- SIX -
Deetra was screaming at the top of her lungs; she was in danger all the time without knowing it. Damon hid from her something significant; she felt betrayed by her own blood. He tried to take a step closer to her, he raised his hand, wanting to touch her, but she stepped back sad. James stood up, still confused, wanting to hug his girlfriend, but Deetra continued walking away from the two men. She looked scared, in need of some personal space. She ran to her bedroom, Damon followed her with quick movements. James was behind him when he turned, clenching his teeth. "I have to talk to her, James, not you," James sighed, listening to his friend's words, and nodded, returning to the living room.
Damon was standing outside his sister's room now, his hands into fists as he knocked on the door. His sibling didn't answer back; he could hear her cries and sobs. "Leave me alone, Damon," she yelled loudly, but Damon ignored her and opened the door.
The papers were on the armchair in the corner of the room. He glanced at them and then at Deetra, who was in her bed with her head against the pillow. Damon couldn't stand seeing his sister in pain; he sat beside her with his fingers through her hair. She turned around and watched him closely, the mascara was messed up, and her amber eyes were shining with the sun's light against them. He gulped and moved his fingers down her cheeks and chin; her sadness was reflecting on Damon's eyes.
"Why you didn't tell me!? I had every right to know about it, Damon!"
She looked away, sobbing as he glared down. Her brother opened his mouth hesitatingly; the words were barely getting out.
"You're right for one more time, Deetra. I should have said the truth to you and not hide something that serious... I am sorry but... I really hope I protected you...."
Deetra's eyes were on her brother's silhouette; he was biting his bottom from the inside. He didn't know what to say or do; he just stayed silent.
Deetra's body was against her brother now, hugging him with all her force, still in tears. Damon held her back, playing with her hair.
Damon wasn't the best brother in the world. He cared for Deetra and would put his life in danger for her if it meant she'd be safe. Damon never talked to Deetra about the men not wanting to make her hate this life more. She already wanted to run away from London and hide from everyone's eyes because of her family background. Deetra hated this life more than Jason; she hated the constant adrenaline and fear. She didn't want to live between these walls for the rest of her life.
Damon couldn't worry his sister more, so he took care of everything. He was only eighteen, but he was capable of more. Of course, no one believed him. After Selena's death, no one was by his side when he had to rule and give orders. It took him so much time to become independent and understand the whole drug dealing thing.
Once, a man snicked into the mansion. It was a great evening; Deetra would leave the next day and go to Cambridge as she was accepted to Harvard University. Damon was so proud of her and couldn't keep his eyes off her; she was smiling all day, excited with her accomplishment.
When he snicked in, Deetra was fast asleep in her bedroom. Luckily, the security found him before he managed to get to her. It was a young man, around twenty. He was the son of a big gangster that was really known in Italy.
The boy wanted to drug Damon's sister with the chloroform, which he was hiding in his pants pocket. Then, he would rape her until he was sure she was pregnant. When Deetra would find out she was having a kid, he would ask for her hand in marriage. He thought Deetra wouldn't say to her brother about the pregnancy or try to abort it but that she would accept him as her husband, just to hide her strange pregnancy from Damon.
The plan was stupid. It wasn't the youngster's plan though, it was his father's. His dad sent him straight to Damon so the whole family will have some of his riches. That night the boy sacrificed himself without his knowledge. Everyone believed that the twins' relationship was terrible. Damon never understood why they thought such a thing, but there were times like this that such rumour was to his advantage.
Damon murdered the man in seconds. He didn't let him say another word after hearing his father's plan. Damon even put his silencer on the gun before shooting him three times, not wanting his sister to wake up from her peaceful sleep.
It wasn't the first time he shot a person, but he didn't feel bad like other times. Damon forgave himself for killing that man; he deserved it. He just pushed the image of his corpse in the back of his head and never said anything to Deetra. He wanted his sister to feel safe in this mansion with him. He wanted to show her that this was a safe place for her even if their parents weren't around to be a safety net.
A few days later, the guy's father had disappeared. No one could find him, and many thought he was dead. Damon was beyond happy knowing that both father and son were gone and won't be around their legs again.
"I know, Damon, but please, I can't stay forever in your shadow in fear I'll be harmed! I need to know if something's going on...!"
"I... I know. From now on, I'll say to you everything, I promise."
"Thank you, Damon...."
She wiped her tears away with a small smile. Her eyes were back on the papers on the armchair; there was something that made her question a lot of things.
"On one of the papers, our mom said that she hopes Lazaro will keep his promise. Do you have any idea what's that about?"
"Well, I always thought she meant she wanted him to continue taking care of us after her death, but I don't know."
"I want to ask him; I need the truth."
She stood up, walking around the room with her iPhone between her fingers. Damon's eyes widened, seeing her dial the numbers.
"Are you sure about that, sister?"
"Yes."
Deetra frowned, waiting for her uncle to pick up the phone. Lazaro wasn't the brightest with technology and smartphones. Thankfully, his oldest son Domenico taught him a few things about them, and now he could use one easier than before.
Lazaro picked up the phone, there was a cheerful tone in his voice, and Deetra was sure there was a smile on his lips.
"Deetra, my darling! How are you? Is everything alright?"
The cheerful tone turned to a worrying one pretty quickly. She sighed and glared outside. Her flowers were alright; she smiled softly, knowing the gardener was taking care of them.
"Yes, uncle Lazaro, don't worry. Are you free right now to talk?"
"Oh, of course! I'm always free for you and your brother, Deetra."
"I... found a letter that my mother wrote to my brother and I need to ask you something...."
There was silence for a couple of seconds. Lazaro cleared his throat before lighting a cigar. Deetra heard him inhaling deeply before coughing.
"... Go on."
"In the letter, she wrote, as I recall, "I just hope Lazaro will keep his promise.". What did you promise to my mom, Lazaro?"
Lazaro gulped; suddenly, there was no noise from the other side of the line. Deetra narrowed her eyebrows, waiting for an answer. Damon was watching her walk around with a closed mouth.
"I don't think it's a good idea to talk about that right now, Deetra. Especially through a phone call."
"Aren't you in Italy?"
Deetra turned towards her brother, who had lied down in the bed. His arms were behind his head, staring at the painting on the ceiling.
"Yes, but I'll visit London tomorrow for the day, as I have... things to take care of. I could visit you if you'd like."
"That sounds amazing, uncle Lazaro. I can't wait to see you."
She smiled; Lazaro sighed and fixed his shirt, feeling uneasiness.
"Me too, Deetra. Send my best regards to your brother."
"Oh, I will. See you around, uncle."
Deetra ended the phone call and growled, receiving her brother's attention. "So?" he mumbled as she turned to him and sat on the bed.
"He'll come to London tomorrow to do work or something and visit us after when he is free. I can't wait to see what this promise is about."
Meanwhile, Robinson knew he couldn't hold things back anymore. Sophia was asking, again and again, to go visit a doctor to find out if everything's alright. Finally, he had heard her and had made an appointment so they can get both tested. That way, they would know for sure if there's a problem on the horizon.
It's been a while since Felix and Sophia were in the same car. Sophia leaned against the window looking outside at the people and the other vehicles that were moving by. Felix's eyes were on the road, his left arm rubbing her thigh before grabbing her hand. She left a soft sound turning her head and staring at her husband. When he stopped at a red light, he glared back, rubbing her hand with his thumb. Sophia looked at him, confused as he brought her hand to his lips, giving it a gentle kiss.
"I just want to tell you that I love you, and I'll continue loving you even if there's something wrong with your body."
"Oh, Felix...."
"I need to know, though... What... if I'm the problem?"
He looked down with sad eyes; Sophia sighed and pushed her palm against his cheek softly. His face felt warmer than usual, and he looked anxious.
"If it has to do with you, I'll keep loving you too, Felix. My feelings for you won't change because of something you can't control. I just want us to be healthy by each other's side."
A smile covered her pinkish lips, soon Felix smiled back. It was one of these times he looked softer than usual in front of his wife and not some kind of big harsh man. That damn smile wasn't going to leave his mouth soon; Sophia couldn't understand why her husband was so emotional out of a sudden. She tried to ignore the tiny tears that were hiding in the corner of his icy eyes, knowing he'll wipe them away sooner or later.
After doing the tests that their doctor had mentioned, they were free to enjoy the day. The results would be available in a few days, and they couldn't wait to face the problem and try to find a solution. Sophia wasn't feeling good after their appointment, and Felix wanted to take her home so she can lie down and relax for a bit. She insisted that she wanted to be with her husband, though, as they were barely spending time together.
"Felix, if we... manage to have a kid, would you like a girl or a boy?"
Sophia's question caught him off guard. Right now, they were sitting at a café enjoying their coffee and each other's company. Felix let his cup down and looked away.
"Um, I guess... I'd prefer a daughter, not gonna lie."
He laughed softly, scratching the back of his head. She giggled, finding him cute.
"I mean, I just find it... nice, ya know? A small girl running around with her dolls in a beautiful baby pink dress... Just waiting at the house's entrance for me to come home and she'll jump around when she sees my car's lights... Shouting "daddy" when she sees my face waiting for a hug and some kisses...."
Felix was glaring away; he turned his head and looked at Sophia, who was leaning her face on her hands, observing him with a wide smile. He turned red and hid his face between his fingers before groaning. He felt like he ridiculed himself with his words and stupid feelings.
"Anyway, would you prefer a boy or a girl?"
Felix questioned, trying to take the attention away from him. Sophia leaned back in thoughts before grinning.
"I... don't really care; all I want is them being healthy and happy!"
Felix had a sip from his coffee and nodded; his mind was still to his "little princess". He loved kids and their innocence. He glanced at Sophia, who was staring outside while holding her cup of coffee.
She looked so pretty in this white dress. He held her free hand, a smile playing off his pinkish lips. Felix never understood how such a beautiful girl like her ended up with him.
Felix wasn't ugly, and he knew it. It's just his confidence was sometimes really low. There were times he thought Sophia would leave him as he was a busy man with a dangerous life. Instead, she stayed by his side every day, supporting him, even when he was yelling at her. She was indeed a diamond.
"We'll have a kid soon, my love, I promise."
"Felix, do you think we'll be... good parents?"
"Of course! We'll be the best, I just know it! I just can't wait to have a child with you, Sophia...."
He smiled softly, seeing her face turn red. It was one of these times that they looked so much in love with each other. Maybe Felix wasn't as harsh as he appeared to be.
