- TWENTY-EIGHT -
Damon's head was spinning worse now as he was on the edge of vomiting. His stomach was a mess, and suddenly, the iced coffee tasted horrible. Towards the ride to the mansion, it started raining. There were bolts of lightning and thunder, and the weather was upside down. He was speeding over the limit; the car's engine was making loud noises that were echoing through the empty streets. His eyes were bloodshot red, and he was holding onto the steering wheel like his life was depending on.
It was a miracle how he managed to arrive at the mansion safe and sound with such weather. He left the car outside and didn't get in the trouble of getting it in the garage. Instead, he walked out towards the entrance with steady quick steps; he didn't care about the rain. Damon threw the keys to a bodyguard and ordered him to park the car in the garage. The bodyguard nodded and followed his boss' command.
Damon stepped into the mansion, wet from head to toes. Some tufts of hair were stuck on his forehead. He was panting as drops of water were sliding down his cheeks and chin. He found his sister in the living room holding a cup of warm tea. She narrowed her eyes and had a sip starring at her brother. Deetra was calm, enjoying the weather, and couldn't understand why Damon was so upset.
"It's been almost an hour; where have you been?"
"Abigail goes around telling that I raped her."
"What?"
She left the cup on the coffee table and stood up with a worried look. Damon started walking all around the room with his hands in the air, screaming.
"I went to get some coffee and met Mason by accident, and he started being shitty, and I thought, "Well, of course, I am the bad guy!" but later I learned that Abigail said to him that I raped her!"
"How do you know he told the truth?"
"Well, I don't know, maybe because when I told him that it was a lie, he was left frozen in the bloody spot, not talking or moving at all!"
Deetra took a step back, seeing her brother, who was still walking around trying to calm down. She rubbed the back of her neck and gulped before looking him in the eyes.
"You... didn't... touch her... right?"
"Excuse me?"
Damon turned his chin towards his sibling, gasping in surprise. He wasn't waiting for such a question and was caught off guard.
"OF COURSE NOT! Deetra, get a hold of yourself! Yes, I had sex with her, but not like this! A woman took care of me when my father disappeared out of nowhere, and a woman is there for me every time I mess up to fix my shitty life. Are you kidding me!? I don't see you as a thing; I am not a rapist, dammit!"
"You're right, I am sorry... That was... so idiotic of me to ask...."
Deetra whispered and sat back down, rubbing her hands together. Damon breathed loudly; the weather was getting worse. He rubbed his eyes and undid some buttons of his shirt.
"Can you take care of everything today, pretty please?"
"Yeah, sure... Where are you going?"
"Just to my bedroom... This day started really crappy... I need to lie down a bit...."
"Are you gonna be fine?"
"Yes... Don't worry about me...."
While Damon enjoyed his bed as he wanted from the early morning, Mason returned to his workplace in the worst mood possible. The tea felt bitter out of sudden, and his heart broken in half. He sighed and sat at his office, rubbing his face. He didn't know what to do; he wanted to talk to someone but couldn't face his girlfriend currently. He lifted his head as he felt a hand on his shoulder and a warm smile against his face. Abigail rubbed his shoulder and lowered her head to face him.
"Are you okay, darling?"
He didn't know what to answer. Yes, but actually no. He just learned that his partner said a massive lie for no reason. Damon just witnessed Mason's heart dying in front of him. Mason didn't have the guts to ask her why she lied.
"Yes, is Felix here?"
"As far as I know.... Is everything alright?"
"Yes, I just want to talk to him about a case...."
Mason stood up and pushed Abigail to the side. He started walking towards his boss' office quickly, leaving behind a confused Abigail. She didn't question his behaviour.
Mason knocked on the door and waited patiently for an answer. He walked in and closed the door behind with quick movements when he heard Felix's deep voice. He sighed; his skin was more pale than usual, he looked sick.
"How can I help you, Mason?"
"I need to talk to someone about Abigail...."
Felix sighed and put some papers aside, turning off his computer. He crossed his hands in front of his body and looked at Mason with half-closed eyes.
"It's office hours Mason, and I don't pay you to follow around, Abigail."
"I know, but... I... She wasn't raped by Damon, Felix... She lied to... me...."
Felix gulped and tried to get more comfortable in his seat.
"How do you know that? Did Abigail tell you?"
"I... No... I learned it by someone else...."
"Who?"
"Felix, please...."
Felix stood up and walked all the way around his office to Mason. He sighed and sat beside him, putting his hand on his shoulder. Mason was looking down; he seemed hopeless.
"Mason, we know each other since you were a teenager... Don't you trust me?"
"Of course, I do; it's just...."
"Then what are you waiting for? I am a tomb; I won't say a soul to Abigail, and you know it."
"I... met Damon accidentally, and I lost control and started yelling -"
"You saw Smiley?"
Felix's attention was now on the name and not on Mason's story. He smirked, but his smile was lost when he heard Mason's following words.
"Yes, I... I didn't get him, I started screaming, telling him how big of a monster he was, and he didn't understand a word. When I told him about the rape part, he was as lost as me... Damon told me he didn't touch her without consent, and he was telling the truth... They had sex, though, a lot of times...."
"What... You lost Smiley!?"
Felix jumped up angrily, holding the head between his hands. Mason kept looking down; he messed up for one more time. He focused on Abigail and learning what he wanted from Damon when he could shoot him with some anaesthesia and take him to Felix.
"I am sorry, boss, it's just -"
"SHUT UP! BLOODY HELL! I DON'T GIVE A FUCK ABOUT YOUR SLUT!"
Mason was left with wide eyes; he stood up and took steps away from his boss, going towards the door. Felix took some breaths with closed eyes and fixed his tie. A smile took over his lips as he leaned against his teeth.
"Mason, Mason, Mason, I am so so sorry. My behaviour was wrong; you are right. But, let's focus on the real problem; that is not you letting Smiley escape; it's Abigail lying about something so serious. Why do you think she did that?"
"Well, uh, because I guess she... uh... I don't know... Because you sent us to kill Damon, and she... um... got on top of him?"
"Good idea! Or maybe because she didn't want you to know that while she liked you, she still went around to fuck with a rich dude for fun!"
"Um... uh...."
"Oh, shush, Mason! I know how much you like Abigail! We both know there's only one way to keep her by your side... forever."
"A way?"
Felix smirked and raised his left hand. Mason gulped, seeing the wedding ring around his ring finger, and tried not to focus on it and look away. He couldn't possibly force Abigail into marriage; that would be equal to pushing her to stay with him forever. There must be another solution.
"Felix, no... That's not... me. I can't force a woman into marriage."
"Who says you'll force her, Mason? If you make her mind, it's not forcing!"
"I-I don't know...!"
"Oh, c'mon be a man, Mason!"
"I'll think.... about it... I better be going...."
"Back to work, Mason, back to work...!"
Mason left his boss's office with a bitter taste in his mouth and uneasiness in his stomach. Felix sat down in his leather chair with a smile on his lips and got all comfortable. He dialled a number on his iPhone and brought it to his ear. Felix was humming a melody while listening to the dialling, waiting for the person on the end of the line to answer.
"Felix?"
"Did I wake you up, my sunshine?"
"Yes, it's fine, though... Are you alright?"
"Yes, my darling, I was just wondering... There's an issue, and I need your help."
Sophia yawned and stretched her body; Felix giggled softly like a schoolgirl when he heard her leave a soft groan.
"I am listening, my love....."
"Mason's thinking of proposing to Abigail, but she isn't ready for marriage yet... Is there a way to make her rethink that decision?"
"I could come over and talk to her a bit! Plus, I'd love to see your pretty cute face!"
Felix laughed and shifted around some papers pressing the phone closer to his ear with his shoulder.
"I know, my dear, but isn't it dangerous? Leaving the house all alone, getting a cab until here- "
"Love, I have a bodyguard, and I'll be fine, don't worry."
"I guess so... Be careful; I wouldn't want to lose a delicate little flower like you, my darling...."
"Oh, I know Felix.... I know...."
He could feel her smile on the other side of the line.
"I can't wait to see your smile, Sophia. Talk to you soon."
"Okay, I love y- "
Felix hung up the phone call before she finished her sentence. He ignored her words along with the sigh that was heard in the end. He continued his work and left his iPhone aside.
Sophia was used to Felix's behaviour. He was always so kind, polite, nice towards her. He would do anything so she'd be happy but was always so distant. On the one side, she wasn't complaining; her husband provided her with a lavish lifestyle. But, on the other side, Sophia was craving some attention and validation from her husband, and she would barely get enough. Felix was away for hours and days and sometimes even weeks, and she was stuck in a big house with bodyguards.
She didn't mind; she knew how dangerous it would be for her to be around alone. So many people disliked her husband and would do anything to see him below the ground. His parents had moved away from London, so Sophia was the only person close to him.
Sophia dressed up in a baby blue dress with a pair of white high heels. She sighed, putting some make-up on, wanting to look beautiful for her husband. She was spending her time in the house exercising and taking her of herself. She would do the most out of all, in fear that Felix may leave her for a different woman even if he seemed loyal.
She has never touched a car's steering wheel. She sat comfortably in the back seat of the jeep as the bodyguard started the engine. Sophia leaned on the window and sighed. She barely got out of the house, and when Felix allowed her, there was always a bodyguard around her. Well, maybe "allow" isn't the right word; she wasn't a prisoner. He would always let her go out, just not alone. Felix wanted his wife to be safe and sound twenty-four seven.
Sophia jumped a bit when the vehicle stopped out of nowhere. She looked at the London underground in front of her; she always confused these secret doors and entries. The bodyguard guided her through the underground and a door that wasn't visible to everyday citizens. She groaned, walking; the high heels suddenly didn't feel as comfortable as she thought.
Her face lit up as she burst into the facility going straight to her husband's office. She ignored the pain on her feet, and with quick steps, she ran into Felix's office without knocking.
"Felix!"
Sophia smiled and opened her arms for a hug. Felix was sitting on his computer working, his eyes stuck on the colourful screen, ignoring his wife's silhouette and expressions.
"Sophia, I've told you to knock before you get into a room; you're not five."
The smile was washed away as she lowered her head along with her arms feeling embarrassed. Her excitement was long gone; she looked around the room while rubbing her arms before facing Felix.
"Um... Sorry, you're right...."
"I'm always right, Sophia. Don't forget that, darling."
Sophia whispered, but he was quick to answer back.
"So... I was wondering if we could go together ton- "
"Will you talk to Abigail? I am busy right now for chit-chat. I have a job."
"Sorry, sorry... Yeah, right... I'll go to her office...."
"Good, be useful for once."
Sophia closed the door behind her, with tears in her eyes. She took a big breath and wiped them away with a smile. Felix wasn't mean; he was probably stressed over something, and she triggered him. Yeah, that sounded right in her mind. She probably did something and made him angry; it wasn't his fault he behaved like that towards her.
She stopped outside her door and grabbed the door handle. Sophia stopped in her tracks and knocked on the door, waiting for a response. She opened it only when she heard Abigail's voice.
Abigail was surprised when she saw Sophia as she never stepped into her office before. She closed the door and waiting in the entrance while playing with her thumbs.
"Sophia? Can I help you? Are you searching for Felix? He's in his office- "
"No, no, he's busy, and I was wondering if I could sit here for a bit... I don't really feel... comfortable around so many men...."
"Oh, I totally understand! C'mon, take a seat!"
Sophia smiled and grabbed the chair in the corner, bringing it opposite Abigail and sitting down. Abigail continued typing on her computer; Sophia looked down, feeling upset with her husband's behaviour.
"How are you, Sophia? Everything good with Felix?"
"Um, I guess... How are you with Mason?"
"Good, but he's a pain on the arse lately."
"I don't want to seem impolite, but... Is it because of the marriage thing?"
"How you... know?"
Abigail stopped typing and turned her chin towards Sophia, who was fixing her dress. She smiled softly and looked away.
"Felix told me about that evening you were out at the restaurant. He didn't want to seem like pushing you guys just...."
"I know."
Sophia got all quiet in seconds again. She took a breath and looked Abigail in the eyes.
"I am not here to judge you or anything, Abigail but Mason is a diamond among the straw; he's one in a billion... He looks like such a good guy, and it would be a shame to lose him...."
"I won't lose him, Sophia. Thanks for the concern, though."
"If you say so... I can't imagine my life without Felix...."
"Hm?"
Abigail turned her head and looked at some papers and then back at Sophia, who had a smile on her lips and played with her thumbs.
"I know the word "marriage" echoes badly, but to me, it's the insurance that he will always be there for me, give me all his love, and help me. Every time I see the ring around my finger, it gives me a tiny bit of hope that I'm not alone in this life...."
Sophia's eyes had started filling with tears; Abigail stood up and went beside her.
"Sophia...?"
"I'm sorry, it's just... it's stupid; you don't have the fear that Mason may... leave you behind someday?"
"Well, there's always the fear of a breakup, but...."
There was a knock on the door; both the women's attention was on it now. "Yes?" Abigail mumbled, her boss walked in. He fixed his tie and looked at both of them.
"Oh, my darling, you're here! What a surprise. I need to talk with Abigail privately...."
"Oh, of course...."
Sophia stood beside Felix for a second; he smiled and kissed her forehead. She smiled softly and left them alone. He closed the door behind and sighed with a serious face.
"What's wrong, boss?"
"Sit down."
Abigail had stood up only to sit back down. She crossed her legs and glared at him.
"Mason knows the truth."
