Never Do As They're Told

The coin tumbled slowly in the air

the shot sent it darting down the dusty street,

the crowd all gasping as one

'Right through the middle!" shouted the small boy

waving the coin in the air

'Was jest lucky" the grizzled cowboy sneered

'Toss two' the shooter said, calmly

Up went the coins, two shots

and another loud gasp from the crowd

'Done it agin', both through the middle!''

'It's rigged' the grizzled cowboy snarled,

'And nobody likes a chislen' little sidewinder'

He moved into the street and opened his coat.

'Draw when you're rea-'

Three shots, sounding like one,

sent the cowboy spinning down to the ground

The woman pushed through the crowd,

her face set in an angry frown

'Lizabeth! You get your mischievous bottom

home this minute and you better not

let your pa see you with his gun. And shootin'

strangers in the street like that, Lordy'

She dragged the litle girl away by the ear,

deaf to the complaints.

"Aw, ma, I got all my school larnin' done'
