Epilogue

"Tris! Where are you?" I call out as I walk into the room.

"Here." She replies, walking out of our daughter's room, followed by the three year old Emma who runs to me and I pick her up.

"How was work?" Tris asks walking up to us.

"Nothing different. Zeke insisted on going zip lining with the kids but no way am I doing that because I don't want to have another heart attack." I reply.

Tris walks past me shaking her head at the memory of me zip lining. I turn my attention to the girl in my arms. "And how was your day?"

She stretches out her arm and shows me something on her arm. It's Tris and my name with arrows pointing downwards towards her name.

"Wow! Is that a family tree?" I ask her.

She nods her head so hard that her hair brushes my face, making me smile. "It's a family tree. Aunty Christina suggested that I get a tattoo of this when I turn twelve."

I groan and set her down before turning to Tris who is going through some papers, probably her new initiates.

"I told you not to let Christina put any funny ideas inside my daughter's head!"

"It isn't my fault. I had to go for Initiation and you were busy with your leader work, so I had to leave her with someone and it happens to be that Chris and Will are the only ones who haven't gotten married yet. So, I didn't have a lot of options for her babysitter." She explains, not looking up from her papers.

I sigh and say. "Come on, Em let's put you to bed."

I take her small hand in mine and lead her to her bedroom. After tucking her in, I sit on the bed's edge and wait for her to fall asleep.Once her eyes close and her breathing evens I go back to Tris and flop down next to her on the couch.

After sitting in silence for a few minutes, I ask."How're this year's initiates?"

Again, she doesn't look up but replies. "They're alright. The good thing is none of them are gay or suicidal."

I put an arm around her shoulders. "Hey! You have to let go of it. I mean, Henry is happy now. He's an instructor, just like you and he's got a huge group of friends. So, don't worry."

She leans into me and puts her head on my shoulder. Suddenly, she sits up. "I completely forgot to tell you. They needed volunteers to help the Abnegation with the factionless. So, I volunteered because Emma is off from school tomorrow and none of us has work either."

She tells me.At once a strange feeling fills up inside me. I'm sad and happy. I can't decide on one. I sigh and lean back against the back of the couch.

Seeing me, her smile fades."Oh Tobias! I'm sorry! I never thought about that." She apologizes.

But I stop her by pressing my lips to hers. When I pull away she starts to speak again but I stop her. "Don't worry. I'm fine with it. It's been three years now which is enough time for me to recover from all that."

She looks down at her hands and nods. "Okay. But what if we run into one of them."

"Ignoring them is the best strategy that I can think if." I reply.

She looks up and meets my gaze. "Tobias, look. I know that they were hard on you and they bullied you your whole life but they're still your family."

I groan and throw up my hands. "That is the problem! Everyone is ready to forgive people just because they're their family or best friend. No matter how someone is related to you, as long as they hurt you, they don't deserve your sympathy."

She reaches out and squeezes my hand and then says. "We should get some sleep. We have to take breakfast with us."

With this she gets up and goes to our bedroom. I stay put for some time, trying to come to terms with the fact that I might have to face my sworn enemies tomorrow.

After a while I get up and go to Emma's room and check on her. She's cuddled with a teddy bear and sleeping soundly. I go to my own bedroom to find Tris is bed. I change into a pair of pajamas and slip into bed.She moves over to my side and slips under my arm. I hold her close to me as sleep takes over and my eyes close.

The next morning I wake up to find Tris missing from my side. I change into my usual attire and then find her in the living room with an excited Emma sitting next to her.

"I already got breakfast. Ready to go?" She asks me, raising an eyebrow.

I nod my head. "Yeah."

I hold out my hand to Emma who takes it eagerly and I lead her out of the apartment and towards the exit. There are several people already there. Most of them are families until someone walks up to us, saying.

"Morning guys!"

"Morning Christina." Tris replies and Emma waves at her. I just merely nod my head in reply because I haven't forgotten last night.

"Is that breakfast?" Will asks walking up to us.

Tris opens up the package she's holding and the aroma of muffins reaches my nose. Everyone takes theirs and then Tris holds out mine to me. I take it from her and gobble it all down. In a couple of minutes people start al walking towards the tracks.

I stoop down in front of Emma and she climbs onto my back. When the train arrives, Tris gets on before us and then I say. "Hang on baby girl."

On board I set her down and Tris slips her hand into mine. "You okay?"

I nod my head in reply and look at Emma who's looking at a couple of teenagers fooling around. I remember being one of them on countless occasions. When we reach our destination, we get off in the same manner. First Tris and then me.

When I land next to her I find a system already laid out. The factionless are standing in rows in front of the few Dauntless who are handing out things to them.

Tris walks over to the Abnegation in charge and gets the cartons we'll be distributing. She walks over to some factionless waiting for us and opens one of the boxes. It's food.

She takes out packages and hands them out while I play around with Emma. She runs around the bench I'm sitting on. All of a sudden I jump up into her way making her squeal and runs away laughing.

"Tobias!" Tris calls out. Motioning towards me to join her. I leave Emma playing with a couple of other kids.

"What?" I ask putting my arms around Tris's waist.

"I want you to meet someone." She says and I look in front of her to find a factionless man grinning at me. I point at him to make sure. She nods in reply. I let go and stand next to her as she explains.

"He is the one who leant me Romeo and Juliet." The man speaks up in a heavy voice.

"And I'm glad that you did because seeing young couples makes me happy and...is that your daughter?" He points to something behind me.

I turn around to find his finger pointed at Emma, I turn back towards him.

"Yeah."

"Good lads." With this he takes his food and leaves and the next person moves forward.

I'm about to walk away when I feel Tris freeze. I look at her to find her dead in her tracks staring at someone with the package held out in front of her.

The person is Eric.

My breathing hitches but I manage to keep myself calm and stay by her side in case he tries anything funny. But instead of taking his share and leaving he starts talking.

"I overheard you saying that you have a daughter. Aren't you going to introduce her to her uncle?" He asks.

Tris beats me to answering. "Yes, we have a daughter and..." I cut in. "You can meet her."

This makes Tris's head snap up to look at me with a confused look on her face. I just turn away and call out."Em! Come meet someone!"

She runs over to us and stops by her mother's side.

Tris says. "Emma, meet Eric."

She starts to walks forward with her hand outstretched but I hold out a hand and stop her from walking.

"I didn't ask her to meet you so that you can get all warm with her. I want to make a point. It's not like we're going to be alive forever." With this I kneel down in front of my daughter and point towards Eric. "I want you to promise me something. If you ever see this man or someone who even vaguely resembles him, you won't talk to him. Never. No matter what the circumstances are. Alright?"

She frowns at first but then nods her head, saying. "Okay."

"Good. Now you can take your food and get away from us." I tell him.

The glare he gives me is poisonous as if he wants to strangle me right now but I know that killing a leader is not a good option for him given his history.

I smile as he walks away to his factionless buddies or whatever. Still kneeling I wrap an arm around Emma and reach up and take Tris's hand.

This is what real life is. Where you have all the people you love.
