Issues #40: Moving On

"Hey, (Y,N)? Are you in here? Oliver said he saw you go in here last night." Barbara said as she opened the door to the janitor's closet. I was sitting on the floor pinned up next to a bunch of chemicals.

"Who the hell is Oliver?" I asked.

"Oh, yeah, you don't know everyone's name yet. Oliver's the Green Arrow."

"The dork with the arrows?"

"How're you holding up?"

"What do you mean? What you think this thing with Frost phases me? Y'know, statistically speaking; relationships at my age almost never work out. High school relationships are bullshit. Even if I didn't meet her in high school and I dropped out two years ago and I should actually be in college right now and-"

"You keep calling her Frost." Barbara said. I raised an eyebrow as I got up.

"Yeah? What about it?"

"Well, haven't you been calling her Caitlin or Cait or Snowflake since you guys got out of the Suicide Squad?"

"Since before then actually but whatever." I said. "Look, if you're just gonna talk to me about Frost all day then I'm gonna go back to dozing off for a few minutes before a drop of water wakes me up. Seriously, we're on a freaking space station yet this is the best closet billionaire Bruce Wayne and millionaire Oliver Queen can afford? I'm sure you've got someone else rich and famous on this Flying heap, too."

"Actually, I thought that maybe we could go get you some more clothes. You seem to only have the one set and the trench coat and I don't think you'd want Kara to keep picking out your outfits after she made you wear a flash shirt. I'd pay of course, as a sorry for bringing you down to Gotham for the whole mess to start in the first place."

"... Well, let's get a move on then." I said walking out of the closet with my hands on my pocket.

"Do you do that every time you're mad?"

"One, who says I'm mad and two, do what?"

"Hastily walk away from the conversation that got you upset."

"I don't-

. . .

"Whatever. What's done is done. Let's just try to get out of here. We'll talk about it later, Frost." I said before shoving my hands in my pockets and speed walking away. I was down the hall before I realized Frost was still standing at the door.

. . .

"...I need a drink." I said.

"What're you? Me?" I heard a familiar voice say. I looked over and saw Canary leaning against a wall.

"Hey, so-"

"Don't worry about it. I know you were just doing it as a distraction for Livewire. Without it, she wouldn't be back in Arkham. It was a one time thing and it was for the mission, nothing more, nothing less." I felt myself loosen up a little in relief.

"Well at least someone else gets it." I said.

"So I'm gonna be heading out for a while. Gotta deal with a thing involving Damien Dhark."

"Who?"

"Exactly. By the time I'll be back you'll be gone. Meanwhile, I'm gonna have to deal with icy glares for god knows how long."

"Yikes. Good luck with that. I've never been on the receiving end of one of those so I couldn't tell you what they're like." I said scratching the back of my head.

"So, I guess this is goodbye for now. So, cya."

"Yeah, later." I said.

"And one more thing before you go." Canary said before handing me a piece of paper. "Just in case you ever wanna catch up."

"You couldn't even wait a full day after ruining my first long term relationship before giving me your phone number?" I joked.

"I'm not gonna miss how annoying you are. To be honest I don't know exactly what I'm going to miss."

"I'm not gonna miss you kicking my ass every day, that's for sure." I said. "Later, Canary." I began to walk away with Barbara.

"Dinah."

"Huh?" I said looking back over at her.

"You wanted to know my name last night. It's Dinah. Dinah Laurel Lance."

"Huh... neat." I said before beginning to walk away. "Later, Laurie."

"Don't call me Laurie!" Dinah shouted from the other side of the room.

. . .

"You told him Kori is a guy's name?"

"Because it is!" I said looking through a bunch of shirts. "The chick knew the English language the first time she kissed him and she couldn't have come up with a nicer name like Terra, or Stacy, or Barbara?"

"Ugh, (Y,N) stop." Barbara said giggling.

"Yeah, I take it back. Barbara is an old librarians name." Barbara punched me in the shoulder making me hold it in pain. "Ow! Hey! Still shocked to shit over here!"

"Sorry, but you deserved it. Barbara was my mom's name, you know."

"She a cop, too?"

"No."

"She a psycho Gotham gang leader?"

"Why would you think that!?"

"Listen, I've got a soft spot for opposites attracting. Best cop on the force makes whoopee with a killer drug dealer just makes sense."

"Never say make whoopee again." Barbara said. "And you think my dad is the best cop on the force?"

"Oh yeah, big time. You forget I was a big time assassin. Not just villains and politicians, I took out crooked cops, too. I read all of their files. The only one of them that I had nothing but respect for was James Gordon. Place was a shithole before he got there. Also have a soft spot for Montoya. Upset I never got to kill Flass. That's why if I met Sofia Falcone I'd think twice before shooting her. Too bad Two-Face beat me to it." I said. "Hey, what do you think about this one?" I asked Barbara holding up a shirt that said "Live Fast Die Young".

"I think that shirt is a sensitive subject for our line of work."

"Oh come on, it's just a shirt."

"Yeah but considering we have the most dangerous job in the planet? I'd still prefer if you didn't get it." Barbara said.

"Fine, you pick something instead."

"I was hoping you'd say that." Barbara quickly grabbed a bunch of different shirts. All black. A shirt with the Bat Symbol on it, one with a skeleton graffitiing the side of a building, A Gotham Knights, a shirt with some guy with spikey hair and a leather jacket holding a guitar I thought looked pretty cool, and a shirt that said "I Hate Everyone".

"Why're they all black?"

"This is just the start."

"The start? How much stuff are you gonna buy?"

"Don't look a gift horse in the mouth."

"What the hell does that even mean?"

"It means shut up and be thankful." Babs said ruffling up my hair. "Hold on. I'll go find some more stuff." She added before walking away. I looked over at the tv and saw the trippiest thing. Me. On TV.

"Police are still not sure if they can call (H/N) a friend or foe. Although taking out Livewire with the help from Black Canary, the mysterious assassin who made his first appearance in the public eye in a year had also shot known vigilante Nightwing multiple times as well as gained assistance from Central City meta human supervillain: Killer Frost." Oh. That's right. I'm supposed to be depressed right now.

...What the hell am I gonna do when I get back?
