Chapter 13

The sun's bright rays pierced the blanket and hit Dawn's eyes. She woke up to the feeling of someone's weight on her legs. She peaked her head out to find Chris sitting on her bed, thinking.

"Get out of my room!" she yelled in as deep of a voice as she could - it was 7 in the morning and her throat was dry. Chris jumped in surprise.

"What? Why?" he asked, genuinely confused.

"Chris, it's rather embarrassing to wake up to find someone on your bed without your knowledge, isn't it? Get off me! Your sitting on my leg!" she yelled again, covering up her head, so it came out muffled. He immediately stood up.

"Sorry..." he mumbled. He reached up to pull the covers down, but Freya burst in.

"Daw-" she started, but corrected herself when she saw Chris, "Day! I need to change your dressing." She walked up to Dawn and pulled the cover down a bit. She noticed Dawn's golden white hair and hid a startled gasp. Dawn sent her sister a pleading look. Please, please help me! she thought.

"Chris, could you give us five minutes? I need to help Day change his dressing. Why don't you get him breakfast?" she suggested. He agreed and rushed to the dining hall. He was too worried to wonder why "Day" would prefer Freya to help over him.

"Thank you..." muttered Dawn, sitting up in bed at last.

"Did you just come by here to check on me?" she asked.

"No... I wanted to tell you that mother called. She wants to meet you again. What should I tell her?" replied Freya, worried.

Dawn rubbed the back of her neck, a habit she developed over the time she pretended to be a boy.

"I don't know what to do..." she muttered, getting up and limping to the bathroom with Freya's help. She put her wig on and changed into a casual blue shirt and long grey pants after replacing the gauze over her injury. The cut was clean and looked disinfected. It was pink, rather than red and it still hurt when she moved, but it felt much better. Maybe I'll heal in less than two weeks... she hoped, crossing her fingers.

"You could tell mother you slipped?" Freya suggested once Day was ready.

"Or that you twisted your ankle while running in heels. Or that you got stabbed by a bandit while strolling in the garden."

"You know what... I'll go with the first one... How about I tripped on my heels and fell down the stairs?" Day asked. Freya grinned.

"It works. I'll tell her you'll meet her sometime next week. You'll be able to walk a bit by then." she said. Day smiled, but it was a sad one.

"What is it?" asked Freya, worried.

"I don't want to talk about it. Later, okay?" she said, urging Freya out of the door, "I promise I'll tell you later."

A few minutes later, Chris opened the door and brought a tray filled with food. He set it down on Day's bed.

"Thanks." said Day, side hugging Chris in gratitude. She stared at what was placed before her - A plate stacked high with pancakes with a bowl of fruit on the side and chocolate cake to go with it. She dug in and in minutes, it was gone. Chris laughed.

"What? This is the best food I've had in a long time." Day remarked. It was true - she only had time to grab a quick bite after their run and before their training began.

Satisfied with a full stomach, she sighed and lay in bed. Day spent the rest of the morning playing board games with Chris. He went away around noon. She slept early.

Over the next 5 days, Dawn went through the same thing again. She would be visited by Chris, or Eli and sometimes Freya would sneak in. Other than that, she spend time reading adventure stories or would try her hand at a new hobby. She had tried painting, knitting (she hid it from the boys of course) and even baking. Though none of them interested her and she wasn't very good at them. All she wished was to go and train with her friends. And most important of all, forget the knight when it all had happened.

The fact that she, Dawn or Day or whatever people wanted to call her, had killed a man. The thought itself frightened her. By the time a week passed, while Dawn felt much better physically, her mental state only worsened.

As soon as she woke up, Dawn was hit with a storm of thoughts regarding the same horrifying night that had been haunting her for so long.

"I don't want to be a monster..." she whispered to herself, hugging her knees close. Right then, a knock sounded on the door.

"Who is it?" she asked softly.

"Day? Is that you? Are you okay?" came Chris's voice through the door. Dawn sighed and got off the bed.

"Give me a second." she said, altering her voice into Day's and changing into the wig. She limped over to the door and opened it and put on a wide smile. Chris smiled back as he came inside and sat down on the bed.

After a few minutes, Chris broke the silence. "I may be a bit stupid when it comes to many things, but I know my friends. What happened, Day? Your eyes are red. Have you been sleeping well?" he questioned. Day rubbed her forehead and sighed.

"Not really. How can I?" She looked at Chris.

"I'm a monster. I killed a man, Chris! I don't kill! What have I become?" Day cried out. Chris put a hand around her shoulder.

"Day, it's fine. It happens. It's part of the job. Being a knight means doing hard things. Making sacrifices and most important of all, killing if needed. You'll be okay. The pain will eventually subdue. It might never go away, but try not to let it control you or your life. You are more than a killer Day, you're you." he said, turning her to look into her eyes.

Day nodded and looked down. "Have you... Have you ever...?" she asked. Chris smiled sadly.

"I was 16. It was my mother's killer. I couldn't stand to see him alive... I... I regret it now. I wish I didn't do it for revenge. It didn't make me feel any better. It made life worse. I put distance between me and my family, my friends. Don't do that to me. And I'm here if you ever need me." he replied, squeezing Day's fingers. Day let out a small smile.

"Thank you." she whispered. "Thought, this is rather deep, even for you." she remarked, lightly. Chris chuckled but said, "I'm serious! You can always count on me." Day smiled again and looked down. After noticing her hand in his, she immediately pulled it away.

Chris rolled his eyes, "Really? Can't friends hold hands?"

"Can't you be a little less... gross?" argued Day, a slight blush creeping up her neck. She stood up abruptly and said a hastened 'goodbye', leading Chris out the door

"Wait!" exclaimed Chris. Day stopped pushing Chris out the door. "Nothing. Nevermind. Just... don't let it get to your head. And get well soon!" he said at last, waving goodbye and heading to his own room.

Day was left standing on her own with many many thoughts swirling inside of her head. And admittedly, some of them were about Chris and what he said.

"Thanks?" she muttered to no one in particular, walking back inside for lunch.

This continues to the next chapter - they both happen on the same day. I hope you liked it! Do tell me what you think!

I'm worried... Is it sounding rude to ask for votes and comments? Well I'm not entirely begging you to do it... Still... Sorry if you don't like it! Maybe I should take them all down... But really, THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR READING! ALL OF YOU ARE AMAZING!

Have a great day!
