Paradise Almost Lost
Inspired by Sunheart_101's last chapter
Also I wanted to add some implication that even back before they knew what it was, sometimes DC just didn't like to be touched unless asked
Kentucky leaned against the table, trying to control his breathing and calm down. Damn him, damn him for what he did. He did nothing as Sherman stormed through Atlanta, burning everything in sight and harming his Geo, potentially harming his children. Damn Ohio, he would never forgive him.
His thoughts were interrupted at the sound of muffled sniffling and Kentucky glanced up; DC and IDC were at the top of the stairs, both in various stages of crying. DC was crying into IDC's shoulder and IDC was holding her twin tight, crying so hard her tiny body shook. Kentucky sat up and turned to the twins.
"Babies?" Kentucky whispered.
"D-Did we do something bad?" IDC cried and Kentucky's heart broke.
"No...no Izzy no." Kentucky whispered, making his way upstairs. He bit his lip as IDC clutched her brother tighter, they were afraid of him. The one thing he promised he'd never do is make his children afraid of him like he was of his father, and they were. "I wasn't mad at you."
"Papa you yelled." IDC whimpered as Kentucky got to them and sat next to them.
"I know....I know I did." Kentucky whispered smoothing the braids elegantly done on her head. Georgia always did the best hair styles on their girl. "But I was never yelling at you, I'd never yell like that at you." IDC sniffed and let go of her brother, hugging Kentucky around the waist. Kentucky drew her in close and then looked at DC who was still sniffling. He looked scared, and unsure if Kentucky would start yelling so the border state adjusted himself and reached out for DC's hand. Slowly DC put his tiny hand in his, then finally letting himself relax, dove into his chest crying. Silently Kentucky held the twins as they cried, rocking them gently and occasionally whispering silent words of comfort to them.
He can't believe Ohio did this, he almost took away the three people who meant the world to him. All for what, winning a war that was already won? He was glad Ohio was out of the twins' lives now, then he couldn't teach them the only way to really destroy your enemy was to beat them down to ash.
Most of the south deserved it, not Georgia.
"Tell ya what." Kentucky whispered, finally making the twins glance up at him. "You know what daddy would really want right now?" The twins wiped their eyes and shook their heads.
"He'd want two of his best children to go pick him flowers." Kentucky announced. DC jumped up.
"The meadow?" DC asked squealing with delight as Kentucky swung him in the air.
"The meadow!" Kentucky announced kissing all over DC's face making him squeal and then grabbed IDC and planted a few wet kisses on her face as well. He put both twins down and patted their arms.
"Go get your coat on." Kentucky ordered with a smile. The twins dashed in front of them talking excitedly and Kentucky watched them go, a sad look on his face despite his smile. He came so close to losing this, losing his family that he built up all these years. He was never losing his family ever again.
