CHAPTER FIVE — dig dug

Steve picks me up and we go get Delilah, the three of us planning on seeing a movie and then getting a bite to eat. I'm mentally mapping out a time table for my night following the activities with my friends, realizing that I have History homework and Nancy still has my notes because she wasn't at school yesterday. "Shit. Hey, while we're still around here, can we stop at the Wheeler's?" I ask, turning to the boy next to me.

    "Sure, why?"

"Nancy has my notes and I need them to do my homework tonight." I explain.

"Why are you thinking about homework?" Lila asks.

"Because if I'm gonna enjoy my day, I need to plan out the end of my night, so I can get my work done." I state. "Also, Lils, I need to ask you something and don't bullshit me. What are the boys hiding from Max?"

"What the hell are you talking about?" She questions, leaning forward.

"Apparently the boys are excluding Max from certain conversations for her own protection. I said that I'd ask you about it. Something about someone named El. I don't know all the details, but they hurt her feelings, which is difficult to do."

    "They told her about El?"

"Delilah." Steve warns, the two share a look and now I'm the one who feels excluded.

"Who's El? And what are they supposedly protecting her from?" I inquire, my gaze shifting between the two. They stay quiet. "Come on you guys. I'm not just gonna let this go. Just tell me." Steve pulls over on the side of the road and makes sure all of the windows are rolled up, before turning his body to face me.

"We legally cannot. But I don't see the point in hiding it from you." He states. "She's gonna find out eventually. Those kids are gonna cave and one of them will tell Max. It's better if we tell her now." His last statement directed at Delilah, who agrees with him.

"Brace yourself. This is gonna sound crazy." Lila says. The two begin to explain how Will didn't just go missing last year. He was trapped in an alternate dimension that they called the Upside Down. This girl Barb was taken and killed by something called a Demogorgon. And how El is really a girl that came from Hawkins Lab and had telekinetic powers. The guys from the lab had constantly searched for her, while she was hold up in the Wheelers basement with the guys. My friends finished their story off with how they, along with Nancy and Jonathan, fought the Demogorgon in the Byers home, before El vanquished it back to the Upside Down. And how the feds are watching them and making them keep quiet. They had a bunch of other details in there as well, but summed it up as much as possible. "We know it's completely nuts and wouldn't be surprised if you don't believe us."

    "You're right. It's nuts. But I think I believe you." I breathe.

    "Really?"

"Yeah. It's too crazy to make up. You don't just pull a story like that out of thin air. So, El is a lab experiment who basically has super powers...that's cool." I speak. I turn forward in my seat. "Well, come on. You've gotta start driving again Harrington, otherwise we're gonna miss the previews." He starts the car and pulls back onto the road, we don't drive for too long before we're outside the Wheeler residence. "I'll be quick." I exit the car and start to make my way towards the house, seeing a kid walking in my direction.

"You here to see Mr or Mrs Wheeler?" He asks and I shake my head no. He maneuvers to look at the car behind me and I'm assuming he recognizes it. "Good. I'm Dustin." He grabs my wrist and drags me back over to the vehicle.

"Okay, I'm Samira. Why the hell are you dragging me over here?"

    "Nancy isn't home." He informs.

    "Uh, where is she?"

"Doesn't matter." Dustin states. His hand bangs on the hood of the car, this causes the other two teens to exit. "We have bigger issues to deal with than your girly problems." I'm slightly taken aback by his assumption, but shake it off with a laugh. His attention turns to Steve. "Do you still have that bat?"

    "Bat? What bat?"

"The one with the nails." I make my way back to the passenger side and open the door, listening to the boys go back and forth.

    "Why?"

"I'll explain on the way." Dustin opens the back door.

    "Now?"

"Now!" The four of us are in the car, making our way back to the Henderson residence. Dustin explains how he thought he made a scientific discovery, which turned out to be a small version of the Demogorgon. He calls it a DemoDog.

lexi's letters; this is officially the shortest chapter i've ever written of any book. but the last set of chapters will be much longer and way more fun to write.
