07. A Credible Threat
"Look." Cali said snapping Leo out of his thoughts. "Purging, no matter what the reason, is wrong. Killing doesn't help anything. It doesn't heal someone."
"Enough. Enough. Go back with your mommy. Go." Leo ordered, annoyance present in his voice. Cali rolled her eyes at him before walking with her mother.
Thoughts from before raced back into Leo's head, he suddenly realized that they were out on the most deadly night of the year. While he was out and about protected wearing a bullet proof vest Allison had no protection other than her bow and arrows but that could only do so much. Leo came to a stop, he put his rifle down and his bag of guns on the platform. The group behind him stopped as he took off his jacket and his vest.
"Dad what are you doing?" Allison asked sternly.
"Put this on." Leo said. He held the vest out with his hands waiting for Allison to grab it, but of course she didn't.
"I don't need that." Allison stated as she crossed her arms.
"Yes you do put it on."
"I said I don't need it." She said once again. She wasn't going to take no for an answer she knew she could protect herself.
"I can't loose you like I lost your bother, not again. Please put it on." Leo said softly.
Allison's heart softened, her father was only being like this because he didn't want to loose her. He already had lost his son, he wasn't prepared to loose his only daughter and his last surviving child. Allison grabbed the vest, she took off her quiver and bow and placed the vest over her black shirt. She slid her quiver on again and her bow.
"Now, hopefully, you won't need it." Leo said while putting his jacket back on. The group continued to walk. But it wasn't far before they heard a noise coming from the inside of the walls of the Subway station.
"What was that?" Liz asked. Leo took out his flash light and looked between the walls. Allison caught a glimpse, it was just a group of homeless people trying to survive the horrible night.
"There's no threat. They're just trying to make it through the night. Keep moving." Leo said.
The group was cut off, they heard the sound of an engine and wheels running through the gravel of the station making their heads snap to the direction it was coming from. Screams of victory echoed through the tunnel, two jeeps made their way towards them.
"Oh, shit!" Shane exclaimed.
"Move! Go! Come on!" Allison told the group as she started to run. "Run! Move! Move!" Leo yelled. The group ran as fast as they could. Allison was in the front and her father followed her, running next to her as the others followed.
The sound of bullets echoed in the tunnel. Everyone ran as fast as their two legs could take them, their breathing became heavier, hearts beat quickly, a tightness in everyone's lungs formed as their body begged for more precious oxygen. Eva came to a stop as she fell to the ground everyone stopped.
"Get up! Get up! Come on! Get up, get up, get up!" Leo said as he pointed his rifle to the group of killers making their way towards them in the jeeps.
"Mom, we have to go right now!" Cali exclaimed. Although Eva remained on the ground, a shocked expression on her face.
"Move it, move it! Move! Go, go!" Allison told her father. Leo slid his arm under the crook of Eva's legs and he slid another under her back picking her bridal style.
Leo and Cali took of running but Allison didn't, she stayed with Liz and Shane, knowing what they were thinking. "Allison come on let's go." Leo said.
Allison shook her head, "No dad, you go with them, I'm going to help Liz and Shane." Allison stated.
"But Allison you-" Leo started to say but he was cut off.
"Just go! I'll be fine." Allison said.
Leo hesitated for a moment but he nodded before Cali and him took off running again. Leo trusted his daughter, he was scared for her safety but he knew she was capable of protecting herself.
"We're not gonna make it. Fuck it." Shane said. "I agree." Allison said. She picked up her bow and reached back to grab an arrow.
Shane crouched down behind a corner and started shooting at the men in the jeep. "Shane! What are you doing?" Liz asked as she crouched down next to him as well.
Allison crouched next to Liz as she aimed at the men. "What do we do?" Liz asked. "Just shoot! Just shoot!" Shane said.
The three of them started shooting, Allison's arrow pierced through the passenger of the jeep. She picked up another arrow shooting the people in the back of the car while Liz and Shane shot the others. They were doing great until a bullet pierced Shane's shoulder and he slid down the concrete wall, wincing in pain.
"Shane! Oh, my God." Liz exclaimed.
"I'm fine, I'm fine, I'm fine! Just keep shooting. Just keep shooting. Go! Go!" Shane said.
The trio went back to shooting Allison already had eliminated the people in the first jeep all they had to do was shoot the last jeep. Bullets ripped through the air, dust flew everywhere as they kept shooting. Finally, they finished. Liz shot the driver, Allison shot the engine of the car and Shane shot the passenger, the jeep then burst into flames as it crashed into a pillar.
Leo, Cali and Eva made it to the platform, Leo put down Eva as she keeled down breathing heavily.
"I'm so sorry. I'm so sorry, I'm so sorry. I was just so scared." Eva said as she buried her face into her hands, embarrassed by what had happened. She looked down at Leo's leg, the crimson fluid staining his pant leg.
"You're bleeding." Eva said. She stuck her hand out but Leo moved his leg away.
"I cut it on the platform. It's fine." Leo said.
"We'll help you. Just tell us..." Cali tried to say but Leo cut her off.
"I said, it's fine!" Leo exclaimed.
Eva stood up wondering why Allison, Liz and Shane still weren't with them. "What's taking them so long?" She asked.
Silence fell among them, Leo felt as if his heart was caught in his throat. He couldn't bare to think that something might have happened to his daughter. Tightness built up in his chest as horrible thoughts came into his mind. Suddenly he heard footsteps and a wave of relief came over him as he saw his daughter come out of the shadows with Liz and Shane.
"Help!" Liz said. One of Shane's arms were draped over her shoulder.
"He's been shot." Allison said. Shane's other arm was draped over her shoulder too as she helped Liz carry him.
"I have no idea how bad." Liz continued. The two girls put Shane on the floor before stepping back trying to give him space and air.
"Call your friend. Tell her we're close." Leo said handing his phone to Eva.
"We're gonna get him up." Leo told Liz.
"Okay. Look at me. Look at me, Shane. Yeah? One, two, three. Get him up. Let's go!" Leo said as him, Liz and Allison picked up Shane.
The group made their way out of the Subway station and ran in the direction Eva was going. Shane's arms were draped over Leo and Liz's shoulders trying to run with him. The group ran through the streets of downtown passing by buildings and apartments.
"Hey, look, that's her building! She said to meet around the back." Eva said. She pointed at a tall apartment and everyone else nodded before they continued to follow her.
"Tanya! Let us in! It's Eva and Cali!" Eva said knocking on the hard black door. Eva's friend Tanya opened the door right away.
"Holy shit! You guys look like hell. Well except for her." Tanya said pointing to Allison. The group turned to look at Allison, she shrugged her shoulders at them before they looked back at Tanya.
"Come on, come on, hurry up. Get in here. Hurry up! I don't like being out here. Come on." Tanya said as the group made their way inside quickly.
**
The group was inside the home, some sat on the couch and others stayed standing up.
"All right. The bullet went right through." Leo said as both him and Liz cleaned and treated Shane's injury. Allison stood next to them handing them the things that they needed.
"I can't believe you guys went through all that stuff. It's just insane!" Tanya said.
"Get him to the hospital first thing after this is over." Leo said looking at Liz. "Okay." She replied.
"You'll be okay. It's gonna hurt like a son of a bitch, but you're gonna be okay." Allison told Shane.
"Thanks. I can't thank you enough." Liz said looking at Leo and Allison.
"That's what you get for being a hero." Leo said.
"It's not a problem you don't have to thank us." Allison replied with a smile.
"I need the car." Leo said. His gaze stopped at Eva as he stood up. "I know." She mumbled lightly.
What Leo didn't know was that Eva had lied about the whole thing, for her own benefit so that he could get the group to their destination safely. Eva would tell him, just not yet. She still needed him to be there for all of them in case anything happened. On the night of the Purge you can't expect things to be over until the sirens blare in the early hours of the morning signifying the end to the horrible tradition.

I've seen the movie and I hope you all have seen it too because I absolutely love it. But I can't write the sequel unless I get feedback from you all so;
Should I make the sequel? It will be titled "Vigilant" So comment below yes or no, your help means a lot and get ready for a couple of more updates! Vote and comment. I'll see you all in the next chapter.
