No Warning Shot
A/N: So this is dark. But if you think about it, this is Pennsylvania/Georgia/Kentucky protecting their family. It's still dark but hey.
Also this is Pennsylvania/Georgia/Kentucky because I'm playing around with this ship
Gov loved helping his dads.
Ever since his dad knitted him a pair of gloves to keep his fingers from touching anything gross, Gov had been jumping at the chance to help his dads. And as the second oldest after Vania, and with his siblings being babies, he was always pulled left and right in-between school to help out with something on the farm.
It was one of those days as Gov held some boards for his papa and pa as they fixed up the newish fence around pa's old house. They only had a few more hours before his mama picked him and Vania up for school, and Gov was going to get the most out of it. Gov watched as his papa forced a post into the hard soil and held it steady as pa banged on it with a hammer to keep it into the ground.
"That's good..." Pa mumbled troubling the mallet and wiping his brow. Papa also stepped back and lifted part of his shirt up, wiping his face from the sweat. Gov looked around the yard at the work that had already been done; unlike their old house in Georgia, papa and pa had been insistent on building a fence, a pretty solid fence that couldn't be penetrated from anything on the outside. Gov's mama even bought them a fancy lock from Philadelphia that papa planned to use at the gate once they finished the fence.
"Pa?" Gov asked innocently as pa took a board gently out of his arms. "Why do we need a fence?"
"Because." Pa said as he measured the board with the two posts they had put up. Papa wiped his forehead again and took a cigarette out of his pocket. "There are some bad people out there and we don't want them coming to our house."
"Will this fence keep them out?" Gov asked as Kentucky lit up. Satisfied with how the boards looked, pa pulled a hammer out of his pocket and started hammering the boards at the post.
"Here's hoping." Pa muttered not looking up from his hammering. Gov watched his pa work before looking up at his papa.
"Papa?" Gov asked quietly. "What happens if they get over the fence?" Papa blew smoke out and kept his eyes on pa.
"Well we have other ways of keeping them out." Papa announced.
Sometimes Gov thought back to those days as an adult, and pieced things together that he didn't notice before.
The fence was beautiful, sturdy and strong it surrounded the old farm house and all the land around it, keeping it safe and sound. No one could get in without using the gate, and no one could get out. It became useful when the babies began walking and toddling around outside, and when food was low by keeping scavengers out.
Gov could remember some nights, waiting for his mama to come pick him up. It would be after super and Vania would be helping Georgia clean up while he read on the couch, and Pennsylvania entertained the babies on the floor. Things would be peaceful.
Until the quiet outside was broken by the fence slamming open.
The entire house would go quiet; Georgia would stop washing the dishes and Pennsylvania would look up from his playing. Vania would want to go look out the window, Gov turning to take a peek to see if it was mama, before Pennsylvania would bark for both of them to stay away. Kentucky would emerge from the basement where he was storing canned vegetables, looking at the terrified faces of the adults and kids, and set back his shoulders.
"Vania." He said calmly. "Why don't you take your siblings to your room?" Vania, understanding the danger, would jump up, collect Gov, and both holding a twin in their arms as they made their way up the stairs. Gov would briefly turn and look down below at the adults; Kentucky would disappear back in the basement as Georgia snuffed the lights from the house and Pennsylvania watched from the window.
Before disappearing into Vania's room, Gov would spot Kentucky emerging from the basement again, this time holding something he had only seen when he took Vania hunting.
They weren't allowed to turn on the big lantern in Vania's room, but could light smaller candles to read with while their parents took care of whatever was happening. The babies would sleep soundly on the beds, undisturbed at what was going on, and Vania would read with Gov.
Sometimes to break the quiet, there was a loud noise outside akin to an explosion coming from outside.
Vania and Gov would just curl in tighter.
It was the biggest archaeological find of the year.
At an old abandoned Pennsylvania farmhouse, on the edge of Ohio, was a grave of bones, found by a pair of influencers who were going to flip the house for a TikTok series.
"The bones date back to the Civil War!" Washington told Gov one late afternoon as they watched the news. Gov just hummed and sipped his coffee, watching the news report as more archaeologists dug up more bones.
"There were fifteen bodies in all but some are saying there could be close to twenty!" An intern announced.
"I read that they're trying to figure out if there was a battle somewhere near the farmhouse and the union just used it as a burying pit." Another intern explained. Gov took a swig of his coffee and looked up at Washington and the interns.
"Hey. I think there's doughnuts in the staff room." Gov announced.
"The good ones?" Washington asked.
"Yep. Better grab some before DC gets a hold of them." Gov said with a laugh. The interns and Washington hurried out of the room, leaving Gov alone with the TV and his thoughts. Gov picked up his phone and casually dialed a number, leaning back in his chair.
"FBI? Yeah it's da-no you're not in trouble." Gov rolled his eyes. "You see the news report about the bones found at the old farm house?" He paused to let his son respond, taking a sip of his coffee.
"Make sure it's labeled as a burying pit for union soldiers would you? And seal off the rest of the area." Gov ordered. He smiled. "Thanks bud. See you Sunday." Gov hung up his phone and sat back, watching the news report with a new calm.
Gov loved helping his dads.
