Nic, take Callie and get in the car. Lock it. We'll distract them." I didn't have to emphasize the urgency.
Nicole didn't argue. I could tell she wanted to, but given the situation there was no time.
Jacob grabbed his shotgun.
"You got enough bullets to keep reloading that thing?" I asked, judging his weapon of choice, again.
"You know I do."
"Good." I lifted my gun. It would be hard to take them out from here.
I glanced towards the slide. I had a risky idea, but it would be good to trap them all in one place.
The slide had stairs next to it and a large box at the top where you could wait to slide.
"Okay I have an idea. You with me?" I asked.
"Locke, that's insane." He knew what I was thinking before I could even explain it.
"Yeah and I'm doing it. You gonna help or not?"
"Fine. But I think I should go first and you get the back."
That would make more sense with our weapons. My gun could hold more and shoot faster. It would make more sense that he be the distraction.
I didn't care. "Nah. You shouldn't have to be bait. It's risky."
The horde was closer now. I shoved him aside, hoping none of them would choose to divide the group by going after him. I raced up the stairs, taking out a two on the way up by looking over my shoulder.
The horde growled at me, fast than I expected them to be up stairs. I reached the top. Most of the horde followed after.
Jacob started picking them off the bottom as I distracted them.
One zombie got too close, flashing his black bloodied mouth at me, I stepped back.
There was nowhere to go but down. I fell down the slide backwards. Another zombie was crawling up the bottom. I flipped around. I kicked him in the face with heel of my boot. He flew backwards.
I scurried off the slide as bodies began to trail me. Jacob had gotten the remaining zombies.
I hadn't heard the extra gun shot.
Jacob clutched his shoulder at the top of the stairs, blood gushing between his fingers, a newly formed hole in his jacket.
A woman stood at the bottom of the stairs, her gun still aimed at him.
Hope you liked this chapter! Sorry it's late! I guess I've started doing every other Friday as my schedule. Next Friday the next chapter will be out, I think. Going back to normal now that there's nothing to do.
I hope you liked it! The picture is from Anaconda's Copper Chute, the only redeemable part of the town in my opinion. I heard they tore it down in 2017 but in 2019 Dead Serious it's still up!
I hope you liked it! Leave your thoughts in the comments! Thanks!
