Bread and Love

A/N: The 1930s AU no one asked for

Georgia glanced up at the door opening and shutting and Kentucky coming in.

"How was it today?" Georgia whispered.

"No jobs." Kentucky muttered taking his jacket off. "I did earn ten dollars though."

"How?" Georgia asked. He looked down at Kentucky's left hand where the knuckles were all bruised and blood and gasped.

"Tucky you didn't--"

"Some guy offered me to fight some other guy and if I won I got ten buck! This'll keep the electric on!" Kentucky argued wincing as Georgia touched his hand.

"Baby you can't just....they're making a fool out of you!" Georgia pointed out.

"Hey. I'd rather be made a fool of then let my kids go hungry." Kentucky said hissing as Georgia cleaned up some of the blood. He peeked behind Georgia and looked at the hanging blanket separating the kitchen from the rest of the house.

"How are they?" Kentucky asked.

"Gov got in trouble at school today, some rich old woman wants to make IDC her companion, and DC's fever went down." Georgia explained dressing Kentucky's knuckles.

"Why'd Gov get in trouble?"

"Teacher wouldn't give him extra points for an answer she accidentally marked wrong." Georgia said with a small smile. Kentucky chuckle.

"Sounds like my boy." Kentucky whispered, kissing Georgia's forehead. After the southern man was done, Kentucky left him and went to the bedsheet, moving it aside to look at his small children all sleeping in their beds. Gov was stone-faced even as he slept, looking like he was concentrating hard on his dream. IDC had a pillow over her head while her twin next to her snuggled into an old stuffed rabbit he had ever since they found the three children in the gutter. Kentucky smiled and was about to draw back the bedsheet when a soft voice called out.

"Papa?" Kentucky turned around and DC was sitting up, staring at him.

"Cee, you need to sleep." Kentucky pointed out.

"Bad dream." DC whimpered and his big brown eyes filled with tears. Kentucky sighed and held out his arms, and the little boy crawled quickly over to him and fell into his arms. The southern man put his hand on DC's forehead and smiled.

"You feeling better baby?" Kentucky whispered. DC nodded and sniffed.

"What were you dreaming about that got you scared?" Kentucky asked. DC buried his face in Kentucky's shirt, and he held on tight. "C'mon, you can tell your old man." DC picked his head up and looked at his dad, with tears in his eyes.

"Papa are we going away?" DC asked. Kentucky looked at DC confused.

"What? No. No we're not...where'd you get that idea..."

"Daniel." Kentucky's head snapped up at his real name, and Georgia was staring intently at him from the stove.

"Mrs. Jared had to send her kids away to the country, they couldn't care for them anymore." Georgia explained. Kentucky's eyes went wide and he glanced back at DC who continued to sniffle. His eyes wandered again to that lone ten dollars on the table, that ten dollars that would only pay to keep the electricity on but wouldn't do anything for the credit at the grocery store, thinking about the last bottle of milk in the fridge Georgia kept desperately trying to mix with water to make it last. He thought of his two other kids; Gov who dreamed of being president, and IDC who dreamed of being an author.

"Cee. Cee listen to me." Kentucky ordered putting his son on his lap and making him stare him in the eyes. "I am not sending you kids away, you hear me?"

"Tucky--" Georgia said with a sigh but Kentucky cut him off quickly.

"I'd rather die a thousand deaths then lose you kids, you hear me? We'll be alright, your old mans got a plan." Kentucky said with a smile.

"You sure papa?" DC asked softly.

"You doubt me?" Kentucky teased before tickling DC, making him squeal with laughter. Even Georgia couldn't stop smiling as his husband tickled their son, before finally placing him back in bed.

"Night robin." Kentucky whispered.

"Night papa." DC said with a yawn. Kentucky smiled again watching his son fall asleep, before stepping back and letting the bed sheet fall.

"Tucky...we can't promise that." Georgia whispered.

"I'll go to two breadlines tomorrow and find us food." Kentucky announced ignoring his husband.

"We need to discuss that it could be a possibility--"

"I'll look in the papers, maybe I can find some temp work."

"DANIEL WRIGHT." Kentucky froze in his ramblings and stared at his husband.

"Kentucky you shouldn't have promised him that, we don't know if maybe we have to send them away." Georgia pointed out.

"No. Not after I made that promise." Kentucky announced.

"I know you want to keep the family together..."

"And I will." Kentucky hissed.

"But we're behind on our electric, our grocery store credit is through the roof, we haven't paid the milk man in months...."

"DAMN IT I JUST WANT TO PROVIDE FOR THIS FAMILY." Kentucky yelled sinking into one of the kitchen chairs, putting his head in his hands. Georgia quickly scurred over to Kentucky's side, drawing him into his arms.

"You're a good provider love." Georgia whispered.

"I feel like I failed." Kentucky whimpered.

"Your children love you, I love you. The only thing that's failed here is our government. We can make this through, we just got to get creative." Georgia pointed out making Kentucky look up at him. Kentucky leaned forward and kissed Georgia on the lips, the two softly making out before Georgia broke the kiss.

"And hey, if Gov is president someday, maybe our lives will get better." Georgia pointed out making Kentucky laugh.

"He scams the rich neighborhood kids out of their candy for his brother and sister, I'm pretty sure he'd make a great politician." Kentucky said.

"God where'd we go wrong?" Georgia teased as Kentucky kissed his cheek, the two sitting in comfortable silence with one another.
