Chapter Five

When I heard footsteps coming up the stairs, I immediately shoved the picture right where it was. Adam made his way to the bed, flopping himself onto it, with a loud groan. I got up knocking out the chair behind me. Adam groaned again while I bent down to place the chair where it was.

I stared at the room, eyeing every part of it. Until my eyes fell on a Shakespeare book on a white narrow table next to Adam's bedside. I lifted it while sitting next to the snoring man.

"I see... You are still a book nerd." I whispered under my breath, "Romeo and Juliet, how basic." I placed it calmly where it was before I got up.

This was useless.

I go downstairs, grabbing my coat from the floor on my way out.

The bodyguard boldly nodded at me while I unlocked my car. I raced out from the penthouse with my McLaren GT black car.

I smiled at the thought of Adam, who was drunk as fuck. I furrowed my eyebrows as I remembered him calling me Sophia in that state, shaking my head. I'm sure he was hallucinating.

My phone all of sudden rang filling in the silence, I pushed the "Phone" button on the screen in front of me.

"Hello?" a man's voice said nervously.

"Yes?"

"Hello Sophia, it's Luke. I'm sorry to disturb you at this time, but I need to tell you something very important... Not over the phone. What about tomorrow over a coffee at Teas & Coffees?" He asked as I was at a loss what to respond.

"I will only say yes because I have nothing to lose, 'officer'," I emphasized the word officer and that made him laugh with tenseness.

"Me either, great then! 9 o'clock." He said and he hangs up.

I sighed, What is it this time?

I sat on a couch chair outside, the weather was beautiful today. I looked at my phone with the cup in my hand.

9 o'clock, already.

I was about to get frustrated before Luke appeared from behind the trees that were planted nicely on the street, next to the cafe door.

The look on his face made me anxious. He looks like he hadn't slept in days. His eyes were downwards, wearing his cop uniform.

He gazed around, his gloomy eyes connected with mine. He nodded with a faint smile pacing his way towards me.

All of a sudden and out of nowhere I heard a gunshot, everything happened in a blur. People left their chairs screaming. Luke's body staggers and falls on the floor. I got up immediately and crouched next to his limp body.

His head was swimming in blood. Red blood was dripping out of his mouth, his eyes were wide open with blankness.

I heard someone running between the bushes. I got up immediately as I screamed at the people running in front of me, "Call 911."

I withdrew my gun from my waist and ran after the man that supposedly killed the bad cop.

He was fast as a flash, with his gun held tightly next to his thigh. He wore all-black clothing, every once in a while he looks back to see if I was following up with him. I tried so hard to catch up with him, pushing people on my way. If there weren't so many people, I would have shot him even if he was running.

Dammit.

I stopped halfway as the silhouette disappeared from the street in between people.

This is not good.

I parked my car in front of Blake's enterprise. My head made me wince in pain. I viewed myself in the rearview mirror.

I look like a madwoman.

I sighed reaching through my bag and retouched my face with makeup. My hands were trembling as I put on mascara. Making it slide down my cheeks.

Fuck.

I wipe my face off with a napkin before reaching for my pills shaking.

Calm the Fuck down, Sophia!

My mood was now, way down then it's ever been. It was my first day as Blake's assistant. I swallowed a pill grabbing the bottle of water that sat next to the gear lever.

What a good day!

I thought, bumping my head down on the car horn, making the car beep loudly. I jumped up.

"Geez!"

The face of Luke popped suddenly in my head, his pale face and his dark eyes looking at mine. I felt my heart tugging in my chest.

What did he want to tell me?

That question surely was going to haunt me for the rest of the day. I drank the water before getting out and bending down to grab my bag.

As I locked the car, my gaze drew upwards, catching a confused Adam looking down at me from his office's window.

I acted like I didn't notice him and made my way up to my bureau.

I sat my bag and my coat down on my chair.

"Zoe!" Violet startled me as I was arranging some papers on the desk.

"What the hell?" I looked at her with wide eyes.

"Oh uh! Someone is in a bad mood, on their first day in this lovely office." She said nodding and looking around.

"My head is hurting," I said, sighing as I plopped myself in my chair.

"That means your date didn't go well?" She demanded, sitting in front of me behind the desk.

"What date Violet?" I asked disconcerted.

" Your coffee date this morning. Luke called me, to give him your phone number yesterday."

"Oh, Well, yes, the date went well!" I lied, looking down on some stacked papers.

"Is that why you were late Miss Johnson?" I gazed up at the tall figure who showed up at the door.

He has some guts after what he did yesterday!

He was glaring at me, his blue eyes turned into dark grey.

"Ms Kent, go continue your work." He said as he was still fixedly gazing at me.

Violet nodded hurrying out of the room. I sighed, not wanting to deal with him.

He looked at me now all puzzled, as if he was trying to figure out what to say. He placed a newspaper in front of me showing the scene that he made yesterday.

"Don't blame me." I looked at him coldly while turning my computer on.

"It's a joke!" He said, straightening his shoulders.

"What's the joke?" I arched my eyebrow at him.

"The SIM! I don't have a SIM." He said as if he was reassuring himself.

"That was a scandal," I remarked, staring blankly at the computer.

"So you believe it?" He asked.

"What will you do? Kill me?" I urged, this time looking directly at him.

He was contemplating me wordlessly. I suddenly remembered the green file that was in my bag. I collected it and stared at it for a while, before handing it to him.

"You left it."

He backed away a little examining the folder in my hands.

"Yes, keep it in your drawer. It's nothing important." He stated, leaving the room.
