[Chapter 33] Reassurance.

"Kate."

The moment I hear the gasp, I spin around but Tris is nowhere in sight. I turn back around to look at the body which is lying here on the cold floor, all alone.

I see Eric climb onto a rock and shouts over all the chaos. "Listen up!"

This grabs everyone's attention and all heads turn towards him.

"Tonight, we'll gather in the Pit to pay our respects to Kate and to honor her Dauntless personality. What she did took guts and that's what being a Dauntless is all about."

People applaud as he ends his speech but I just look at him in disbelief.

I turn to the Initiates standing behind me. Emily is in Henry's arms and sobbing into his shirt. I know that this would've been Tris and me, if she hadn't run away.

"There won't be any Initiation today. You guys can do whatever you want."

For some reason my voice sounds sad too. I guess that's because some time back I actually cared for this girl and then found out all that she was going through. Struggling to hide her fear about being lesbian.

I start to walk away when a voice makes me turn around. "It's all your fault."

I know who it is before I even look at the person. Henry. He's standing there with a sobbing Emily in his arms. Tears brim his own eyes.

"Look. I'm not in the mood for an argument since it won't do any of us much good." With this I walk back to the apartment, hoping to bump into Tris on the way.

But I don't. I push open the door to find Evelyn sitting on the couch. She looks shaken too. I want to smack my forehead. She was her initiate too.

"I'm sorry about Kate." She says, softly.

"Yeah. Me too." With this I start to make my way to my room but bump into Eric. How could he get here so fast?

"It was an impressive speech, right?" He asks.

"No. It wasn't. Someone just committed suicide and you called it brave! It was like giving people incentive to follow her." I do my best to contain my anger.

He sighs and shakes his head. "You're just really worked up about how you couldn't get her and now there's no chance at all."

Before I can punch him, he walks away. Chucking to himself. How can he try to be funny at times at these? No wonder he's such a bad brother.

I take a shower and put on black clothes. Dauntless don't have mourning clothes since black is our color. I choose a more sophisticated outfit that usual.

Black t-shirt with black pants instead of jeans and a black sweater instead of my usual hoodie.

After slipping on my sneakers, I go down for lunch. It's no surprise that the Dauntless are chattering as usual. They always seem to be full of energy.

Tris doesn't show up for lunch either. In "honor" of Kate's death, they served fizzy drinks which I know Tris loves.

After lunch the day goes on till night arrives. By the time I get to the Pit most of the people are already there and the leaders are assembled on a raised platform with Kate behind them on a table.

Marcus is the one who speaks this time.

"We're all gathered here to remember how a Dauntless member sacrificed her life. This is what we call a true Dauntless. No matter what happens she'll always be alive in our hearts for this very reason."

I feel like I'm going to throw up because he's literally begging people to follow her and jump into the Chasm.

Hearing him say this makes me want to throw up, so I simply leave just as Marcus raises a toast to her.

I roam around the empty hallways till I reach a corner from where I can see some blonde hair peaking out.

It has to be Tris because she was the only one not there.

I sneak up to her and round the corner only to find her sitting on the floor, staring at the opposite wall. Oblivious to the fact that I'm standing right next to her.

Well, actually she knows that I'm here because without looking up she says. "What are you doing here?"

"I just felt like throwing up after Marcus's speech, so I left." I decide to come clean.

"It's just wrong on so many levels." She says, burying her face into her hands. I crouch down next to her and pry them away.

Tears are rolling down her cheeks and she hastily wipes them away. This catches me off guard.

"Look, Tris. We were all close to her and she was a really sweet person. (Like @tiff_any said)So, there's nothing to cry about since she decided her fate on her own." I explain.

"You don't get it do you?" She asks me.

"What?" I ask confused.

"Kate was from Abnegation. They're supposed to be selfless. They never think about themselves and when you commit suicide you're only thinking about yourself. You don't care about how others will feel." She tells me.

I raise an eyebrow at her. "And where does this little speech leave us?"

She gives a small laugh. "You can so stupid, Tobias." Then she adds. "Something must have made her do it."

Then it hits me. "No. No. Her death is not your fault."

She shakes her head and more tears spill out. "Stop saying that. You don't know the whole story and hearing you say this only makes it worse."

"I don't understand." I really don't.

I looks up at me and then says. "She came to me. She confessed her fear and told me that she had a crush on me." I start to speak but I silences me. "I told her that I wasn't interested and that I had you. This broke her."

"How is all this your fault?" I ask still confused.

"She spilt her secret, hoping that I would start dating her. Hoping that her dream of us being together would come true. And instead of explaining anything, I just said 'no' and walked away."

She snaps her fingers. "Just like that."

"But Tris..." I'm seriously shaken with what she just told me.

"Now, you hate me too? Don't you?" She asks, looking down at her hands.

I get hold of them and say. "Look at me." She doesn't listen, so I repeat. "Tris, look at me."

This time she does.

"Listen. You're over thinking things. You told her what you had to. Sure you triggered something. But that 'something' was already there. You didn't plant it in her brain. You get what I mean?"

She nods.

I sigh. "Good."

I pull her to me and hold her close. She buries her head into my shoulder and we both sit there with our own problems gnawing at our insides.

This chapter is quite long and for a good reason too.

This might be the last time, I'll be updating for a while now. My exams start from Monday so I need to focus on my studies.

They end on 29 May. Hopefully, I'll be able to fit in a short update somewhere in between. If not then I promise that I will, first thing after I get back from school on 29.

Though, I said that I had to focus on my studies but I know that I'll be thinking about you all and what you're doing.

During this time please get more people to read the story and I'll see how much the reads/votes/comments have increased :)

Uh...That's pretty much all I have to say...wait!

I have to tell you about one more thing. I have to make a speech on Wednesday. And guess what topic I picked, "over coming my fears." Divergent has influenced my school life too.

Wow! This is the longest author's note, I've ever written.

Anyways, stay tuned for more updates...after my exams :)
