05. Creatures of the Night
"It's so quiet here." Liz said. The group all stood together in front of the business district.
"Finally peace and quiet." Allison said as she sighed.
"The business district's always quiet on Purge Night. The banks move their money, so no one's ever down here. Let's go." Leo explained before ushering the group. Allison and Leo looked around, taking in note that anyone could show up at any moment.
"Stop." Leo told the group. Allison and Leo looked around, inspecting the area and making sure it was all clear.
"We don't even know your names. I'm Liz, and this is Shane." Liz said introducing herself to Cali and Eva. "Hi." Shane said.
"Eva. My daughter, Cali." Eva replied introducing both herself and her daughter.
"It's nice to officially meet you on this shitty night." Shane said. "Yeah." Eva said.
"Is anyone else kind of curious about this guy and the girl?" Shane asked.
But what he didn't know was that even though they were all whispering Leo and Allison could still hear them. Allison turned to her father but Leo put a finger to his mouth and Allison nodded, they continued to 'inspect the area' and pretend that they hadn't just heard them.
"I'm just glad that they're out here with us." Liz stated.
"Yeah, me, too. But we all got stuck out here, and they chose to be. That means they're Purging." Shane said.
"Hey. Let's go." Leo told the group and they continued to walk. "Are you saying that we shouldn't trust them? They saved our lives." Eva pointed out.
"All I'm saying is that they're out here armed to the teeth, on Purge Night, voluntarily. That means they're trying to do something nasty, together. I'm guessing she is his side chick or girlfriend." Shane said referring to Allison.
"We can hear you." Both father and daughter said.
"And that is just gross what a horrible accusation!" Allison exclaimed.
"He's my dad!"
"She's my daughter!"
The two yelled out at the same time. "Sorry, I can see that now." Shane said. He scratched the back of his head awkwardly in embarrassment which made him earn a smack to the arm by Liz. Leo just shook his head and Allison rolled her eyes.
"My name is Allison by the way." She said before walking behind her father.
Allison felt overwhelmed by her thoughts and emotions and kept telling herself to breathe. Everything was going to workout fine. She attempted to clear her thoughts, but seeing as that wasn't working, Allison decided to just stick behind her father.
"Hey, are you doing okay?" Leo asked his daughter as he swung the strap attached to his rifle over his left shoulder.
"I'm a little overwhelmed and nervous. I want this night to be over but I'm fine." Allison said sending a reassuring smile to her dad.
"Doing worry kiddo, it will soon be over. You're strong and I know you can do this." Leo said giving Allison a side hug. She gave him a smile as they all continued walking.
"I'm gonna go talk to him." Cali whispered to her mother. Eva shook her head in disapprove but Cali started walking away from her mother towards Leo and Allison.
"Cali. Cali." Eva said calling out her daughter's name trying to stop her.
"What's your name?" Cali asked Leo. "Shh." He uttered not responding to her question.
"You're good with guns. I'm guessing you're either a cop or a criminal, huh?" Cali continued. She wasn't going to give up on trying to get information out of the man. His stubbornness only made her even more suspicious.
"And I'm guessing you're either a pain in my ass or a pain in my ass." Leo replied. Her father's sassy and immature attitude caused Allison to chuckle under her breath quiet enough that no one heard her.
"You're out here to do it, aren't you? To Purge? That's what you have to do later on, right? What are you gonna do?" Cali continued to ask.
"Stop." Leo stated at he stopped walking clearly irritated at Cali's attitude. "New rules. You shut up. All of you, shut up."
"I'm gonna stop talking because you're being an asshole, okay? Not because you told me to shut up." Cali said as she walked back to where her mother was standing.
"Oh, my god." Eva said cringing at the view in front of her.
A famous stockbroker now hanged dead above the doors of the building. Thick chains suspended him above the group. Eva put her hand on Cali, turning her head away from the horrible sight. Leo did the same.
He quickly shielded Allison's eyes with his hand. Although she huffed at his overprotective attitude. Even though he knew that his daughter was strong enough to handle the sight he still didn't want to expose her to the bloody execution.
"Here hangs stockbroker David Neustadter. He stole our pensions. Now, he's gone." Allison heard Shane's voice as he read off of the cardboard that was on the man's chest.
"That's immature, killing someone just because they stole something from you. Just send him to jail." Allison thought.
The group turned the corner of a street, white smoke filled the air. A couple of yards away the truck that was used to attack the group earlier now stood abandoned in the street. Dead paramilitary men laid scattered on the ground.
"What the hell is that? Is that tear gas?" Shane asked as they walked closer to the truck.
"Smoke canister. Stay close, stay close, stay close." Leo said holding up his rifle. Allison took out an arrow and placed it on her bow, already preparing in case anything happened.
They all walked silently that was until a man came out of the shadows suddenly, startling everyone. He pounded onto Liz knocking her onto the ground. "Help me!" Liz exclaimed.
"Grab him! Get off her! Get off her!" Leo said pointing his gun at the man while Allison stood next to him and aimed her arrow at the man. He was already bleeding from the side of his face someone must have already taken care of him.
"We were just doing our duty." The man said as he drifted off into unconsciousness. He was dead. Allison put the silver arrow back into her quiver and slid her bow behind her on her back.
"Is she okay?" Allison asked. "He scared the shit out of me." Allison heard Liz say. "All right. You're okay, though. Just breathe. Just breathe. Just take a breath." Shane told her.
"Look at his uniform. This is one of the bastards who came into our building. And that looks like their truck." Allison overheard Cali as she told her mom.
"All right, stay here. Stay here." Leo told the group Allison followed him as they walked over to the enormous truck
"Truck 3, come in. Come in, please." A male voice spoke through a small intercom in the truck. "Truck 3, please respond!" Leo inspected the bullets as he picked up a few. He gave a signal to the group letting them know that the coast was clear.
"Go check the cab, see if this thing's working." Leo told Shane. The girls all crawled into the truck and inspected it. Allison walked backwards taking big steps in the process.
"Hey guys you're going to want to move a little." Allison told her father and the girls standing inside the truck. Liz, Cali, Eva and Leo moved to the side, Leo already knew what she was going to do but since the girls didn't their eyes were glued onto her.
Allison took one step back before running full speed towards the truck but before she could make it she jumped, her body twisted in the air and she landed perfectly on her feet inside the truck she had done a perfect front flip full twist.
Allison looked at the girls who stood in shock, Cali with her mouth wide open. "Eight years gymnastics." She said smirking before they all went back inspecting the truck.
