THREE, day in the life

ELENA drove with her niece and nephew to the hardware store, Max in his flashy Honda behind them (which made Elena's old Civic look pathetic.).

They parked up, and Max went in to get the parts he needed. Before they had left, he took a quick look at her car, and assessed what he needed.

Whilst he was in the store, Elena turned to her niece and nephew. "How do you like Max?"

Junior piped up from behind, "He's cool! The next world champion!"

Elena chuckled at Junior's enthusiasm. "What about you Carlota?"

"He talks funny." she said, slightly bemused.

"He's from the Netherlands. He's got a different accent to us." she informed her niece. "But apart from that?"

"He's cool." she said smiling up at her Aunt.

"Good, 'cause your Dad's now best buddies with him, so you're gonna' have to put up with him." she joked.

The reactions from the two kids couldn't have been more different. Junior looked amazed and excited, where as Carlota scrunched up her face. "All the time?" she whined.

Elena had to refrain herself from laughing as Max knocked on the window. She rolled it down and looked up at him. "Got everything?"

He nodded and lifted his hand, shaking her the parts. "You're gonna' have to get the kids out of the car whilst I do this. It's might be difficult."

Elena opened the door, getting out of the car and walking towards the back door. "Thought you said it was an easy fix?" she teased.

Max gave her a sarcastic smile. "Not with two whiny kids in the back.

"We aren't whiny!" Chorused the siblings as Elena opened the door.

Elena laughed, earning herself a glare from the dutchman. She turned back to the kids. "Okay, out you get. Max has got to do the work."

MUCH to her dismay, it was an easy fix for him to make. Part of Elena was happy that her problem was fixed, the other part of her wanted to slap the smug look right of Max's face.

"Stupid egotistical driver." she thought to herself, as Max emerged from the car, a smirk on his face. "Well, I believe I fixed that in what, half an hour?" she said, asking her for confirmation.

"It was 35 minutes actually so..." she said, giving him a sarcastic smile.

She was leaning against his car, the kids sat in the back with the door next to Elena open. Max walked over to her, and reached around her to open the passenger side door. His arm brushed against her's as he placed the tools on the passenger seat.

When he stood back up straight, they made eye contact for a few moments, before Carlota perked up from the back seats. "Can we go to the play centre now if Max fixed the car?"

Elena turned to the two kids, gesturing for them to get back into her car. "Yeah come on." she said, Junior and Carlota jumped out of the car, walking over to Elena's Civic.

El turned back to Max, "Follow me along the road. The centre isn't too far from here."

He nodded and got in his car, doing as Elena said, and following her down the road, towards the large kid's play centre.

When he parked up next to Elena and got out of the car, he could see the expressions on both the kid's faces, and smiled to himself.

Elena ushered them both in to the centre, signing them in, before they walked into the large, warehouse type structure, with lots of different play areas.

Elena spotted an empty table near to where they were stood, and told Carlota and Junior that was where they could find them, before the kids sprinted off, into the mass of children.

Elena and Max walked over to the table, and sat down. They had a perfect view of the play areas, so they could keep an eye on the kids.

Elena shrink down into her chair as soon as she sat down. Max laughed at her. "Come on, you can't be tired. I was the one who did work today."

Elena gave him a skeptical look. "Excuse me, but unless you would like the kids in your car on the way back then I suggest you keep your mouth shut Verstappen." she teased.

Max held his hands up in mock surrender. They both laughed at each other, before Elena's phone rang. She rolled her eyes and muttered something before she answered it. "Hola. Sí, habla ella."

Max watched as she conversed in Spanish to whoever was on the phone, and saw her face lit up with excitement. He mouthed "what" at her and she waved her hand frantically, meaning that she'd tell him in a moment.

After she'd finished the call, her smile was as wide as Max had seen it. He smiled at her reaction, "What's up?"

"I just got a job booked in for next week with Giorgio Armani, Charles is gonna' be there. I have to model with him." she said grinning.

Max's expression fell slightly. "Oh, that's great."

Elena gave him a confused look. "Okay what is up with you? I know you two have got karting history but ever time Charles had been mentioned you go flat. What, you hold grudges for ten years?"

Max let out a sarcastic laugh. "No I don't hold grudges for that long. Anymore." he added, in a sheepish voice.

Elena gave him a "see?" look, before he continued. "It's just-" he hesitated slightly, "Look I've known him for a while, and he's a bit of a playboy. And when I saw a bit I mean if he's with someone and see's another pretty girl, 99 percent of the time he'll dump the girl he's with and go after the other one."

Elena raised her eyebrows at him, a teasing expression on her face. "So you're worried about me?"

"Y'know what never mind." he said dismissively, looking towards the play area to try and spot Junior or Carlota.

"You're worried Charles is gonna' screw me over." Elena said, not taking anything he said seriously. "Well, I can debunk your theory because he isn't seeing anyone, and hasn't been in months. Therefore, your little assessment is flawed."

Max shrugged. "Alright. Just let me be there if he does so I can say 'I told you so'." he said, giving her a sarcastic smile, which she returned.

Suddenly, Junior and Carlota came running over to them, Junior holding his elbow. Elena sat up in her chair as the two reached the table, "Hey what's wrong?" she asked the two.

"Sergio hit is elbow." Carlota said, looking at her brother in concern.

Elena looked to her nephew, "Are you okay? Does it hurt?"

Junior shrugged. "I don't know. It did earlier but it doesn't anymore. But I don't know if that's because I haven't moved it."

Max got up from his chair and crouched down beside Junior. He took a hold of his elbow carefully, and moved it gently. "Does this hurt?"

Junior shook his head.

Max moved his arm again, "This?"

There was another shake of the boy's head, and Max smiled. "It's okay, it probably hurt because you banged it, but it seems to be okay."

Junior smiled widely. "Thanks."

Max sat back down, but instead in the chair next to Elena's. Carlota began to pull on her brother's shirt, indicating she wanted to go back into the play area. Elena ruffled their hair, "Be careful okay?" she said.

The two siblings nodded, promising they would be careful, before they went back off into the play area.

Elena sighed slightly. "Kids." she muttered.

A woman to their right turned around to face the pair. "Don't worry, he'll be okay. When they do it once usually they remember not to do it again."

Elena smiled at her. "Thanks."

She smiled back, but examined the pair. "I'm sorry I just can't get over how young you both are. How old is your little boy? I'm assuming he's the oldest?"

Elena went to explain to the woman how they were her brother's children, before Max answered for her. "He's five. We look young for our age, don't worry, we get it a lot."

He placed his arm around Elena, who could do nothing but sit and smile at the woman, whilst silently contemplating whether to murder Max right there, or when they got back to her house.

"Oh, I must ask for your skin routine." she joked.

"Yeah." Elena said, letting out a small nervous chuckle.

The woman's daughter approached the table, rubbing her eyes with her hands, complaining that she was tired. The lady gathered up her things, taking a hold of her daughter's hand. "Well it was nice talking to you." she said, waving them goodbye as she and her daughter left.

Elena and Max waved them goodbye, and as soon as she was out of earshot, Elena dropped her smile, glaring at Max. "You're not funny."

"Oh come on. That was a little funny." Max said, giving Elena a look. "Come on," he said pulling her into him with his arm, "You found it funny Perez."

But Elena refused to smile. "Nope. Not funny at all."

"Why haven't you pushed my arm away then?" she asked her, smirking slightly.

Elena opened her mouth the answer him, but nothing came out. Instead she shrugged off his arm, pursing her lips, and Max laughed to himself. "Shut up." Elena scolded, him, but letting slip her own laugh.

Max looked at her as she stared off into the distance, and noticed that she had a stand of hair falling in front of her face.  He slowly reached out, tucking it behind her ear, causing her to turn back to him.

Max gave her a smile, which she returned. Elena sat back down in her chair properly, as she spotted Junior and Carlota chasing after each other, laughing.

She felt Max place his arm on the back of her chair, and this time didn't move it.

They stayed like that until Junior and Carlota returned to the table, a tired look, similar to the woman's daughter had, and the four of them left, driving back to Elena's apartment.
