03. Blessings in Disguise
Most of the car ride was silent, awkwardly silent causing tension to grow between both father and daughter.
"How are you doing kiddo?" Leo asked finally speaking.
"I'm holding up. How about you dad?" Allison asked.
"I'm okay." He replied.
"Dad, wouldn't things have been the same if I hadn't survived that coma?" Allison asked out of the blue. The car suddenly came to a sharp stop causing Allison to fall back on her seat.
"Allison, no! Sweetie how could you ask me something like that?" Leo asked in shocked.
"It's just........I don't know, I was just wondering." Allison replied shrugging.
"Allison, you're the greatest thing that has ever happened to me. My only, daughter. If I lost you too I would have lost everything, you may not feel like your life is perfect but you make life perfect." Leo finished.
"Come here old man." Allison said touched by what her father told her. She wrapped her arms around his shoulders.
"I'm not that old." Leo replied. "Mmm, yes you are." Allison replied with a laugh and Leo chuckled.
"I can't believe you forced me to let you tag along with me on this night. I told you I don't want you getting hurt or hell even worse, dying." Leo said.
"Dad I'm not going to die and I forced you because I specifically said if you didn't take me with you I was going to walk all the way from the house to come and find you." Allison said crossing her arms.
"Yeah and knowing you I couldn't take that risk. You're stubborn just like your mother." Leo said tapping his fingers on the steering wheel as they continued to drive.
"Ugh don't mention that woman. You know how much I don't like her, she's changed. A lot. Thankfully you got full custody over me. After what happened." Allison said mumbling the last part while playing with her thumbs.
"I know you don't like her but she's still your mother and you have to respect her." Leo said. "I know, I know, she makes it difficult though." Allison replied as Leo stopped the car in front of an apartment.
"Speaking of difficult....." Allison trailed off as she saw two heavily armed paramilitary men dragging two women out of their apartment. She noticed the fight they were putting up. The fight to survive.
"Just drive, just drive, just drive." Allison heard her father say as he put the gun that he had in his hand in front of him behind the steering wheel.
The two heard the cries and pleads for help of the women in trouble but they continued to watch. "Dad we can't just drive away, we have to help them." Allison said picking up her bow and placing an arrow on it.
"You're right. Come on then, let's go." Leo said stepping out of the car and Allison did too.
Leo loaded his rifle and Allison loaded her back up gun just in case. The two walked carefully, looking around and checking the alleys to make sure no one was there. Allison and Leo ran towards a bush and stood behind it waiting for their cue. Leo looked over the bush and signaled Allison, after that signal Leo started shooting at the men.
Allison reached behind her, grabbing 2 more arrows from her quiver and placing them on her bow. She held on to the bow and pulled back the string. Aiming at the first man she let go of the string, she pulled it again and let another arrow pierce the heart of the second man and then the third one. They all fell to the ground lifelessly in order of who she shot first to the last man that she had shot.
Allison finished and saw her father shoot the man that was standing in the black truck. Allison and Leo looked around with their weapons still raised up in case other men came. Luckily the only men that we there were the ones laying on the ground, dead. Leo started walking away from the two women but Allison grabbed her father's wrist and gave him a look. She wasn't just going to let the two women die on this night and neither was her father. Leo nodded at Allison knowing what she was thinking.
"You can come with us, you're in good hands." Allison told the two women. The women looked at each other and stood up as they jogged with Leo and Allison as they headed back to the car. Once they all made it to the car Leo opened the door. Although it wasn't left like it was before, a couple now sat together in the back.
"Hey! Out of the car!" Leo said while holding up his rifle.
"No, no, no!"
"Please! Please, don't!"
"Get out of the car, or I will shoot!" Leo exclaimed.
"We're not Purging! We don't have any weapons! Please." The couple pleaded.
"I will shoot you!"
"Please don't shoot!"
"Move out of the car now!"
"No, we're not armed!"
"Dad just let them stay!" Allison yelled.
"Get out of the car!" Leo said once again ignoring Allison's comment.
"We can't! They're after us!"
Allison looked up and saw the same guy that her father had shot before, he now was standing up ready to shoot them at any moment.
"Guys stop arguing! We've got bigger problems, look!" Allison said pointing at the man.
"We've got to go, come on." Cali said.
Allison hopped into her seat and the couple and the mother and daughter sat in the back. Leo turned on the car and started driving away as the man in the truck started shooting at the car. Luckily it was bullet proof so the bullets bounced off of the car. As they turned the corner the bullets and the flashing stopped.
"They're not following us. They're gone, they're all gone." Shane, the young man said.
"Are you sure?" Leo asked him.
"Yeah, yeah they're gone."
"Hey baby, are you alright? Are you okay?" Eva asked her daughter.
"Yeah mom I'm fine and you?" Cali asked Eva just nodded in response, she too was okay.
"Sir, ma'am, are you both okay?" Cali asked. Leo didn't answer he just stared at Cali from the front view mirror.
Allison elbowed her father, but he still didn't answer. "Yeah no worries, we're fine." Allison said gritting her teeth at her dad but smiling at Cali.
"You. What was that army doing in your building? Why were they after you?" Leo asked Eva as he looked at her from the mirror .
"I don't know!"
"Why were they after you?" Leo asked again.
"I don't know! I don't know." Eva replied frantically. She shook her head.
"Why are you in the streets?" Leo asked the couple sitting in the back.
"Our car just broke down." The guy, Shane said.
"We're not out to purge we don't want to hurt anyone." His wife, Liz continued.
"Are you armed?" Leo asked.
"No, no." The couple replied at the same time.
"What about you two, what were you both doing outside?" Cali asked both father and daughter.
Allison and Leo looked at each other, then they looked at Cali through the mirror but they stayed silent causing Cali to become even more suspicious. Leo continued to drive and Allison looked outside the window only to see a girl covered in blood from head to toe, she turned her head away and closed her eyes for a moment.
"Mom, mom, it's okay. We're safe here." Cali said reassuring her mom.
"No, we're not." Eva said shaking her head.
"Sir, where are we going? Honestly anywhere but here is fine with me." Cali said and once again Leo didn't respond he just stared at her.
A pop suddenly was heard, Allison looked through the window and saw smoke coming from the hood of the car.
"Maybe nowhere." Leo said finally replying to Cali's comment.
He pulled over and both him and Allison went outside to check out the car. They lifted the hood up and propped it up with the metal stick.
10 bullets maybe even more had punctured the car's system. It was dead now, useless even. Leo closed the hood and walked back to the group in the car.
"Whoever was in that truck was using armor piercing bullets. The car is dead." Leo informed them.
"So, that's it. We're stuck outside on purge night. What are we gonna do?" Eva asked as she put her face in her hands.
"Can't we just hide in here? We have seven hours until morning." Liz suggested.
"There's hunters out there with dogs. Sooner or later, they're gonna find you. But you do what you want." Leo replied.
"You're on your own now." Allison said finishing his sentence.
"Huh?"
"What?"
"Whoa!"
"Whoa, what do you mean, we're on our own?" Liz asked as she stepped out of the car and followed Leo and Allison.
She knew that all of them weren't capable of surviving alone they wouldn't be able to make it through the night without both father and daughter at their side.
"I should never have gotten involved. It's none of my business." Leo stated as he opened the trunk of the car.
"Okay, but you did, so it is your business now, all right? So, what are we all going to do?" Shane asked. He wasn't giving up that easily especially not today.
"Take this. It's loaded." Leo said handing a gun to the two pairs.
"Actually having someone sneak into your car without your permission isn't getting involved it's having your privacy violated." Allison told Shane as she crossed her arms over her chest. Seeing as he had no comeback Shane didn't say anything which caused a smirk to form on Allison's face.
"So your just giving us guns?" Liz asked.
"You should thank us any other person would have left you defenseless." Allison said and Leo nodded.
"Where are you two going?" Liz asked.
"We've got some place to be before the sun comes up we can't take you with us, you'll slow us down." Leo explained.
"We won't slow you down." She reassured him.
"So, you're really just gonna leave us here?" Cali asked.
"Stay off the streets and find a place to hide." Allison suggested.
"Please take us with you guys we are not the kind of people who will survive tonight." Liz said.
Allison couldn't help but feel bad and guilty, she wanted to help them out but she knew her father well enough to know what he was thinking.
"Let them go they doesn't want to help us." Shane said.
"Shane shut up!" Liz exclaimed.
"Why did you save us if you were just gonna leave us here to die?" Cali asked. Even more guilt settled inside of Allison.
"Wait! I can get you a car. I have a friend in the city not far from here. I've worked with her for years. If you get us there safely, you can take her car and do what you have to do." Eva said.
"Where does she live?" Leo asked her as he walked over to her.
"Third and Bryant." Eva responded.
"Will she give me her car?" Leo asked.
"Mmm-hmm."
"Are you sure?"
"Mmm-hmm."
"Make sure." Leo said as he handed Eva his phone.
"That was a real dick move walking away then coming back." Cali said and Leo just smiled/smirked.
"Yeah that kind of was." Allison agreed. Leo shot Allison a look before they both started looking up and moving their heads at different angles.
"What are you looking for?" Shane asked.
"Snipers." Leo and Allison responded. After they said that everyone backed up against the wall.
"Uh, she lives with her parents. They're happy to have us. If you can get us to her place safely, the car is yours." Eva said handing Leo his phone.
"Can she help us too?" Liz asked.
"Yeah." Eva responded.
"Thank you." Liz said.
"All right, I'm gonna help you get to your friend's, but I want that car." Leo stated.
"I know." Eva said.
"All right, you listen to what I say. You stay close. You slow me down, I cut you all loose, you understand?" Leo asked the group.
Allison looked at them waiting for a response, "Yeah." They all said together.
"Okay. Let's go." Leo said picking up his rifle and Allison slipped her bow behind her securing it in place.
"This is is going to be a long night." She thought as her and the rest of the group started walking together.
