[Chapter 47] The Trial.
I know that we got married yesterday but Tris and I decided to sleep in our own apartments because mine held too many memories of Eric and Marcus. Speaking of them, they are currently detained by the Dauntless.
A trial is going to be held today where all the leaders and the witnesses from the wedding are going to be present. That's where we're going to meet.
I take a shower and change my clothes. I meet Evelyn coming out of her room.
"Did you sleep well?" She asks and I nod my head. How could've I not slept well because now I know that nothing and nobody can take Tris away from me.
We head for the dinning hall. I walk in after her. She goes to sit with her friends and I go to join mine. Zeke sees me coming and I wish he hadn't because,
"The wedding boy's here! Let's have a round of applause, shall we?"
Everyone at his table start clapping making me feel uncomfortable. Then the tables next to it join in and it only adds to the uneasy feeling. I flop down into the seat opposite from him and mumble. "Thanks, man!"
He reaches over and pats my shoulder. "No problem! Anything for my best friend."
I groan as everyone at the table laughs. Once everyone's gone back to talking I look around. I keep looking unable to eat any breakfast. I stop looking when Christina walks in and sits down next to Zeke.
"Hey! Looking for Tris?" She asks me, I nod my head.
"She said she's going to skip breakfast because she's feeling queasy and too tired to get up as yet. So, she's going to meet you at the trial."
"Okay." I say.
For once after a really long time Dauntless cake finally seems appealing to me. I ladle as much as I can onto my plate and then sit down to eat it. After swallowing large chunks, I feel someone's eyes on me. I look up to find Zeke, Shauna and Christina looking at me.
"What?" I ask them.
"It's good to have to have you back." Shauna says, smiling at me.
"What do you mean by that? I was right here."
"You're the dumbest, most idiotic, stupidest, jelly brain..." I cut into Zeke's insults. "Okay! We all get it! Now, can you cut to the chase?"
"You only eat it cake when you feel up to it. And it looks like you're up to it now." The explanation makes us all burst out laughing.
Between the howls of laughter, Christina manages to say. "I don't even know why we're laughing."
Once we've sobered down, Shauna adds. "This is exactly what I meant by having you back. I missed moments like these."
Just then Uriah walks over and flops down next to me. Throughout lunch he keeps peaking at something over his shoulder.
"What are you looking at?" I ask, turning around myself to see what it is.
"Marlene." Uriah says as if lost in a dream. I see what Zeke's about to do and start to stop him but he throws the water from the pitcher, showering us both with water.
"What did you do that for?!" Uriah exclaims.
"Snap out of it. What's up with you?" Zeke asks.
"Marlene is the most perfect person in this planet." Hearing his romantic talk makes us all groan but we're interrupted by an announcement being made by Max.
"All people who have been requested to attend the trial of Marcus Eaton and..." He gulps before adding. "...Eric Eaton, please make your way down to the Chasm where it's going to be held."
People start leaving. Some going to their jobs and others like me to the trial. A funny feeling rises in my stomach. I don't know the cause. Maybe, it's because I never thought that I would see my two sworn enemies put to trial. Or maybe it's because...it's the first time I'll be seeing Tris since we got married.
I walk along with the others, debating on the two options. Christiana's waving hand makes me snap out of it.
"What?" I ask her.
"We're here! So, you might want to be a bit more alert since we're in the Chasm and you don't want to walk off the edge." She tells me.
"Right!" At once I become more alert and push away all thoughts of the past to focus on the present.
There are chairs arranged in rows for the people to sit on and there is a little platform with two chairs on it along with several more chairs for some of the leaders who are going to attend. I'm still looking around at the arrangement when I feel a tap on my shoulder.
I turn around to find my wife there.
"Hey!" I say.
"Hi!" She replies.
After a few moments of silence she asks. "This is going to turn out to be pretty awkward, isn't it?"
I shake my head and pull her to me. I kiss her without worrying about all the onlookers. She kisses me back but pulls away after a few seconds.
"I can't believe we're actually married." She says.
I nod. "Me neither."
Evelyn walks over to us. "Hello Tris!" She extends her hand which Tris shakes.
"Hello Mrs. Eaton!" Tris replies.
"Mrs. Eaton? That's hardly the appropriate name to use anymore. Just call me Evelyn." She tells her.
"Okay." Tris smiles.
"How are you two doing? I mean, married life." She says, which makes me groan and Tris laugh and in the end she replies.
"I think we're doing pretty well. Though, this is the first time we're actually spending together."
"Alright then! I'll leave you two to it." She says, walking away.
Tris turns to me. "Your mother's sweet."
I scoff. "Yeah, that's just recent change. She turned over a new leaf."
Tris leans into me and I wrap an arm around her, holding her close to me as we watch people finalizing all the preparations. Soon, a leader who only shows up for serious matters appears on the platform and says.
"Will you all please take your seats?"
I'm pretty sure that everyone heard him but as typical Dauntless behavior they ignore him and carry on doing whatever they were. If it had been Marcus they would've listened at once. But it isn't so it takes some time to settle everyone down.
Zeke, Tris, several leaders and I are sitting in the front row with Evelyn and the guest behind us and everyone else is behind them.
The leader says. "Bring the two of them forward."
Marcus and Eric are marched forward by guards and are made to sit on chairs facing us. When they walk past us, Tris's hand clutches mine and I give it a little reassuring squeeze.
"What Marcus and Eric did could've affected two people's lives forever." This proclamation is met by cheers from the Dauntless but Tris sits there quietly next to me staring at Eric. I look at him to find him glaring at her as the leader speaks on.
I lean closer to Tris and whisper. "Just ignore him." She gives me a little nods and averts her eyes from him.
When the leader finishes speaking about their crime me move onto something that was completely unexpected.
"And Mr. Zeke." This makes him sit up straighter next to me. "What did you think you were doing?" He asks.
"Umm what do you mean?" He asks.
"I mean that what do you think you were doing when you took up the place of a leader and authorized their wedding?"
"Umm..." He starts to speak but the leader cuts in. "And that brings us to the conclusion. These two are going to made Factionless."
"What?!" Tris exclaims but it's drowned by cheers from the Dauntless. She turns to me with a huge smile on her face. I hug her and when we pull away she has tears in her eyes.
"Why're you crying?" I ask, concerned.
"I'm so happy right now. I can't believe we finally get to be together without worrying." I smile at her and put an arm around her. Once the others have calmed he continues.
"And since they are now Factionless we have two vacant seats for leaders and since Mr. Zeke has taken it upon himself already. He's one of them and the other will be soon decided. Thank you for attending."
Eric and Marcus are marched over to us. The guards behind them says. "You have one minute to say whatever you have to."
"I have nothing to say and I don't want to hear anything else either." With this I grab Tris's hand and pull her away from the Chasm.
"Are you alright?" She asks me.
Without a word I turn to her and smash my lips against hers. She loops an arms around my neck and leans into me. I touch my forehead to hers and say.
"As long as we're together, nothing else matters."
It' my birthday today! So, yaay! FourTris is official! I saw how many people were happy about it. I am too because FourTris is life <4
