What Else Can I Do

DC sat in his stuffy office, going over some paperwork he just received from Washington, focused while the calm chaos of the Statehouse played behind his closed door. He flipped a page and signed off on a financial report, putting it in the pile for Washington to deliver then going to the next one. Why couldn't the governor of South Dakota do his own business reports? DC briefly thought, sighing as he signed off on that one as well. He didn't even mind looking it over, or that South Dakota didn't have to do it if it freed him from state matters, but the governor was more than capable of doing this himself. The fed sighed, put the report on the finished pile, and went to the next one.

Outside Loui and Flo were preparing for their day of chaos; they had planned to go by the swamp that was below the hill where the Statehouse rested and visit the gators and fed them some table scraps from supper last night (it was compost, California couldn't exactly complain about it). They initially invited DC but their boyfriend had put his foot down and told them he had to work, much like every day this week. It saddened the chaos pair but they knew they had to accept it, the life of dating a fed. Loui started putting on his boots on the back deck stairs when he heard mumbling coming from the driveway.

"I can't talk to him, he won't listen to me." Georgia whispered talking to Kentucky who was body down in the hood of a car. Kentucky popped his head up and wiped his hands on his shirt.

"Well someone's gotta! Georgie's working himself to death, again!" Kentucky hissed. Loui paused, lacing up his boot, so the dads had noticed it too. Of course they did, they were DC's parents they'd known him longer than any state, but the 'again' made something in Loui freeze.

"I'll have Adam talk to him, maybe he can knock some sense into him." Georgia sighed.

"Or you can let me do it." Kentucky mumbled.

"Taking away the laptop and demanding he rest isn't the way to go!" Georgia yelled. Loui finished tying his boot and stood up, a new determination on his face as Florida came out of the kitchen.

"Ready to go?" Flo asked, already smiling chaotically.

"We're getting darlin' first Flo." Loui announced. Flo frowned.

"But he's already said no." Flo pointed out. Loui gently brushed past Flo and opened the slider door, stepping into the kitchen.

"Well darlin' ain't going to have much of a choice."

DC glanced up at his door opening and smiled at Loui and Flo who stepped inside.

"Hey guys." DC muttered eyes flicking back to his document. God Destantis really was a pain in the ass huh? "How'd the gators go?"

"We haven't left yet." Flo announced with a smile. "We're coming to get you!" DC's head snapped up and he dropped his pen.

"Wha? I told you guys I couldn't." DC pointed out before a pair of boots fell in his lap.

"Well you ain't got a choice right now." Loui demanded. "You're coming with us." DC swallowed and nodded, taking off his nice dress shoes and starting to put on the boots. Loui definitely showed at times he was the leader of the poly, and it was best not to question him when he put his foot down. The only one who ever dared was Flo, and even then he lost more times than he won.

"But I've got this important work to do..." DC tried lacing up his boots.

"Why are you doing the work for Cali's governor?" Flo asked, peeking at a pile of papers to the left of DC. Loui's eyes narrowed at that, and DC quickly changed the subject.

"Only a few minutes, okay? Then I've got to get back to work." DC ordered finishing lacing up his boots. Without a word, Loui and Flo pulled DC up, taking him out of the house and into the backyard to start to make their way down to the swamp. Georgia managed to glance up at the chaos duo heading down to the swamp, with DC following dutifully behind nervously.

"Well I'll be." Georgia muttered, making Kentucky glance up as he lit up a cigarette. "And you said that pairing would be bad for him." Kentucky rolled his eyes, playfully shoved his husband, and went back to the car.

DC held onto some branches as the three made their way down to the swamp, Loui and Flo talking excitedly while DC tried not to fall. As they got closer the dirt quickly was turning to mud, making the fed nervous that he would fall. He couldn't remember his papa's farm ever getting this messy.

"We're nearly there!" Flo called ahead of DC, as he yelped a little and hung onto a branch after almost falling.

"I think we're deep enough! Can we go back?" DC whined.

"We haven't even seen the swamp yet!" Loui pointed out making DC groan. Eventually the three made it to the swamp which was filled with mud, twigs, and leaves thanks to a recent monsoon that passed through the area. It was eerily calm and DC didn't like it.

"Okay, great. We saw the swamp." DC mumbled. "Can we go back now?"

"You haven't seen the best part yet!" Flo said, grabbing a container seemingly out of nowhere and opening it up. DC recognized the food as the leftovers from Cali's meal from the other night, the vegan tacos that Texas roasted which caused a headache all throughout supper. Flo picked up one of the tacos and tossed it up in the air over the swamp. Before the taco could even land, a gator jumped out, snatched it in its big maw, then dove back into the water. The sudden shock of the gator appearing made DC jump back and nearly fall in the mud.

"Awesome huh darlin'?" Loui said with a grin taking out another taco.

"Yeah. Great." DC muttered watching Loui repeat the action. He couldn't remember if his dad's farm ever was close enough to any gators, but then again his uncles never let him go too far in the woods, let alone to any swamps, so his memory was kind of hazy. Another gator jumped out and caught the taco Loui threw, making the chaos duo laugh. Loui turned to DC and held out the container.

"Oh no, no I couldn't." DC stepped back.

"Nonsense Dee! Try it!" Flo begged. DC sighed and picked up one of the tacos, gagging at the smell. Leftover vegan food never did last long, which was why the west was petitioning for Cali to have his own fridge. He chucked the taco over the swamp, not as high as Flo and Loui but still at a decent height. And much like the other two times, a gator popped out of the water and snatched it up, sinking back into the water. DC smiled a little.

"T-That was fun!" DC laughed, hands shaking awhile.

"See darlin' I told-" Suddenly without warning, two gators popped out of the water fighting over one of the tacos tossed into the swamp. The sudden appearance made DC jump back, stumble over his feet and fall into the mud as the gators disappeared back under the water.

"Dee! Are you okay?" Flo asked as he and Loui approached the fed. DC took a moment to process what had happened as he looked all around him. His pants were soaked and he was pretty sure the back of his shirt was as well. When he pulled out one of his hands it was covered in mud and his tie had little flicks of mud as well. DC glanced up at his boyfriends who were still looking down at him in shock and smiled, clutching his hand full of mud making it squish (and relishing in the good feeling for a minute) before throwing it at Flo, hitting him square in the tank top.

"Gotcha!" DC giggled before jumping up and dashing away. Loui and Flo looked at each other, grinned, then picked up some mud before racing after the fed. Thus began a mud slinging race to the top with the three throwing so much mud at one another they were covered by the time they reached the top of the hill. DC fell more times then Loui and Flo, getting more messy as they went on, but the thought of getting clean again and being prim and proper were far from his mind.

Meanwhile at the top of the hill, Kentucky peeked his head up from the hood once again.

"I told ya it was the oil." Kentucky scolded his eldest.

"That noise was not the oil." Gov grumbled crossing his arms.

"Well I keep telling ya to not send it to them fancy Washington mechanics! They mess everything up!" Kentucky pointed out. Before Gov could retort, Flo, Loui, and DC all finally made their way back to the backyard of the Statehouse all covered in mud, bits of grass, twigs, and other debris. They all fell to the ground laughing as the three from the driveway watched on. DC briefly glanced up and jumped to his feet at the sight of Gov, but the smile never leaving his face.

"Hey Adam!" DC greeted approaching his brother.

"Whoa, whoa!" Gov stepped back at the sight of his younger brother all dirty. "What happened to you?"

"Loui and Flo took me to the swamp! I fed an alligator!" DC announced respecting Gov's need for space.

"You should join us next time sha." Loui suggested propping himself up by his elbow.

"Yeah I think I'm good." Gov muttered looking over DC's apperance. "C'mon you're going to catch your death, let's get you into warmer clothes." Gov led DC back towards the house, taking care not to touch him to get his own hands dirty. Before DC went back in he turned back to Loui and Flo, waving.

"Thanks guys! I had a blast!" DC grinned before Gov air shoved him back into the Statehouse to get clean. Loui and Flo snicker at one another before Geo approached, giving them a grin with Kentucky standing beside him, trying to hide his glare.

"Y'all thank you so much, he needed that." Georgia said joyfully before nudging Kentucky, forcing him to speak. Kentucky rolled his eyes and mumbled out a thank you not wanting to admit the chaos pair was good for their boy.

"Sha, we're DC's boyfriends." Loui said, taking off his hat to wipe his forehead, the only clean part of his body at the moment. "This is what we do, we make him happy."
