Day One (2)

The sun scorched the ground beneath their feet, baking the crust hard enough for it to crack into both large and tiny pieces.

Danny gulped at her saliva, craving the delicacy of fresh water down her dry throat. However, there is no sign of water anywhere and it was a known fact that they were far from civilisation.

"Good thinking, Danica. Now we're heading to gosh-knows-where with nothing but clothes on our backs. No food. No water. Nothing! We're going to die here with out anyone knowing! Who's going to tell my mum of my death?" Changbin shouted in frustration.

"We're not going to die, Changbin. Just have a little faith," Dan scoffed at his sudden change of attitude.

"Faith? How can I possibly have faith? Take a good look around us! We're in the middle of nowhere!"

"The further we walk, the closer we get to at least some kind of civilisation."

"Ever occurred to you that we're not the only ones living in a campsite? The disease filled the town and I'm pretty sure the same happened to not just the rest of the country but the rest if the world."

"I refuse and will continue to refuse that seven-point-four billion people are living in campsites."

"Your stubbornness isn't going to get you anywhere in life and you're an idiot if you think there are still seven-point-four billion people in the world." Danica rolled her eyes at him.

"If you want to head back to the campsites and have a zero-percent-chance of surviving then fine with me. Leave. I'll continue marching forward until I find a place to stay for the rest of my life!"

"You're never going to get there."

"I WILL!" Danica shouted before taking a deep breath to ease herself. "My mother told me if I continue thinking positively, I'll reach my goal."

"And I bet she was thinking positively about Carsania?" Immediately, Dan froze, fuming with rage as she held back the urge to punch his face. Changbin noticed this and smirked to himself before resuming. "What? Did I say too much-"

"Stop, Changbin," Chris' stern voice cut him off. The duo turned around to face the boy who glared at his friend. Neither of them had ever seen him so angry. Changbin averted his gaze from Chris to the horizon, awkwardly.

"Sorry, Dan. I was being insensitive and hadn't considered how much you missed your mum," he mumbled the apology out of pure regret and embarrassment. Changbin, too, at lost a parent to the disease but never felt the agony of losing both. It was clear to both boys that Danica suffered the most having seen both of her parents slowly lose themselves until they even tried to consume their own daughter. Danny watched everything, not because she was curious but because she wanted to be there during their last days. She was also the one who buried the both of them, wanting to be the last person to see them.

"It's okay," she uttered quietly before continuing to walk forward. Chris swiftly caught up to Changbin, grabbing him by his collar. The latter coward at his friend's glare on him.

"You went too far," Chris told him through gritted teeth. Changbin kept his gaze on the ground.

"I know..."

"Then why did you do it?!"

"I-I-I just w-w-wanted t-to t-t-tease her."

"Do you have any idea how messed that was? How dare you tease her for such a thing?"

"It w-w-as supposed t-t-o b-be a j-joke."

"Do you think everything she went through was a joke? Wow, Changbin, you really are an insensitive jerk."

"I said sorry, okay?" Changbin replied with attitude, hurt by Chris' words.

"Oh, you said sorry? Great, now the world's a better place. Thank you so much for saying sorry," the older male responded sarcastically.

"Well, what was I supposed to do then, Chris?!?! Turn back time?!"

"That would be appreciated."

"Look, I'm not good when it comes to thinking before I say things and you know that very well!"

"Of course, you aren't, it's a trait all jerks carry."

"STOP CALLING ME A JERK!" Changbin yelled out of anger, shoving Chris to the ground. Danica, who had been oblivious to the situation behind her, finally turned around to see the younger male holding his fist out to punch Chris.

"Do it, Binnie. Prove Tiffany right." Before the latter had the change to punch Chris, Danica was already holding his fist tightly in desperation.

"Don't, please don't. Can you both just stop?" She pleaded. "Look, I don't know what this whole 'Tiffany' ish is about but are you really going to let it get between your relationship? I mean come on, you two are so close!" The boys exchanged glances before sighing in defeat. Changbin helped the boy off the ground and they both avoided eye contact. "I saw something," Dan finally told them, earning their attention.

"What was it?" Chris asked.

"I don't know," she turned in the direction she had been walking in and took a couple of steps. "It was tall and dark."

"Do you reckon it was a building?"

"No," she shook her head. "Rather like a tree..." She turned to look at them with a smile.

"What?" They asked in unison.

"Trees need water to grow."

Changbin was the first to start sprinting in that direction followed by Chris. Danica waited a while, grinning at how excited they were at the mention of water.

Chris noticed Danny wasn't behind him and turned to see her walking.

"You okay?" He asked to which she nodded.

"I just wanted to give you a head start as I'm so much faster than you," she replied jokingly. He raised his left eyebrow, crossing his arms over his chest.

"Is that so?"

"Of course!"

"How about we race each other to the tree?" Dan smirked.

"You're on but if I win what do I get?"

"You get to drink more water than me."

"Then same applies if you win." With that, she began sprinting in the direction Changbin had left in. Chris laughed, knowing he was faster that Danica but still, he sprinted after her, making sure to keep distance between them so she could win.

However, as they neared the tree they noticed a road right in front of a forest. Changbin stood before the road, staring at it in horror. White objects occupied the road, but Dan couldn't quite make out what they were until she was standing right beside Changbin. Immediately, she covered her mouth with her right hand as she slowly collapsed to her knees. Something wasn't right.
