- TWO -
James' family had a huge garden just behind their house in Italy, and it was filled with various flowers and always dipped in different smells. James didn't remember it, though, and only could see it through some old photos. He was too young when he migrated to Great Britain and can barely remember Italy, unlike his sister. Sometimes, he felt jealous of her as she remembered until this day their beautiful house and pretty garden while his memories were empty.
James still remembers the first day he stepped into the twins' mansion. He wasn't fascinated by the expensive leather and gold that was covering the pieces of furniture nor by the marble floor. His teenage eyes lit up the moment he faced the garden in the backyard. He was always really close to Damon, but he wanted to spend more time with Deetra when he found out that she loved flowers as much as him and had ordered the gardener to plant all of them.
James was sitting in the garden, among the flowers, while Deetra was in her room. His body was against the fresh-cut grass when she went to find him. She saw him lying there with closed eyes; she knew he would be there.
Deetra stood over her boyfriend, hiding the sun. James opened his eyes and lifted his body the moment he faced his girlfriend. She sighed and sat by his side; he brought his knees to his chest and continued glaring at her with worried eyes. His eyes had a darker blue than usual; Deetra swore she could see storms and thunders and a restless ocean in them.
He moved his fingers closer to her shyly, slowly intertwining his with hers. She wasn't looking him in the eyes; Deetra was starring down. She looked calmer than before, but James couldn't understand what was wrong.
"I need you to know that whatever's happening, I am by your side... I can't understand if I have made a mistake and you avoid me but... I don't want to lose you. I am so sorry for whatever I... did."
A gentle smile took over her lips as she exhaled hearing him. Deetra turned her head and glared at him anxiously.
"I... well... my period was late, and I was worried I was pregnant, but it seems I am not...."
James looked at her with wide eyes before bringing her to his chest and hugging her. She stayed there, frozen in her position, liking his body's warmth.
"You bloody idiot, you should have told me..! I could go and buy one for you- You shouldn't just go around avoiding me, Deetra...!"
"I know, I know, and I am sorry, it's just... I don't know what I would do if I were pregnant...."
James moved his hands to her cheeks, cupping them softly before giving her a kiss on the lips. He had missed his Deetra dearly, even if it was a couple of days where she held that attitude.
"If you were pregnant and wanted to abort it, I'd be by your side. If you wanted to keep it, I'd accept my duties as a father and continue staying with you. You wouldn't get rid of me that easily...."
Deetra giggled at the last sentence and looked away. James pulled away and grabbed her hand, giving it a soft kiss, soon receiving her attention back.
"All I want is to make you feel happy and loved, Deetra."
"You make me happy, James."
She smiled wide as he sighed and glared down with a sad smile.
"You could have anyone; you're a strong independent woman who runs the business around even if Damon gives the orders, and for some reason, you chose to love me. I don't understand...."
Deetra laughed and closed the gap between them. She brought her hands on her knees, and soon her eyes were on his silhouette.
"James, I love you; it's simple as that. You don't have to fill your brain with nasty thoughts...."
Deetra held both James' hands and brought them close to her chest with an innocent smile. James looked at her, confused.
"I love you because you accept me... because I told you that I like pale pink roses and you went around London at every flower shop until you find the perfect bouquet... because... you remember the date of my mother's death and I know you leave flowers by her grave that day... I know it sounds dumb, but these little things matter so much to me... My expectations are way lower than you think even if I grew up being daddy's girl and in riches...."
James laughed softly and glared back at the grass. They stayed there in silence, just looking at the horizon. There was a strange peace and calm around them; Deetra leaned her head against his shoulder.
Deetra and James will remember that small, unimportant moment for the rest of their lives. It was one of these moments that brought so much satisfaction in their lives, being blissful that they ended up together. After all, they both deserved their own happy ending.
At the same time, a married couple is stepping into their house with a newborn baby in the woman's arms. Abigail looked around the living room as she had missed a lot her home. Mason sighed, holding a bunch of bags tiredly; his mind was still stuck on Damon. He couldn't believe how expensive his presents were; Damon shouldn't be close to them at all.
Mason was so angry that he took the baby's so-called diamond earrings and threw the pair in the Thames river when Abigail wasn't looking. He didn't want anything that Damon bought on his kid. He hoped that his wife had forgotten about it and won't look around for the pair.
Abigail left the baby in the baby basket when Mason left it on the couch. Seconds later, she kneeled down, looking through the bags, soon a confused look taking over her face. She kept opening more pockets and pull all the bags' zippers but found nothing. Mason sat down glaring at the baby; he started sweating when Abigail turned to him with crossed arms and an angry face.
"Mason."
"Yes, my honey?"
"Where are the earrings?"
"Which earrings?"
"That pair that Damon gifted to us for the baby."
Mason gulped and raised his shoulders, acting confused. Abigail sighed and sat beside him, sad. Her husband looked at her; he couldn't believe she was so moody over a pair of earrings.
"My love, it was just a present... We could always buy another pair -"
"It was a gift...! And a pretty expensive one! I can't believe we lost it...!"
Abigail stood up and started walking around the living room, distressed. Mason chuckled and leaned back, soon regretting that he threw them away. His wife was close to tears, and he was the reason. Maybe the present meant nothing to him, but to her, it seemed like it meant way more than he expected.
"Uh... I can go and check at the hospital...?"
"Oh, that would be lovely, darling! Thank you so much!"
Abigail kissed Mason gently on the cheek with a smile before grabbing the basket along with the baby and going upstairs.
Mason stood up there cursing under his breath; Damon put him in trouble with his stupid presents. Now, he was feeling shameful that he threw them in the river in his anger.
Mason had managed to grab Damon's contact number from Abigail's phone one day just in case. He dialled the number and brought his phone close to his ear, just wanting to talk to Hopkins and learn about the price.
"Yes?"
Mason could hear Damon's voice from the end of the line, plus his soft chewing.
"Am I interrupting your lunch, arsehole?"
"Oh, it's you- What have I done this time, Cox? If you're searching for your wife, I swear to God she's not in my bedroom this time -"
"Shut up; I just want to know how much the earrings cost."
"The baby's earrings?"
"Yes, of course, idiot!"
"Around 30.000 pounds, why? Oh, don't tell me that you lost them -"
Damon laughed loudly but soon heard nothing from the other end of the line. Mason was so lost in a panic, not knowing what to do as he thought that the earrings were way cheaper than that. Damon stayed on the phone call; he raised his eyebrow, confused, waiting for Mason to answer.
"Mason? Are you there, mate?"
"... I threw the earrings in the Thames -"
It was Damon's turn to stay silent; his anger was slowly building up. He tried to laugh it off, thinking Mason wanted to joke and mess around with him.
"Are you bloody kidding me? Did you throw for real a pair of 30K diamonds earrings in the Thames?"
"Yes."
"Why the hell did you do that!? Are you in the right mind, dude!?"
"Well, Abigail LOVED your gift, and I got furious and threw them there! Now that she can't find them, she's stressed and sorry, and it's your fault!"
"How the fuck it's my fault you decided you don't like seeing your wife happy!?"
At this point, Damon had left the table angry, screaming loudly; his yells were echoing through the house. Deetra and James had no idea what was going on, but Damon was putting quiet the show, so they just stayed at the table enjoying their lunch and his attitude.
"I can't buy SUCH expensive things, and I felt like you were rubbing it at my face! Abigail was talking about that stupid necklace with no stop as we were leaving the hospital all the way to home!"
"S-She did!?"
Damon's face lit up for a second, and a smile decorated his lips. That last phrase gave him too many hopes, and Mason had regretted that already, too. Mason groaned, still panicking; he was outside his house yelling. He just hoped that Abigail hadn't heard him.
"Just buy another pair please, I'll do whatever the fuck you want!"
"Fine, shut up. I'll just go order them at a jewellery shop and pay for the pair, and you'll go grab it, okay?"
"Okay, can you do that today? I just want to go and tell her I found them under the hospital bed or something -"
"Yes, and I will, just shut up with your sobbing!"
Mason sighed and leaned against the entrance door, calming the door slowly. He did something stupid, but Damon will still help him and solve his mistake. Maybe, Damon wasn't that bad after all.
"Thank you so much, Damon..., for helping me out and.. understanding me."
"No worries, I'll send the jewellery shop's address in a bit, so you'll go and take them, okay?"
"Yeah, that sounds fine...."
"Great, see you around, Mason."
Damon hung up the phone with a soft grin before returning to the table to finish his meal. Both James and Deetra glared at him, confused as he fixed his shirt.
"Is everything alright, Damon?"
"Oh, it's my time to shine, Deetra!"
Damon laughed before standing up; he grabbed his jacket and left the mansion.
Mason was waiting patiently for Hopkins' message. When he received it and saw the address, he relaxed more. The shop was about twenty minutes away from London's centre, and he just hoped he would find it easily.
Mason found the jewellery shop relatively easy; he smiled when he faced it. He fixed his black jacket and walked in, soon seeing an employee standing there with his suit and tie.
"Hello, sir, how could I help you?"
The main smiled as Mason looked around; it sure looked like a pretty expensive jewellery shop.
"I am for an order made from Damon Hopkins."
"Oh, give me a second, please."
The man looked through a big black book that was on the other end of the shop. A few minutes later, he returned to Mason with a confused look.
"There aren't any orders under that name, sir."
Mason stared back being as confused as the employee. He rechecked his phone to make sure it was the correct address and the right shop, as Damon said. Indeed, it was.
"Are you sure there isn't any order from someone named Damon Hopkins?"
"Yes, sir."
"About a pair of diamond earrings?"
"I could check again if you would like."
"Please, if you could."
When the man left, Mason turned around, facing the shop's entrance and called Damon. He wasn't picking up the phone even after calling him about four or five times in a row.
"There isn't an order about a pair of diamond earrings on that name, sir."
Mason jumped a bit back, hearing the man's voice as he hadn't realized he was standing in front of him.
"Oh... Thank you very much."
"Have a great day, sir."
"You... too...."
Mason left the jewellery shop, still being confused. He called Damon for the last time, hoping he'll pick it up but no answer back.
He did the only thing he could do; he returned home not knowing how to tell the truth to Abigail. The moment he unlocked the door, he heard his wife giggle from upstairs. He raised his eyebrow, confused, before walking upstairs.
Mason opened their bedroom's door, soon seeing the last thing he wanted that day. Abigail was sitting on the bed and Damon beside her with his daughter in his arms and a smirk on his face.
"Mason, you're back! Did you find the earrings? Oh, it doesn't matter that much -"
"What is Damon doing here."
Mason stayed at the room entrance with his hands into fists, a growl escaping his mouth. Damon rolled his eyes and continued playing with the baby; Mason was ready to tear him apart.
"Well, Damon told me you informed him that we lost the earrings and he was so kind that he went and bought another pair!"
"Plus, a diamond bracelet for the baby- Let's not forget it."
Damon grinned standing up, the baby still in his arms. Mason tried hard not to cause a scene, but he was hanging on the edge by now.
"Maybe I'll get her a whole arse diamond set on her first birthday- Who knows...."
"That's enough."
Mason wanted to choke Damon already, but him having his daughter in his arms wasn't helping him at all. He had lied to him, of course. Mason had regretted his words; Damon was such a giant monster. He was a huge homewrecker that would do anything to keep him away from Abigail. He didn't care about their marriage nor for their kid.
"I think you should go, Damon."
"Mason!"
Abigail yelled, finding her husband rude. Mason didn't take a step back as he grabbed his daughter from his arms and held her close to his chest. Damon gulped and laughed.
"Have a great day, you two."
Abigail stood up to take Damon outside, but he didn't want more trouble. He raised his palm with a giggle.
"It's fine; I know the exit. Can't wait to see you around more."
Damon walked downstairs and left the house; Mason was still angry even when he was sure he had left.
He turned to Abigail and left the baby in its crib puffing. She glared at him as he sat beside her and held her hand between his fingers.
"We have to talk about Damon now."
