Twenty Six

Sam watched the Mercedes SUVs drive past his car park again. Obviously they were having trouble finding their destination. The engine of the little car ticked as the hot metal cooled in the rain. He reached for the radio to see what stations he could find here but after skimming through half a dozen songs he hated he decided sitting in the dark in silence was the better option. He looked up at the sky. The rain had lessened but not stopped. The drive back to London was going to be miserable. Light flashed in the rear view mirror and Sam saw one of the Mercedes pull into his car park while the other drove around the office park perimeter again.

Lyn sealed up the first batch of samples, made a careful check of the temperature readings and prepared another bag.

The Mercedes pulled up in the disabled bay closest to the door. Two men jumped out, but not the driver. Sam saw one of them point at his car. The other at the building. The driver looked like he was making a phone call. Something was off about the whole scene but Sam couldn't tell why. Although they had looked at his car no-one had looked at the driver's seat in an effort to make eye contact. They hadn't seen him. Sam felt that was good.

One of the men walked up to the doors and stepped inside. The inner doors denied him. He rattled it and tapped on the glass to get the attention of the guard, who almost fell of his seat again. Sam could see the guard shaking his head, and the man outside gesturing, pleading. The guard said something into a microphone which the men outside must have heard. They kicked the door in anger and left. One of them stared at the Fiat. The other got into the Mercedes.

Lyn closed fridge door, checked the temperature of the second bag and sealed it up. Job done, she replaced the gloves on their hook, signed out, and left, making sure the door was closed safely behind her. She started for the stairs.

Sam pressed himself back into the seat. He felt uneasy. The men were not acting like people simply gaining late night access to a storage unit, and besides, they clearly didn't have any key cards to get it. And they were becoming worryingly interested in the Fiat. One of them took a few steps closer then stopped abruptly. He turned around and sauntered back to the Mercedes like he was trying too hard to be casual. Sam saw one hand and waist level gesturing something.

They knew he was there.

The driver picked up his phone again, and Lyn stepped through the doorway into the rain.

The two men rushed at her. Sam saw her freeze. Her body language screamed panic. Sam started the car. The lights on the Mercedes sprang to life and one of the men made a grab for Lyn. She yelped and leapt backward for the safety of the building and reflexively swung the bag in her right hand. It caught the man on the shoulder but didn't slow him down. He lunged forward bodily and picked her up. She swung again but the bags made for useless weapons. The second man opened the door to the Mercedes and urged his comrade forward. Sam squealed the Fiat into reverse, catching their attention. He accelerated backward, turned the car to face the Merc, switched the headlights to full beam held down the horn and drove forward.

Fearing for his life the man holding the door jumped to one side. Sam swerved at the last moment and turned away from the Mercedes. Lyn and her attacker struggled in the glare of the headlights. Beside him the Mercedes reversed at speed and spun one hundred and eighty degrees. Someone crashed into Sam's window and pulled at the door handle. Sam obliged him and burst through it, stepping up and forward. Lyn screamed as she was half carried, half dragged away from the Fiat and toward the Mercedes which was now reversing into position.

Sam grappled with his opponent for a moment then twisted and smashed his head into the top of the open door. The man staggered, stunned from the blow. Sam locked his arms around the mans neck and shoulder and squeezed. he felt the shoulder pop and shoved the man to the floor.

Lyn was still struggling and had managed to get in a half-decent blow with one of the bags. The fight dislodged the umbrella from her bag and it fell to the floor. Sam bent down and grabbed it as he ran. The door to the Mercedes was still open and Lyn was flung inside. The man jumped in as the car started moving. Sam ran to the back of the car, rolling the umbrella up tightly, and rammed it home into the exhaust. The Mercedes drove away. Sam ran back to the Fiat and jumped in. The wheels spun on the slick ground until the car found traction and kicked forward. The Mercedes was at the first turn on the business park access roads, and heading for the main road. Proving the maxim that the shortest distance between two points was a straight line Sam roared the little car through the shrubbery separating road from car park. Wet leaves exploded from the bushes and clung to the windscreen. The wipers flicked back and forth once and Sam hoped his plan would work. The Mercedes choked and rolled to a stop. The driver jumped out to find the problem and Sam ran him down. he skipped aside at the last moment. Sam rammed his foot on the brake even while shifting into reverse. The car backed up quickly, but just off the line. The driver of the Merc stepped to one side to dodge the car. Sam kicked open the door and hooked him against the bodywork. The fiat skidded to a halt and the man fell. Sam slammed the door closed on his hand, kicked him away, and drove to the Mercedes one more time.

The last man was struggling against both his need to escape and a furious Lyn, and with no backup available the woman scorned was letting loose her fury. Sam screeched to a halt, jumped out and flung open the door to the Mercedes. He reached in and grabbed Lyn as the drivers hand clawed backward trying to stop him. Sam locked his wet fingers around the mans wrist and snapped his elbow over the seatback. Ignoring the screams Lyn took Sams hand and they jumped into the Fiat and sped away.

The hard acceleration knocked Lyn off balance as Sam ignored street signs and speed bumps. A glance in the mirror showed him the Mercedes wasn't following but his heart sank as the second SUV pulled up alongside the first, paused, and then sped after them.
