Chapter One: Part Two [2]

Walking down the abandoned and wide road bridge, Nigel was feeling uneasy. He felt like someone was staring at him and that someone would attack him at any second. He kept looking everywhere and over his shoulder, just to be sure that no zombie was around. He was careful; every step he took was calculated, ensuring he was not making too much sound. He took a deep breath and slowly exhaled the air to calm himself.

Aaron, who was leading, slowed down and walked by his side. "You see that red car?" He pointed at the car at the end of the line of abandoned and trapped cars.

Nigel nodded. "Is that your car?"

"Nope... but that's our ride."

"What if there's no key?"

"Leave that problem to me---"

They were swept with horripilation when they heard an inhuman sound from somewhere they knew was close to them. Instinctively, their feet just moved and they both sprinted in between and around the cars. It seemed like all of Nigel's wounds were gone; his body was numb. He looked over his shoulder and for a split second, he caught a glimpse of a naked man, covered in blood, rushing towards them.

"Fuck!"

Another inhuman roar terrorized them. He looked back again and the next thing he knew, three zombies were chasing and gaining on them. He kept running and he never looked back anymore. His adrenaline powered him up and that pushed him to keep moving. His body was as light as a feather; with huge strides, it seemed like he was running in the air. And his backpack wasn't that heavy anymore. Until a strong force that came from behind surprised him. He lost control as he was thrown into the roadside. He hit his head on a hard surface and the pain blurred his vision for a second.

"Nigel!"

He removed his backpack and set it aside as he attempted to stand up. But he groaned in pain and screamed when an old zombie man grabbed his leg and pulled him. As he was dragged, he felt the skin of his back being rubbed on the rough ground. The zombie crawled on top of him and choked his neck. He was trying to gasp for air and tried to pull the zombie's fingers off of his neck. Unfortunately, he also caught a glimpse of other zombies approaching, alarming him. He struggled in fear and desperation; he pushed and pushed, trying to peel off the zombie. But he couldn't get it off of him. It was heavier and stronger than he anticipated or perhaps, he was losing his strength.

As the darkness slowly enveloped his eyes, he was about to give up, but unexpectedly, the three cars near him exploded. The fire was raging and it engulfed the zombie on top of him and the others who were about to reach him. The zombie above him was swept away. They all screeched in pain as their clothes and hair were caught on fire. And they all ran away, fearing the fire that burned them. But the other zombies were not threatened. As he stood, he was terrified to see several zombies coming for him.

His eyes searched for Aaron until he spotted him lying on the ground, near the front wheel of a van, struggling against the zombie on top of him that was bashing his head on the ground. He rushed to him and pushed the woman zombie with full force. He picked up a knife near Aaron and stabbed the zombie in the stomach who was about to attack him. It screeched in pain as he repeatedly stabbed its stomach and chest. Its blood splattered on his face, shirt, and arms. And the zombie stopped fighting. He then kicked it away, wiped the blood off of his face using his shirt, and turned his attention back to Aaron.

"No! No... no!"

But he was already too late. His grip on the knife tightened as he stared at Aaron who was already unconscious. The back of his head was bleeding and the blood pooled around him and continued to spread. He was barely breathing. He wanted to save him but he didn't know how. He just froze. He heard another guttural inhuman noise and that woke him up. He saw the zombies coming in closer. He had two options that he didn't have much time to decide: to stay and try to help Aaron and surely die or run for his life but leave Aaron to die.

"I'm sorry..." His voice cracked as he began to step away. "

He ran away from the zombies. Uncertain of where he was heading, all he had in his mind was to get away. He kept looking over his shoulder and saw three more zombies gaining on him. He was never scared like this in his whole life. All he had was a knife. He kept running, but his legs were getting tired and the side of his stomach was aching.

Unexpectedly, one by one, the cars behind him exploded, slowing down the zombies from following him. Right there he believed someone was looking over him from afar and helping him get out of this. And that idea gave him hope. But the noise gathered so much attention that the next thing he noticed was more and more zombies came running towards his location from both sides of the road bridge.

He stopped running and looked for a way. He searched the road bridge. He thought of hiding in a car but he could be trapped inside for days or they could manage to break the windows. He thought of fighting them, but he didn't have enough strength and his chance of winning against the horde of zombies was too small. As the zombies came in closer to him, his legs moved. He rushed to the side of the bridge, climbed on the guardrails, and without any second thoughts, he jumped off the bridge.

Even if he is not a good swimmer, he risked his life. He dove into the river, feet first. In the blink of an eye, he was embraced by the water and sank to the depths while being carried by the strong current. Fear crept into his mind. With his remaining strength, he kicked and frantically flapped his arms to swim back up to the surface. He managed to get out and gasped for air. But the current was too strong that he struggled to stay afloat. He was repeatedly dragged underwater the moment he had a chance to breathe.
