chapter 3

"Do you love Arthur?"

I stop breathing, suddenly feeling very vulnerable. I try to cover my scared expression with one of confidence.

"What! No! Wh- why why would you say that?" I stutter trying to feign innocence. Gaius sees straight through my facade and embraces me.

"This does not change you Merlin. I love you like a son. That will never change." I can't help the tears falling down my cheeks. I let out a shudderey breath gripping Gaius as I wept. He whispered soothing words to help me calm down.

Despite the thrumming of magic against my skin, I somehow allow myself to relax. The tears begin to slow and my breathing returns to normal. I pull back from the hug and smile at my mentor.

"Thank you Gaius." I say with such sincerity.

"Don't mention it my boy. Now I think we should get you to Arthur. I feel we have found our cure." I stare blankly at him for a few moments, utterly confused by what he means.

Then it dawns on me.

"I can't kiss Arthur! He doesn't love me." Gaius raises his eyebrow at me, as if challenging my statement. "Does he?"

Gaius gives a short laugh. "Honestly the two of you are so oblivious. Have you seen the way he looks at you Merlin. He adores you." I blush at that statement, not quite believing it.

There's no way a King could love a lowly, idiotic serving boy like me. Right?

"Gaius I think you are mistaken. He couldn't possibly love me!"

"There is only one way to find out."

"Well what if another loves him. What if my kiss worsens his condition. I can't risk that."

"Merlin!" His tone sends shivers down my spine. I stop in my tracks and look at the floor.

"Merlin, anyone can see how much he loves you. Trust me."

I nod my head, eyes still fixed on the floor. I feel a slight pat on my shoulder then the door clicks shut. I am alone again.

---

"Gaius, your back. The Princess still hasn't improved." I stifle a chuckle at Gwaine's tone. Of course he would be making jokes at a time like this.

I am currently hiding behind a pillar outside Arthur's chambers, listening intently to Gaius.

"I have found a cure. I am going to ask you all to leave as the process is very difficult, requiring the upmost concentration." I smirk at his ability to lie effortlessly. He wonders where I get it from!

A chorus of mumbles come from the Knights as the file out the room. Once gone I slip into the chambers, met with Gaius's smirking face.

"I will leave you alone, Merlin." I give him a nod as he leaves the room. I take a deep breath and walk over to Arthur's side.

Yep another cliff hanger! Sorry not sorry

Gaius being an accepting dad gives me life!
