- FORTY-FOUR -

It's been a while since Damon wore one of those expensive suits that he hid in the back of the closet, available only for specific circumstances. He stood in front of the full-body mirror, fixing his tie correctly for the first time in his life. He puffed; he didn't like this suit at all, it felt uncomfortable, but he wore it anyway. Deetra was glaring at him from the corner of the room in a beautiful crimson red dress. She stood behind him and put her hands on his shoulders while looking at the mirror.

"Are you sure you want to do this, Damon? We don't have to -"

"It's fine; it's the last thing I can do."

Damon grabbed a present that was wrapped in bluish ribbon and was on his bed.

He drove all the way to a garden outside of London, and it was used for events. Thankfully, there was a small hill beside it and a road leading to the peak. People wouldn't notice him, and he wouldn't disturb Abigail's wedding.

Damon stood on the hill with his hands in his pockets, looking around while Deetra stayed in the car glaring from the window outside. She could see bitterness in his eyes that slowly turned into hate for himself when he saw Abigail from the corner of his eyes. Abigail, of course, saw him, and after the wedding, she climbed all the way up the hill to talk to him. Damon turned his head, his eyes widening when he faced Abigail, her body wrapped in a white wedding dress. She looked like Aphrodite, even prettier than her. A smile took over her lips; he could see why Mason was so in love with her waiting for her from high school.

"D-Damon! Y-You came!"

"I couldn't lose your wedding."

Damon held both her hands with a soft grin; they were warmer than every summer day in London. He didn't have the guts to keep eye contact with her; he would start tearing up sooner or later.

"How's Sophia?"

"Well, she's fine now, but Felix got more overprotected over her. It breaks my heart knowing what she gets through every day, but I can't do much, unfortunately...."

Damon nodded and looked away. He should be in Mason's position, and Mason should hold her hands right now, wishing he was the groom, not the other way.

"How's Deetra?"

"She's okay, spending most of the days away with James. They'll go on a trip together!"

"Oh, that's so cute!"

"I know... Oh, I got you a present!"

Damon walked to the car and opened the door. He held the present with his two hands and extended them with a smile. Abigail held it between her fingers before shaking it gently with a confused look. Damon giggled; every one of her actions was cute.

"What's this?"

"You have to open up to find out!"

Damon laughed, Abigail grinned in response. He wanted to kiss her so badly but instead took a step back. Maybe because he had morals and understood that he had lost Abigail as a married woman. Or perhaps because he saw Mason a couple metres away, he didn't want to destroy a marriage a few hours after it happened.

"Hello, Damon."

Mason stood beside his wife with a low smirk. Damon knew that Mason had a god complex in his mind, wanting to show off how he ended up with Abigail and not him, wanting to show how he was better than a drug baron.

"Hello, Mason. Congrats on your wedding, mate."

Damon lifted his hand, Mason looked at it hesitantly before shaking it with a smile. The tension was visible, but Abigail being there was making the atmosphere a bit better.

"Thank you, Damon."

"I got a gift for you."

"Oh, that's really nice of you, thank you."

Mason looked a bit bitterly, he didn't want Damon around at his wedding, especially after what happened to Sophia, but he couldn't say no to Abigail, even if he couldn't understand why she wanted him here. Abigail turned to her husband and kissed him on the lips; Damon froze for a second and tried not to swear or panic. His hate for Mason wasn't visible yet.

"I'll leave you alone for a bit; thanks for the present again, Damon."

Abigail smiled and left; Mason kept grinning until his wife was out of sight. He turned back to Damon, this time with a serious face.

"You really must be out of your mind to come all the way here after what you've done."

"Well, Abigail invited me. You should be thankful I didn't walk right beside Felix and didn't sit in the first row, arsehole."

Mason chuckled and ignored his comment for Abigail's shake. He didn't want to destroy his day; it would be dumb.

"How does it feel not winning in the end, Hopkins?"

Damon laughed, hearing Mason; he thought he did something because he grabbed Abigail right out of his hands. He pushed his hand against Mason's chest and smirked.

"Enjoy the moment while it lasts, Cox. All happy things rot in the end, and "evil" wins. Just give it some time."

Mason was ready to answer back, not enjoying Damon's attitude when a female voice caught him off guard.

"Hello, Lester."

Mason chuckled; Deetra was bored enough and couldn't stay in the car any longer. Mason walked to her with a grin and held her hand before giving it a kiss.

"Miss Deetra, such a pleasure to have you around. Still beautiful, I see."

"Congratulations on your wedding, idiot."

Deetra rolled her eyes, the same smirk still playing on his lips.

"Thank you, Deetra. I wish you the best with James."

"I wish I could say the same about you with Abigail."

Mason laughed at her comment and went back to Damon, today was his day, and these little stupid comments didn't really affect him.

"Will you ever talk to her about the rape?"

Mason's smile left his face as he gulped, crossing his arms. He had forgotten it, or so thought. Abigail never mentioned it again after that time in the park. He lowkey wished she said the truth already, but this wouldn't happen any time soon. Maybe, Mason had to open a conversation about it sometime.

"Perhaps after the honeymoon is over. Maybe, then... I-I don't know."

Mason was stuttering in anxiety, looking away; Damon had for real hit a susceptible spot.

"Your choice; it doesn't have to do anything with me anymore."

"Yes, right... I better be going."

"I hope our paths will cross again, Cox."

"They will if you continue staying close to MY wife, Hopkins."

Mason grinned proudly, winking, receiving a soft groan from Damon.

After returning to his wedding, Damon continued standing there on the hill, watching the small crowd in front of him. Deetra stood beside him, her hands crossed in front of her chest. Her eyes looked to the left, facing her brother, who was lost in his thoughts, staring at the horizon.

"Does it hurt, Damon?"

"A lot. Now that I know that I lost her forever, it hurts way more than I thought."

Damon sighed; usually, in such moments, he was in tears but not this time. Seeing Abigail happy and safe and sound was a true blessing, even if he wished she was wearing that white dress for him and not for Mason.

Damon knew from the start that he didn't have many chances, but his hope would die last.

"She's smiling; it brightens up her face."

"Well, she's happy; who can we blame? She deserved this. It feels rough, though, knowing she is smiling for someone else and that someone is not me."

"Damon, how do you feel, for real right now."

Deetra turned her head to her brother, who sighed and puffed distressed. He lost her, the end. There was nothing more, nothing less. He had one target, and he failed.

"I don't believe in that celestial bullshit, but I feel like I lost my... soulmate."

Deetra laughed and panted her sibling's shoulder gently before going straight to the car.

"C'mon, Damon, think positive. Maybe you'll be together in another lifetime."

"That's what I'm holding into... I guess it wasn't written in the stars to be together now...."

Damon sighed and got in the driver's seat before looking in the rearview mirror facing his sister. Deetra was leaning back and had already fastened her seatbelt, looking outside enjoying the wedding.

"It wasn't meant to be together, Abigail. Or I hope so."

Damon mumbled to himself before starting the engine. The trip back to the mansion would feel long after what he just witnessed. She was happy; that's all it mattered. Damon's feelings, unfortunately, wouldn't die that easily, though.

Mason won; of course, he would win. He only hoped Abigail still wanted him by her side and won't forget him. Things would turn out great, or so he hoped. He couldn't lose her again.
