Thank You (Jaime & Milagro)
"Millie!"
The Hispanic turned around, scowling. They didn't particularly like the nickname, no matter the mood they were in.
"How many times do I have to tell you-"
They stopped talking when they saw what Jaime was holding.
"What is that?"
"Oh, nothing."
It was a fancy looking black box, they type someone would keep jewelry in.
"It doesn't look like nothing."
"Well, it is."
He shifted slightly.
"So... is it one of those days?"
They smiled. Jaime hadn't been the most supportive in the beginning, slight phobia and all that, but he was coming around. He referred to any day they weren't a girl as 'one of those days', but he was trying all the same. He'd even arranged this meeting in a park near the Tower so they could see each other.
"Yeah."
"Oh. What kind of day?"
"It's a 'they' day Jaime. I even wore gray to help you out."
They tried matching their clothes to their gender, reds and pinks on she's, blues and greens on he's, grays on they's, but it hadn't helped too much, especially considering they weren't consistent with the code.
"I saw, I was just checking. So, how's the brat?"
He also didn't approve of their choice in significant other, no matter how many times Milagro had told him it wasn't a sexual relationship. He was overprotective if nothing else.
"Robin is good, he's really adjusting well to team life."
Milagro lives with Colin, Irey, Lian, Damian, and Jai in Titian Tower. They'd all been avoiding their family members recently because of a slight falling out. Just a little Teen Titans vs the Justice League and Young Justice scuffle that resulted in the six of them not being recognized as official heroes. To be fair, Superman was very out of line.
"That's good."
He shifted again. He was clearly uncomfortable, he and Milagro weren't on the best of terms ever since they blasted him into space for battling with the Shazamily (their affectionate nickname for the Shazam family), but he still loved them and didn't want to have such a rift between them. Technically no heroes were supposed to acknowledge the Titans anymore (rules that the Shazamily, the Outlaws, and the Batfam violate on a regular basis), so it was very hard to get contact with each other anymore.
"Has he been treating you well?"
"The definition of a true gentleman. A little too textbook for my tastes, but that will fade when he stops trying to win dads approval."
Jaime smiled.
"Does he know that it's mom he really needs to watch out for?"
"No. I've told him, but he was brought up in a very sexist environment. He still tries to get Lian and Irey to stay behind sometimes you know."
"Not you?"
"After I saved his life on Elpis? No way."
Jaime cringed. He never wanted Milagro to get mixed up in the hero life, but here they were, in some ways they are deeper in it than he is.
"Jaime."
He looked back up at them.
"Being a Lantern is the best thing that's ever happened to me. It's how I met Rob, my friends, it's my life. Can't you support me in this, if nothing else?"
"I support your decision!"
"Blue Lanterns don't get in as many fights as the others."
"Yo se."
"Sometimes I doubt that."
"It's a known fact, Mil. But less doesn't mean none, and I worry-"
"¡Míos Dio! You worry, mamá y papá worry, Rob worries, everyone worries Jaime. Stop waiting for me to break, I can handle it."
"You've proven that, I don't doubt your capabilities, but some things are beyond control."
"Isn't that what Young Justice used to say about me? That I was beyond control and the Lanterns should just train me because they sure as hell couldn't?"
"Aye, por favor. No one hated you Mil."
"Chaotic neutral."
"Red Robin is a nerd, he gives everyone moral alignments Millie."
"I don't like Millie."
"Sorry, Mil."
"I know he does, but he doesn't give everyone a bad alignment."
"Chaotic neutral isn't bad. I've spent some time playing DnD-"
Milagro laughed.
"Because of him and you know it! But what I'm trying to say is, chaotic neutral isn't bad."
"He kept trying to make me a rogue."
"Still not necessarily bad!"
"My character killed people all the time."
"Don't you choose that part?"
"He kept forcing me into it!"
"No one hates you Mil, not even him if you can believe it."
"Supes hates me."
"He's hated everyone at one point or another, ese thinks he's the pinnacle of morality."
"I guess."
"You can come home if you want."
"What? To Young Justice? No thanks."
"No, to El Paso. Mom and dad miss you, so do I, and.."
He thought about how to proceed. He didn't want them to feel pressured, but then, it was urgent.
"El Paso is a mess right now Mil. There's a Red Lantern hanging out for some reason, a magic stick, Tracy, aliens keep showing up to find Khaji-"
He closed his eyes, mouth twitching. Milagro had been around him enough to know he was talking to the scarab.
"Okay, okay, Khaji Da. He wants me to use his full name, can you believe? Anyways, I think it's only a matter of time before our home turns into a sci-fi version of No Mans Land, and we all saw how that worked out. You thought Gotham was bad before the earthquakes, whew."
They thought for a second. Could their home really have become such a wreck? It wasn't too hard to believe. And Jaime was asking for their help in a superheroey kind of way, which was a huge step forward.
"I'll have to talk to the other Titans, so maybe. We were thinking about starting a Titans South though. We have to get Titans in more areas now that the League has abandoned us."
He nodded.
"Okay, yeah, thanks."
They shifted awkwardly.
"Was that all you wanted?"
"Hm? Oh, no."
He held the box out to them.
"Now is a good time to give this to you, I guess."
They took it, a little afraid it would be knockout gas or something that the League had sent to hold kidnap them and hold them for ransom, or something like that. But when they opened it, they saw beautiful he/her/they chokers. They began to feel themself tear up.
"Jaime..."
"Look, I know I wasn't the most accepting in the beginning, and that was wrong of me. Even now I feel myself defaulting to 'her' and 'she' and 'ella' when I see you. But I'm trying Mil, with the gender thing, your asshole boyfriend, the superhero thing, all of it. I'm really sorry that I kept trying to force you to be who I thought you'd be, instead of letting you be who you are. I'm also sorry for beating your friends up. Could you ever forgive me, or we could just start over altogether if that's what you'd prefer."
He looked at her with pleading eyes, but he really didn't need to give the whole speech, because his gift had said it all. They looked up at him with tears flowing freely, then leapt into his arms. The two of them hadn't hugged for so long, it almost felt like the first time.
"Thank you."
"De nada. Lo siento para tratando de hacerte más estadounidense también."
"No problema."
So I did use Translate for the long sentence, but the rest of the Spanish came from my brain, so if there are any mistakes please correct them. Also, yes, Milagro is gender fluid and I added a bunch of barely canon characters into this one shot, what are you going to do about it?
