~ Hazel's POV ~

Freedom washes through me. I cannot believe I am finally free. Do not get me wrong, I love Emma and Gus, but I have wanted this feeling since... forever. Silence slaps me hard across the face, as a couple of stressful hours past after taking wrong turns and driving like an old lady and getting honked at several times. Before reaching the university, I stop by a couple stores to pick up supplies and get lost during my journey.
The car tyres screech on the road through the copper university gates as I cut the engine, stationed nearby a crowding parking-lot area provided for students. The college building structure has a 19th century, elegant copper design with endless vines intertwined and surrounding nature, drawing one into its beauty.
I leap out of the car, as I sling my brown, leather backpack over my shoulder and carry a university pamphlet within my sweaty palm. I lock the car and wander towards the foyer to collect the dorm key and check-in, but to my disappointment, the front premises is flooding with college people. Students must have arrived earlier than the break of dawn, hence the never-ending lineup in front of me. Puffing out a defeated sigh, I shuffle towards the back of the line.
* * *
I reach the front desk after what feels like hours standing out in the hot, Florida heat. I approach the office lady and stutter my speech, frighten at sight of her, "Hi umm... I was wondering if I uh... If I could have a key for, Hazel Anne Summers, please?" This woman before me appears to be Fiona's doppelganger. Fiona haunts me everywhere I go. I will never be free of the grasp she has over me. And I might be socially awkward but I am here to make friends, not with administration middle-aged woman, but if this is the best that I can do then so be it.
"Yes, certainly. So, for Hazel Anne Summers. Is that correct?" the women repeats.
I nod, appearing sweaty, "Uh... yeah. That's correct, but Anne with an 'e'."
"Funny, we have a teacher who's name is Anne with an 'e' too. How bazaar," the admin lady said with a shake of her head, "Anyway, Hazel Anne with an 'e' Summers. Thank you, for choosing University of Seaside Florida, State College to further your education. Now Hazel, I see that you're a week early, which is great. May I suggest you view the campus this coming week and study for your syllabuses. Now please, make your way towards the elevator level C and dromedary number 124," the desk lady replies, sure of herself, "And here is your key card. We upgraded to cards instead of keys for various reasons."
"Uh... okay, thanks," I mutter, half backing away, key card gripping tight within the small of my freehand. I shake the image of Fiona forming throughout my never-ending mind, who destroys my happiness. I guide myself towards the elevator, level C as the admin lady directed. I scramble out of the stuffy elevator and enter a crowd-less hallway as I search for the dorm room.
* * *
Okay, scratch that thought... I, Hazel Anne Summers, is sleeping in the hallways because I have a horrible sense of direction. I found myself on a detour for about an hour and a half walking back and forth, so I decide to ask for directions. I come across a common room full of people in deep conversation.
"Hi, umm... do you know wher–?" I ask a stranger in a small voice, as they ignore me. Honestly, I am not surprised...
"Excuse me, can you tell me wher–?" Wow. How rude!
"Okay, look. I'm lost and I need help findin–?" Are you kidding me!
Irritated, I stare at the floor in spite of my sudden inner anger. Do I smell or is there something on my face? I am short, so no one really notices me all the way down here.
Okay, Hazel. You really need a social life!
I sigh, leaning against a brick wall in a clustered, commercial lounge room. Of course, no one wants to help the socially awkward, midget. I laugh to myself because it is true.
I must have laughed aloud because a few eyes travel towards my direction. Shoot. My face burns like I have just eaten a hot, chilly pepper for the first time. Like that one time, when the evil twins put one into my food as a prank. It did not end well. That is all I can speak about that embarrassing moment of my life. I laugh again and about to leave the prying eyes staring, then a voice speaks, causing me to lose focus off the floor.
"Yo, shortie, what's so funny?" a guy questions.
"You look like a lost, little kitten!" another dude said.
"If you're lost, I can take you back to my dorm if you want?" another hormonal male mouths with a wink.
Yeah, in your dreams buddy...
That is it! I am about to speak, but then I think better of it. This is my first day here and I am already getting messed around with. Instead, I march out of the heated room and into the empty corridor.
God, I actually hate males and their inconsiderate comments and their disgusting desired fantasies.
A female's voice mutters behind me, but I continue my journey through the corridor. "Quit it, you guys. How about you do me a solid and shut the hell up, will you!"
Footsteps approach from behind, and I spin around to suss out the commotion. "Hey, wait up," a swagger girl calls, "Don't mind them, those guys find it amusing teasing all the freshman girls," she explains pointing back towards the hormonal males.
The girl comes across as laid back with short chestnut hair; cut to her shoulders, hazelnut brown, almond shape eyes, and thick black eyebrows framing her face. She wears wide frame, pair of glasses making her appear swagger. She is tall and has a cool style complexion about her with a few meaningful tattoos on her forearms.
A realization hit me, "Oh right, I see."
"I'm Honey, by the way," Honey introduces herself, waving.
"So, what's the new girl's name?" Honey questions.
I mutter like a dork, "Uh... I'm Hazel Anne with an 'e' Summers and I'm new, but you already knew that. I'm actually lost and I can't find my dorm room."
"Well, don't worry, I can help. Because I'm this year's Sophomore, Resident Advisor," Honey announces as her voice echoes throughout the corridors.
"Yes, we know Honey! How many times are you gonna tell everyone that?" a sarcastic male voice sounds within the commercial room.
"As many times as I want, dickhead!" Honey fires back and rolls her eyes. She shakes her head and releases a weighing sigh under her breath. "Assholes. Anyway, what's your dormitory level and number?"
I think for a brief moment, "Uh... Level C and number 124."
"Okay well, we're already on level C, which is a great start and number 124 is on the opposite wing."
I express laughing to myself, dumbfounded, "There's another wing? Wow, now I really feel stupid."
"No, not your fault. It happens to the best of us, anyway, that's what I'm here for," Honey reassures, "I got lost as a Freshman during my first week here. So, you're definitely not alone."
I smile at her efforts of comforting me, "Thank you and appreciate you helping me."
"Not a problem. Okay, follow me," Honey points towards the direction of the dorm room. We stroll through the corridors, halting near the last room at the end of the hall. "Here we are. Room 124, right?
We halt in front of a wooden door as I nod, "Yeah, that's what the lady told me." The dormitory door before me reveals fading, imprinted numbers carved into the thick wood.

Well... they say it is now or never, right?
Fiddling with the key card and doorknob, with a creek of the stained white, wood door light splurges through the doorway. Hence, revealing a bright smallish, but yet, spacious dormitory with stained white and oak, wood furniture throughout the interior. On one side of the room there is a brick wall and on the other, a white plaster wall. There are two floor to ceiling, barricaded cupboards on either sides of the entrance and two single top bunk beds and a ocean view, far off-centred window. Below both of the lofted beds, there is a smaller cupboard and a study desk with draws. The dorm room feels homey in a way I cannot describe into words.
I thank Honey for her help as she offers to help me unpack, organize, and clean the dormitory. Both Honey and I, unload the car and stack the room brim to brim with my luggage. Time flies by, and before we knew it, Honey and I re-organize and re-decorate the dorm room.
"So, do you know who's going to be your roommate, yet?" Honey questions, breaking the silence and unboxing the last few boxes placed on the planked, wood floor.
Thinking to myself, fiddling with the ham of my t-shirt as I ponder, "Uh... I have no idea. How about you?"
"Well, I'm sure they'll be cool. I'm actually in a single room, but I have loud neighbors that won't shut up and college hasn't even started, yet. I'm dreading this year already," Honey sighs to herself.
Examining my half untied shoelaces, as I fix the loose laces, "That sucks, well if they get too loud and if I don't get a roommate you can always bunk with me. There's more than enough room for the both of us."
"Thanks, dude. I might take you up on that offer sooner rather than later." Honey finishes unboxing my books and journals and placing them onto the empty bookshelf underneath the bay window. "Hey, I don't want to pry or anything, but I noticed your bandaid hands and I'm curious... you okay?"
I hide my hands behind my back, covering the scene as I tell a white lie. "It's nothing really, it happens all the time. I'm just clumsy, you see." To my relief, Honey notices my discomfort and drops the topic.
Meanwhile, I choose the right side of the room with the brick wall and begin decorating. I make the bed with white and baby blue sheets, fluffy baby pink pillows, and a pastel grey blanket at the end of the bed. I stick some plastic hooks on the bricks and hang warm tone fairy lights and leave vines hanging above the bed. To finish the look off, I place Teddy amongst the fluffy pillows and place a white fluffy rug in the center of the wooden floorboards.
Later that afternoon, I re-parked my car into a suitable parking lot. I slam the door shut and lock the car as I amble my way towards Honey. Honey waits on her phone, leaning on the entrance wall of the stone building. "Hey, you hungry? I'm starved," Honey said, stuffing her phone into the pocket of her jeans shorts. Just as she asked, my stomach grumbles loud and clear out of hunger. I guess I might as well, as it seems I have not eaten since this morning.
Honey and I make the most out of our stroll, showing me around the enormous 19th century's campus. I have already been on a tour at orientation last year, but that was last year and I have a bad memory when comes to directions. We come across the dining hall and I almost drool all over myself of how much food there is.
When I applied for university I chose the largest food plan, because who knows when one will be needing comfort food or when one is on her time of the month. I order some pumpkin and chicken soup and lots of water bottles since I already drunk all of the water I brought with me.
"So Hazel, how are you liking college so far?" Honey questions, mouth full of fries.
I ponder for a moment, "Uh... eventful actually, but without your help, I would've been doomed."
"Ha–ha... well, it's my job to help. But anyway, we should totally hang out more cause your pretty chill," Honey sends me a smile, "So, if your keen, you should totally be my plus one at the bonfire this coming Friday? It's at the beach, like a couple of minutes away. Anyway, think about it, and get back to me on this number." Honey's Phone screen illuminates digits, as I get my phone out of the back pocket of my skinny jeans and type the number into my phone. "I've got to run, but it was nice meeting you. See you around."
Stunned, I try to make out of what just happened. "Uh... okay, bye. See you." Did I just make a friend?
So I have a nightmare, almost crash the car, get lost, almost sweat to death under the boiling sun, get lost again, get teased and make a friend all during my first day of university. Eventful indeed.
