Day Four (3)
As soon as they entered the kitchen with the violets, Aarialla spun around, pushing herself into a corner. Dan furrowed her eyebrows at her actions. Was it a family thing?
"Hi, Aarialla," she greeted. Pulling the flowers off their stems and into a nearby cup which she soon filled with boiling hot water.
"Hello, Danica. Where those flowers you just out in that cup violets?" The alien asked, relaxing a bit.
"Yeah...you don't mind do you?"
"N-no, of course not." Danny stared at her as she trembled helplessly.
"Are you sure?"
"Yes, darling." The teenage girl sighed, taking a sip of her violet tea, humming softly when the water came in contact with her tongue.
"Is it a family thing to be scared of violet? Or is it an alien thing?"
"What? Scared? Pfft, neither, honey, why would we be scared of those puny flowers?" With a cock of an eyebrow, Dan took a couple of steps towards her, earning a scream from the alien as she hastily climbed onto her counter, desperate for an escape.
"I don't know, Aarialla, seems like you're scared to me. Jisung was the same when we were outside and I remember long ago, Ariana was terrified too," she explained, placing the cup on a counter and crossing her arms over her chest. "Is it a family thing? Or an alien thing?" She asked, sterner this time round. The alien sighed.
"There is a special liquid that runs through our veins as well as blood that helps keep us...well...alien. Violets cleanse that liquid causing it to turn into plain water. Without this substance in our system, an alien is at risk of die or it may even become a different species altogether."
"A different species?"
"Become a human, Danica."
"Is that why Jisung always switches between his alien and human form whenever he comes in contact with it?"
"Yes, exactly."
"Cool," Danny mumbled as she took another sip of the tea. "I'll go drink this outside, I don't want to interfere with whatever you were doing before," she announced before heading outside with her notebook and pen.
"What's that?" she heard a weak voice ask. Turning around she was surprised to see Changbin taking a seat beside her as he glanced at the notebook in her hand.
"It's just a book..."
"I saw a picture of two aliens..." She shook her head, flipping back to the page he had seen.
"That's Ariana," she pointed to the first picture. "And that was my mum," she pointed to the second picture. "I was always interested on finding the source of Carsania and its cure."
"So you knew all along?"
"Knew what?"
"That the disease is caused by aliens?"
"Yeah, I was certain of it as soon as I saw the first Carsania-infected person on the television."
"How though?"
"First off, Ariana had warned me in the final letter she wrote and secondly, they looked identical to aliens."
"And you didn't mention it to anyone?"
"Oh please, Changbin, do you really think people would believe a sixteen-year-old girl who lost both her parents to the disease when she tells them aliens are the source of it? They'd think I was losing it and getting Carsania myself!"
"I guess that's true...so have you found a cure yet?" She shook her head.
"No...but something is telling me that I'm so close."
"Could it be that?" He pointed to the gem that was lying on her chest, glowing brighter than ever.
"The heck? I wasn't even thinking about it..." she mumbled before standing up. "I'm going to ask Aarialla about it, want to come with?"
"Yeah, sure."
Aarialla sat in the living room, sipping on a cup of freshly brewed tea when the duo entered the cottage.
"Aarialla," Danica called.
"Yes, dear?" was her response as she kept her gaze on the window, glancing at the landscape outside.
"What's up with the gem now?" she asked, immediately turning the alien's gaze to it. She narrowed her eyes as she approached the girl. "I wasn't even talking let alone thinking about it."
"Oh yes, darling, I know. The gem never glows like this at such measly actions. How long has it been glowing like this?"
"I don't know, Changbin just pointed it out. Why?"
"It seems the gem's trying to tell you something important. You have to be very careful and very alert, Danica, you cannot miss what's it's trying to tell you." Danny furrowed her eyebrows, staring down at the gem.
"What happens if I do miss it?"
"I don't know darling."
"But you said you were once its keeper, how don't you know?"
"The gem hasn't glowed this bright for anyone before. I only know what to say because the gem told all those years back."
"Why am I the only one these things happen to?" Dan shouted, growing frustrated because she felt so confused.
"Because, Danica, you are the last bearer of the gem." Danny sighed.
"Tomorrow, we are going to the main UFO and getting rid of this stupid gem, okay?" she told Changbin, who was behind her and Jisung, who sat adjacent to his aunt. They both exchanged glances with the alien before nodding to the girl. "Good. Now, follow me Changbin. I'm going to teach you how to use a gun."
Outside, the sun sat a little past halfway in the sky. The violet field stood a few metres away from the duo as Dan taught him how to a work a gun.
"That's all you need to know, just continue practising it until you master it," she told him, sitting down beside the violets, sniffing them. Once again, the feeling of something telling her she was close to finding the cure of Carsania returned. She furrowed her eyebrows, looking down to see the gem glowing brightly again.
She looked back at the violets, twirling one between her thumb and index finger as she stared intensely at it. She knew the gem was trying to tell her something but couldn't put her finger on it until she suddenly had a flashback to earlier on that day.
Flashback
"There is a special liquid that runs through our veins as well as blood that helps keep us...well...alien. Violets cleanse that liquid causing it to turn into plain water. Without this substance in our system, an alien is at risk of die or it may even become a different species altogether."
"A different species?"
"Become a human, Danica."
Shooting up from her spot between the violets, Danica cheered, a wide grin plastered across her face.
"Are you alright?" Changbin asked, averting his attention to her rather than improving his shooting skills.
"I found the cure, Changbin!"
"The cure to?"
"Carsania."
"Really? What?"
"Violets, Changbin. Aarialla had said they cleanse a substance in the alien body that keeps them alien. Without it, an alien can become human."
"What does that have to do with Carsania?"
"Carsania is a disease that turns humans into aliens and I bet it starts on the inside then goes to work on the outside. That special liquid that aliens need is what turns them into an alien. It must be the first thing that goes in an infected person's system. If they consume a violet flower, it will cleanse the person and the person will be healed. That's why my mother was never infected until all the violets died," she explained, dancing around in an excited manner. "I found the cure to Carsania, Changbin! I did it!"
