- TWENTY-FIVE -
Abigail's steps were quick as he went through her colleague's offices, searching for a specific person. She was biting her bottom lip, her hands into fists. Her face was tomato red, rushing inside Mason's office without knocking. Mason jumped up with his palm on his chest, breathing deeply and fastly.
"What the hell, Abigail!?"
Abigail walked closer to him, raised her arm, and slapped him with strength. He almost lost his balance as he brought his hand on his cheek that had turned crimson red.
"WHAT THE FUCK!? WHY DID YOU SLAP ME!?"
"I told you NOT to say anything about the rape part to Felix, and you went ahead and opened your big arse mouth!"
"He had to know sooner or later! He's our boss; He has to know what terrible things Damon has done to you, love!"
"I wanted to say it, not you!"
"I am sorry! I just got so anxious with all this! I am so sorry, you're right, what I did was bad...."
Mason held both her hands and looked down with a slight frown. She sighed and glared away, mad with him. She gulped, and he kissed her cheek softly with a soft smile.
"I love you, Abigail."
She walked towards the door and opened it slightly. She took a breath and turned to Mason with a fake smile.
"I love you too, Damon...."
She was ready to step outside when her smile disappeared, and she felt the world darken around her. Her eyes widened as she turned her attention back to Mason, who was leaning against the office with crossed arms.
"I-I meant...."
"I know exactly what you meant, darling. We'll talk later."
And as Mason was left alone, thinking that Abigail tangled her tongue with the names, Abigail returned back to the surface for a walk. It was a chill day; she cursed under her breath for calling her boyfriend "Damon". She pushed her hands in the pockets of her jacket, looking down. Damon being around was a bad omen; Felix had messed up things. He had to leave them alone; she couldn't deal with him anymore.
Abigail knew the truth at the end of the day. She loved Damon, but she threw her feelings at the fire and destroyed them because she couldn't be with him. If she stayed with him, she had to stop every contact with Mason and Felix. Mason was a lovely guy, and she couldn't easily resist his politeness. Damon was a different kind of breed, but to her, he was everything her heart craved. But, as Felix always said, "The good guys always win at the end."
Abigail's arm was grabbed by a stranger as he pushed her into an alley. She left a yell, her system ready to fight back the moment the stranger pressed her against the brick wall. Her glare softened, though, as her eyes faced a smiling Damon.
"Damon...."
"Hello, sweetheart."
Her breath disappeared, and she shoved him to the other wall with a chuckle. Damon had forgotten how strong she was. He smiled and laughed and put his palms on her cheeks, his thumbs under her cheekbones, caressing them gently. Abigail couldn't take her eyes off him; she was frozen in place with his head between her hands against the light-coloured brick wall.
"Why are you spying on Mason and me?"
"How did you disappear in the metro?"
They both gulped at the same time; Abigail pulled away and crossed her arms under her chest, looking down. Damon fixed his tie and hid his hands in the pockets of his pants. She started walking away with a sigh as Damon was following her with steady steps, yelling.
"You never contacted back. Was I a sex toy to you? I thought you had feelings for me; what the hell has Mason that I don't? I mean, I am not ripped like him, and my skin is crack opened from the drugs, but I am trying to get better! I love you with every grammar of cocaine that's rushing through my veins to my heart- "
"I can't tell you about the underground; it's a secret that's in my contract."
"I don't care about the god damn tube at all...! All I care about the last weeks is you and only you!"
Damon raised his hands in front of his body with trembling lips; all her attention was now on him. He was already a bit bitter as she had ignored all his important questions and was focused on the dumb one. He puffed and rubbed his forehead with a half-expressed face.
"Damon, get a hold of yourself...! The time we spent was amazing, but we can't be together because- "
"I am the bad guy, I know; I am tired of everyone repeating themselves!"
There were glares on them now; people were gossiping around. Damon didn't care; he looked tired and done with humans and especially adults. He held her hands tightly and looked her in the eyes, hoping to see a tiny bit of affection towards him.
"Tell me that you love me, hate me, anything, I don't care! Just say you feel something towards me, please! anything, I beg you!"
At this point, Damon was whimpering; the tears that were rolling down his miserable face weren't making her feel better. She gulped and glared away with a guilty look.
"SAY SOMETHING, DAMMIT! I WILL WAIT FOREVER IF I HAVE TO JUST TO HEAR YOUR VOICE!"
"Damon... That week was a mistake...."
And just like that, she let go of his hands with a bitter look. Her tongue felt sour along with her oesophagus. Damon couldn't move; more tears had made their appearance.
"M-... Mistake?"
"I love Mason; I can't lose him. Understand me, please. Let's say I wanted you for the money; let's believe that!"
"But you didn't care for my wealthy shit...! You looked one hundred times happier when we were making that stupid cheesecake than when I was buying you Versace dresses!"
"Damon.... Stop it, no, please...."
"Why are you lying to yourself? You can stay with me, you'll be safe, and Felix will never find you- "
"Felix will follow me wherever I go. I sighed a contract, followed a stupid rebellious dream, and now I am in danger, and every step is uncertain. We don't belong together; you deserve better; believe me on this...!"
"Abigail...."
"Please, pretty pretty please, stay away! For your own good!"
She pushed her fingers through his hair rolling them down his cheek. He's staring at her as his life depended on her.
"And if you don't care about your soul, think about Deetra! Take care of her. James too."
She kissed his wet cheek; she didn't wipe away his tears this time.
"Goodbye, Damon."
She walked away; he didn't follow her. He turned around, his emotions being frozen. His heartbeat was loud as he got to his car with slow steps and trembling feet. He tried to speak, produce a sound, but he couldn't feel his vocal cords.
"Why am I always a mistake to people I love?"
He questioned himself, didn't receive an answer back from the empty car. Damon leaned his head on the leather steering wheel; he felt like a total idiot. Abigail had fooled him worse than other chicks had before, and of course, Deetra was right for one more time. He just wanted to know the truth, but she made things really complicated.
Damon sped up his car; Abigail could see him in the distance as the vehicle disappeared on the horizon. She sighed and grabbed a coffee from a small corner coffee shop. She wanted the answers as much as Damon. She had no idea what was going on inside her head and why she slept with him in the first place. Abigail sipped some coffee and looked at a small lake across the park that she was crossing to get back to her workplace. It was filled with white ducks. She raised her eyebrow, watching two of them fighting over a piece of bread.
"Felix knows Damon's location, how he hasn't killed him yet...."
One of them bit the other; ducks have way sharper teeth than they seem to. The other duck swam away, a trail of blood on the water as the duck quacked in pain. Abigail raised her eyebrows, a bunch of ducks attacking the duck that bit like it was an enemy. She swallowed deeply as she saw the duck's corpse lying beside the lake a couple of seconds later.
"I guess I have to ask Felix for this."
When Damon arrived at the mansion, it was surprisingly quiet. A bodyguard nodded, seeing him as Damon eyed him with a chuckle.
"Where's my sister?"
"In the living room, sir."
"Is she alone?"
"Yes, sir."
Deetra flinched the moment her brother stepped into the room. She raised her eyebrow as he looked severe with his arms behind his back.
"What did you do this time?"
She smiled softly; Damon coughed and cleared his throat. He felt a knot in his stomach that would get tighter at any second. She put her hands on his shoulders with a more giant smile.
"Damon?"
"I... I talked to her... She... She doesn't want to see me again."
"Do you mean Abigail by saying "her"?"
"Mhm..."
"What were you expecting?"
"I-I don't know...!"
Damon raised his arms along with his voice before calming down by sitting on the leather couch. Deetra sat beside him and patted his shoulder with a neutral face.
"I don't understand what I did wrong this time... I treated her as good as I could, and she turned back to Mason... How do I manage to lose every girl I see romantically?"
"Damon..."
"I-I end up looking like a monster! Am I a monster, Deetra? Is this who am I? Mom always said- "
"Damon! For god's sake, calm down...."
He took a big breath and covered his face with his palms. His legs were trembling, and he could barely look his sister in the eyes. Deetra hugged him with all her strength as he buried his face in her neck, hugging her back, holding tight on her.
"I want mom back, Deetra...."
"I know Damon; I wish she was still alive, too...."
Everyone close to Damon knew how big of a crybaby he was. Selena, Deetra, James, and finally... Abigail. He held back his tears this time; it wasn't worth it. Damon felt shivers down his spine as he pulled away from the hug; his sister looked at him with a confused look.
"Are you okay?"
"I... I am not like our father, right...?"
"What do you mean?"
"I mean... I am not like... ya know... always angry, with a terrible mood degrading everyone around me...."
"Oh, Damon..."
Deetra laughed, patting his shoulder for one more time before gulping.
"You're not a monster. You're not our father. You are and will always be a better person than him, don't worry."
Damon sighed in relief with his hand on his chest before giving his sister a big kiss on her cheek.
"That was so relieving! Thank you, Deetra!"
Damon giggled and smiled before seeing her rub her cheek with a disguised look.
"And that was disgusting, ew. Don't ever do it again."
"Whatever you say!"
Damon was already heading to the garage.
"Where are you going?"
"Getting a big job, done!"
The moment Damon opened the garage door, another essential person was opening a door, this time an office's door, to meet a particular person, her boss.
"Boss!"
"Abigail? What is wrong this time?"
Abigail took a seat before Felix managed to say anything. He scoffed in unpoliteness and crossed his hands on his office. She puffed and grabbed her breath before jabbering.
"We know Hopkins' location; why we haven't killed him yet?"
"Cause he is with bodyguards, all the time."
"He is alone when he is in the centre of London!"
"No, he's not. His bodyguards are secretly around. It's not that easy, Abigail."
"Oh, right...."
Felix laughed and pointed at her head with a grin. She crossed her arms and stared at him with a pouted face.
"Look, Abigail... You don't have to worry about Damon; I'll take care of IT sooner or later. He's low in the black market right now, and there are more dangerous people that we have to deal with."
"Okay...?"
"You don't have to fill your stupid little brain with ideas, scenarios, and plans of taking him out of the way! Live your life with Mason, get the job done, and everything's gonna be okay in the end! Also, I forgive you!"
"Forgive me for what?"
"Forgetting that Damon has hundreds of bodyguards! It's fine; I'd forget that too if I had a small female brain."
Abigail chuckled and scoffed and looked away as Felix smiled gently, showing his white teeth. "Arsehole..." she thought, clicking her tongue against the upper part of her mouth. He threw a folder in the office as she grabbed it. It was written "HOPLITE" on it with big dark blue letters.
"What is this?"
"A new man that's currently thriving in the black market."
"How do you know it's a man?"
"Oh, please, Abigail! Women aren't smart nor strong enough to handle a big illegal business."
"But Deetra- "
"Deetra is her brother's right hand; Damon is the protagonist. Go now, do your job and stop trying to go against me."
"Fine..."
Abigail mumbled, going to her office hugging the folder against her chest with a sigh.
This was the end of her story with Damon. She had to care for her relationship with Mason, and Damon couldn't stay in her life any longer. She knew her words were harsh, but she had to stop him. In reality, she wanted to protect him, take him away from Felix. His downfall in the black market was secretly a blessing. Felix would leave him alone for a while that way.
