Chapter 14

Duskrose turned around at the screech, her ears flattening. Where was Darksight?! She cried out in fear. "Darksight!"

Otterdawn padded over and tried to comfort her, but Duskrose turned away. The other clan cats turned back and shot curious glances.

"Where did you meet her, really?" Otterdawn hissed softly. She butted Duskrose, keeping up with the other cats. Duskrose sighed, looking back, at the area Darksight disappeared.

"I..." Duskrose sighed, staring into Otterdawn's eyes. "I saw her in a dream... We were playing happily... I was a younger self, and we were playing. StarClan said that Darksight would betray us, but if I was friends with her, everything would... be..." She crumpled.

Otterdawn sighed and eased her up. "Let's go. Darksight will follow us." Then she padded away, along with the others.

Duskrose sighed, casting one last glance at the forest, and then she followed the others into the rising sun.

"This is the Thunderpath," Dawnstar yowled over the murmurs. "Beware of the monsters, and try not to get squashed!"

Duskrose shivered.  Being squashed sounded scary.

"Who wants to go first?" Dawnstar asked.

Duskrose sighed. If she wanted to get there to their new home, she had to cross this thunderpath.

"Me." Duskrose raised her tail.  Every cat around her whirled around and stared at her. She stalked to the black road and she stared at the roaring monsters thundering past her.

She breathed in deeply, and she counted. The beats of her trembling heart. Thump... Thump Thump...  Time slowed. She leaped across the surface of the black and burning path.  She twisted and turned, her body dodging the monster's legs. She leaped onto the grass on the other side, panting.

Every cat murmured in approval, and they all started to cross the thunderpath.

"Help!" Wolfpaw was staring wide-eyed at the next coming monster, his paws frozen with shock. The monster would crush him in 3... 2...1...

Duskrose lunged forward and grabbed Wolfpaw by the scruff and shoved him to safety. Duskrose gasped as the leg hit her side. She tumbled over by the impact. Her side burned. Her lungs screamed. She skidded to a halt in the grass. Her side oozed with...

Dawnstar screamed with fear.

Wolfpaw stared blankly at the sky.

Duskrose squeezed her eyes and took a breath, and quickly hissed with pain. Everything hurt.

"I'm not dying." Duskrose gasped. She stared at the sky.

"Not on my watch!" Otterdawn snarled, her eyes glowing with energy - green energy? Otterdawn's power floated around Duskrose's body, and the wound closed.

Duskrose scrambled up to her paws. "Wha-? Did you just heal me? H-how?"

Otterdawn looked at her paws. "I- I don't know..."

"Wolfpaw! Are you alright?!" Leafwatcher, Wolfpaw's mother, dashed over and gave her son a strong lick.  "You can't just wait for someone to die for you!"

Wolfpaw mumbled and buried his muzzle in Leafwatcher's fur.

Duskrose shook herself and got up to her paws. "Let's go."

Dumbfounded, the other cats trudged forward. Together, they walked into the daylight. Tired but brave, they had the faith that nobody else had.
