Chapter 18

"It's always hard to sleep in a different place, Nova," Star reassured her restless pup. Nova was fidgeting around on the unfamiliar dirt, unable to fall asleep. Next to them, Star and Raven were already fast asleep, curled up next to each other.

Dawn and Summer were unfortunately stuck with the same problem. Dawn could only imagine the branches surrounding them as twisted, mangled sets of claws reaching out to grab her.

"Dawn?" Summer whispered.

"Yeah?" Dawn replied quietly.

"I can't sleep..."

"Neither can I..."

"Well, no duh. Otherwise I wouldn't be talking to you," Summer snickered.

Dawn softly chuckled, and the air was silent for a few moments before Summer spoke again.

"Hey, so, um..." she began. "Do you remember the other night when I... attacked you guys?"

"Mm-hmm?" Dawn nodded.

"It's all I've been able to think about these past few days. What was it? Have you ever seen something like it in your dreams?"

"No, I haven't."

"What could it be then? What if it happens again? What if I hurt someone I love, like you or Goliath?" Summer's tone was quivering a bit.

"Do you remember what happened before it?" Dawn asked.

"W-Well... I was almost asleep. It was all quiet. And suddenly, all I could hear were echoey voices... they were saying things like 'darkness will arise...' 'all will be lost...' 'blood will be shed...'"

"Hey, you were saying that before you attacked Evan," Dawn said, remembering her sister's words.

"I was? Did I also say... how did it go...? Oh, yeah. Something like... 'claws will shred...' 'teeth will tear...' 'wolves will die...'?"

"'Pups and elders alike...'" Dawn finished.

"Do you think it's another prophecy?" Summer asked, looking down at her shaking paws.

Dawn froze. "Could it be about Rustle?"

"What are you two talking about?" said a voice suddenly, causing Dawn and Summer to jump. They looked up to see that it was only Alberta, and they sighed in relief.

"Don't spook us like that, Mom," Summer said, chuckling.

"Sorry, girls," Alberta apologized, stepping over and laying in front of the sisters. "I just couldn't help overhearing what you were saying. I believe I have an idea of what you were talking about."

"You mean about me going insane?" Summer asked, ears perking up.

"Yes," Alberta started. "Are you familiar with the Powers?"

Dawn shook her head. "I've heard of some other wolves mentioning it, but no. I've always wondered what it was."

"Well, ever since the beginning of everything, there have been four main Powers among the wolves: courage, honesty, aversion, and love. There's an old legend that says each wolf, winged or not, is born with one of the four Powers," Alberta explained. "It shows in their decisions and personalities as they grow and mature. Back in the old days, many wolves wouldn't name their pups until they figured out their Power as adults."

"So... it's like a personality thing?" Summer asked. "That's kinda dumb."

"Ah, but that's where you fall into play," Alberta grinned. "You see, there are other Powers that are in nature and other things, but you four have something special... You have the Power of Four."

"That sounds... slightly less dumb," Summer said, confused.

"You see, winged Quadruplets can get different Powers. It's extremely rare, but rather than courage, honesty, aversion, and love, you could have healing, augury, corruption, and protection."

"I've had prophesying dreams before," Dawn realized. "Augury..."

"And Twilight is constantly looking after his family and what's right for them. He'd have the Power of protection," Summer continued.

"Riptide could be healing?" Dawn figured. "He used medicinal plants on me after I fell off the waterfall and hit my head on a rock."

"So that means... I have the Power of corruption..." Summer froze. "That's what happened to me the other night... Mom? What's gonna happen to me?" Her voice quivered again, this time beginning to tear up. "I don't wanna hurt anyone..." Fur bristling, she sunk her claws into the dirt.

Alberta nuzzled her. "Shhhhh... it's okay, girl. You'll be fine..."

"Y-Yeah!" Dawn tried to calm her down. "If we beat it once, we can be it again!"

Summer sniffed and sighed, beginning to relax again. "R-Right... It'll be okay..."

"But didn't you say you could hear voices?" Alberta asked.

Summer nodded.

"Yes yes..." she replied as if she were forming a master plan. "Corruption doesn't mean destined evil. It can mean communication with previous evil, or like spirits and things. They know more than we do after all. As long as you stay calm in the future, I believe you'll all be fine. Maybe all that happened last night because you were using your Power for the first time."

Summer sighed again, this time in relief. "Makes sense."

"Now then," Alberta began again. "There is one final thing about the Power of Four that most don't know about. If times are at their most dire, legends predict an incredible Power will take form, giving the Quadruplets an unpredictable Power."

"I wonder what that would be," Dawn thought aloud. "I don't think we've experienced any extremely dire situations..."

Summer shook her head, yawning.

"You two should be getting some sleep," Alberta said, sitting up.

"Yeah, we have a long, busy day of sitting in a cell all day," Summer said, playfully rolling her eyes.

"Now, now," Alberta chuckled. "You have the Power of corruption, not sarcasm, young lady!"

Dawn laughed as Alberta nuzzled her. "Good night, my pup," she whispered softly.

The white wolf sighed happily and wagged her tail. "Good night, Mom..."
