1. Changing Tradition
Juliet's POV
I look around the halls of Welton as my father and I await Headmaster Nolan's talk before the assembly. I wasn't sure why we had to do it this early, but it was probably because tomorrow is the first day of school.
I still can't believe I'm going to be the first female student in an all-boys school. It will be challenging, but I never back down from a challenge.
Soon the office door opened to see Headmaster Nolan coming out to greet Father and me.
" Ah, Mr. Keating it's a pleasure to see you again. Ms. Keating lovely to meet you." Mr. Nolan said as he shook both our hands.
" It's good to see you again, sir." My father said.
" Nice to meet you, Headmaster." I said.
" Please come in." Mr. Nolan said as he brought my father and me into his office, which sure is way bigger than my father's office, and sat down for a moment so we could talk.
" First I welcome you to the school. I'm sure our students will exceed excellent with your class Mr. Keating. I'm sure your time in London will give our students the motivation they need to thrive here at Welton."
" Oh of course. I look forward to teaching these boys, and my daughter about Literature." My father said as he sat next to me on the couch and Headmaster Nolan sat at his desk.
" Yes, I'm quite sure, and Ms. Keating. I'm sure your father told you here at Welton the extracurricular activities have been assigned for you on what would be best as a student, correct?"
" Yes, I have Headmaster. I do look forward to the Math and Music Club, but I do have a question about the Ladies of Welton High Society Tea. What is this club if I may ask."
" Well since you are the first female student in this school, we don't have a club for you to be involved in the school, but my wife suggested this club and be part of the community. The club takes place every Monday and Friday right after school. My wife has even volunteered to pick you up at the front door of the school at 3:00 pm sharp."
"Oh, wow I guess it wouldn't hurt to try. Most of the time would focus on my studies, and try out new hobbies to see what I really like. I have just never done something like this before, but I never turned down a challenge before."
" Well, I'm sure you'll do just fine here since we like to keep things traditional here at Welton."
" I'm sure you do sir but I think traditions will change and there is nothing wrong with that."
" How do you mean Ms. Keating?"
" Traditions can be grown in different ways. It's like the tree of knowledge. It always keeps growing, and with the school you teach you're focusing on the branches above you, neat, clean, and trimmed but a tree grows two ways. The branches and the roots. That's where the tree begins. The school started a hundred years ago and has flourished beautifully, but the roots won't stop growing since you can't cut under the ground unless you want to pull the tree out which you don't want to happen, but there will be a day where ladies like myself will either attend school or work here. Times have changed sir, during the war ladies and mothers had to find work to put bread on the table since fathers and husbands went off to the war. Right now you can't control time because things are changing whether you like it or not, but we must thrive in it. There are ladies right now who are attending college because they want to become something more and why? Because the world is growing faster than you think. Headmaster, I want to help this school grow even more as being the first female student at Welton, if this school doesn't go well then I will admit defeat but if things go well I would like for the progress to move forward." I said with confidence and the truth of what is going on in the world and hopefully, Headmaster Nolan could see that.
Headmaster Nolan looked at me with concern about how I was outspoken, and hopefully, I wasn't getting into trouble already.
" Mr. Keating...I was concerned about allowing your daughter into our school and would allow her since you are going to teach here, but I do have to say...you have raised a bright child and I will agree to the conditions."
" Thank you, Headmaster." My father said as he smiled at the progress of moving forward.
" Well, we should get going to the morning assembly, don't want to be late."
Headmaster Nolan, my father, and I got up from our seats and left the room to get ready for the school's assembly.
Once my father and I were alone and on our way to our rooms we could finally talk.
" I do have to say my dear that sure was quite an example of you of to expand the school. But you must be careful. There are people here doesn't want to change a thing."
" Yes, father. I guess everything I have learned from you made me question things and how we can answer them."
" I'm sure you will, but take it one step at a time, always look before you leap. And once things progress I'm sure you'll go to the distance of what you want to do."
I smiled happily as I was glad my father believes in what can be accomplished.
" Thank you Daddy. Well, I'm going to change real quick, and I'll be out in a few minutes." I said as I unlocked my door and headed inside my dorm to change into my school uniform.
