Chapter Eight

The loud blaring of the small alarm clock jarred me out of my peaceful sleep, making me smash the snooze button as hard as I possibly could.

My hand stretched over my head, trying hard to open my eyes. I moaned softly at the idea of leaving the bed.

Should I call in sick?

I asked myself before groaning and crumbling out of bed. My hips hitting the cold floor.

Never thought I would be so overwhelmed by leaving the bed today.

I grabbed the white blanket from above my head, laying my head on the bedside, closing my eyes.

My hair was sticking on my face. I held the blanket tightly around me with one hand, while removing the strands of hair from my cheeks with the other.

My phone rang making me bounce up. I stretched up for it from the side table under the bulb lamp. I took it out of the charger, before accepting the call.

I looked up at the clock, that I hanged up a while ago above my tall mirror.

Fuck, I overslept. It's 10 o'clock!

"Miss Johnson! You're late." The voice on the other line spoke, made me shiver at its heaviness.

"Sorry, Sir I'm just- just overly tired!" My voice came raspier than I thought, making Adam laugh slightly before taking a deep breath. I rubbed my eyes and sat up on the bed.

"Okay! Let's make a deal. You rest well, before meeting me at my club at 9 p.m." He said cooly.

My eyes still felt heavy, I could hear his slow breathing, waiting for me to respond.

"I-"

"It's not a question Miss Johnson it's an order." He hissed before hanging up.

I sighed, annoyed by his changing state. I got up on my feet, as my hand reached out for my robe laying on a chair.

I circled it around me, making my way to the kitchen to prepare my morning coffee.

Once the Black coffee was in my mug, I picked it up, leaning on the marble counter behind me.

I admired how the place was well organized, how the marble floor reflected perfectly under the lights of the sun, rushing through my windows.

It was pretty big, it made me feel alone.

Silence filled it as I was still observing the interior of my house.

Suddenly, I felt the need to get a pet. I always do, but I am scared of what's coming up next in my life. What if it felt abandoned because of my overly busy life.

Visiting an adoption centre won't hurt you, Sophia!

I shrugged before running back to my room. Dressing in blood-red sweat pants with crop top hoodie. I rushed to the bathroom, washing my face and brushing my teeth looking up at the mirror, before combing my hair putting it up in a messy bun.

I picked a handbag shoving my knife in. Before leaving, I took a chocolate bar, from the fridge. My sneakers were squeaking on the floor as I made my way to the door and down the stairs. I reached the car and drove off to the closest centre. A cat centre. I opened the door to the sounds of cats reaching my ears. I walked a bit inside, a woman popped up in front of me with a giant grey cat nuzzling in her arms.

"Welcome. How can I help you?" She asked with a big smile plastered on her face.

"Um, I want to walk around." I said she nodded when she turned her back, I was urged to ask, "How can I donate?" She twirled around handing me the big fluffy cat.

"Follow me!" She exclaimed making her way to a desk.

After I had signed multiple papers, the cat already bored had jumped to the ground.

"That's one big cat!" I said as I stared down at him.

"Yeah, His name is Giant. He's mine, I bring him to work with me. Want to look at cats?" I nodded, hugging myself as I followed her to a big room.

I felt someone's presence behind me, stopping me in my tracks. I instantly turned around. A tall blond man staring down at his watch stood right before me. His eyes shot up, right at me.

His tux was tucked behind a gun, once he saw where my gaze was lingering he instantly straightened his jacket.

A hand shot me out of my thoughts.

I looked at the small woman, with her glasses on the bridge of her nose still smiling. I nodded before following her. I twisted my head to the side only to see that the man was gone.

I sighed as we reached a small door. We could see everything that was inside from the glass door, but the woman flew the door open in front of me.

Cats filled all the corners, they were all nuzzling with each other on small beds. No one came up to welcome me. After a few seconds, I felt something caressing my legs. Looking down, My gaze met a blue-eyed Persian cat, that was purring and leaving long white hairs on my pants.

"Oh! Hey you!" I crouched down taking it in my arms.

"That's Brie." the woman said as I was busy petting Brie's stomach as she stretches and purrs happily. After what felt like hours of petting and playing with cats, I decided to go back home.

I said my goodbyes, my heart aching as I watched Brie staring at me behind the glass door.

I walked down the Blue carpet, with my gold bodycon minidress. The bodyguard guided me in. I stepped in the crowd looking around, people laughing, holding drinks and dancing.

My eyes suddenly caught Adam's. His eyes lingered on my V-neck from afar, then it went down to my thighs, stopping on my long heels. He grabbed a whiskey from the bar, while his eyes went up to mine.

I felt my body being burned by his gaze. I cleared my throat and walked up to him. That's when I saw Jett. His uncle. He sat his back facing me, but his broad shoulders and grey hair gave it away.

"Hello." I greeted making Jett turn around fixating me with his piercing stare. His wrinkles were shown perfectly around his dark eyes. His beard grew up from the last time I saw him. He got up from his seat holding his hand up.

"Miss Johnson, nice seeing you again." I shook his hand as I slightly smiled.

"You too, Sir."

"Take a seat. My son will arrive at any minute." He said making me furrow my eyebrows as I sat on the chair next to Adam's.

He was sitting stiff as a board his fists on his thighs, grabbing them making his knuckles turn white. He looked down at the Glass in front of him, before waving his hand to the bartender.

"Sec vodka," I said before Adam could decide for me. His eyes widen as the bartender nodded.

"Hello, father!" My head snapped to the voice, only to notice the man that took a seat next to me.

"Hello, cousin!" The blonde man clenched his jaw as he slightly looked at Adam.

Then he turned to look right at me.

"Hello, beautiful! Nice to see you again." He whispered in my ear, making my eyes draw to Adam fisted hands.

"You two met before?" Adam arched his eyebrows at his cousin.

"Yes, in the cat centre." His cousin said as he reached his hand to rest it on my leg, I jerked up a bit. Adam got up from his seat reaching his cousin's collar. His Adam apple was waving up and down as his veins surfaced next to it.

"You touch her one more time Mario." He hissed down at him, making his cousin smile, satisfied with Adam's reaction.

"Or what?" Jett got up, looking at both of them as he lights up a cigarette.

Adam instantly let go of Mario, his gaze not leaving him.

"Let's talk about business kids," Jett said as he puffed out the air from his mouth.

Mario nodded ruffling his gold curls to the back, He signalled to the bartender to prepare him a drink.

"Do you trust her." Jett pointed his finger that holds a cigarette right at me, looking at his nephew.

Adam nodded, before taking a sip from his glass. The bartender came in front of me to set my drink.

"Thank you." I smiled at him. He mutually returned it.

Suddenly a phone rang. Adam reached down to his pocket. He groaned loudly before excusing himself. He strode out of the bar leaving me with both men watching me.

I cleared my throat as a woman with a small top, that made her breast pop out of it, approached us and whispered something in Mario's ear. He nodded before leaving holding her hand.

"Huh Kids always want to play," Jett started puffing the cigarette in my face. He grinned sitting next to me.

I looked down at my drink with shocked eyes, once I felt a cold object on my thigh.

"You should know one thing, Zoe," Jett whispered in my right ear pressing his gun on my bare skin under the bar counter.

"If you hurt one of my boys, I'll hurt you badly."
