Chapter 12- Flying Free

"FLYING IS LEARNING HOW TO THROW YOURSELF AT THE GROUND AND MISS."  -Douglas Adams

ONYX WENT WITH her Uncle to his rather extravagant home for the summer although she did return to the school occasionally to check up on Miss Norris and Mr. Filch. Strangely he seemed rather fond of the quickly growing white-haired girl, as did Miss Norris.

And despite his slightly scary appearance, Onyx knew Mr. Filch had a kind heart and she was one of the few people who knew the true story behind Miss Norris.

The man's cat had once been, and technically still was, his girlfriend. During his first few years as a caretaker and when Reyna Norris was in her sixth year the Ministry tried to restart the Triwizard Tournament. Reyna did really well reaching the wounded unicorn in the first task faster than anybody else and in the second task dueling against a statue come to life and winning. But, the third task was too much. Durmstrang's headmistress, at the time, was a death eater and besides that really wanted her champion to win. Considering they had to find the Triwizard cup in the forbidden forest before nightfall she snuck into the forest after the Champions and went after the one with the most points Reyna. Onyx didn't know why transfiguring a human into a cat was the first spell the headmistress thought of but that was what she did.

However, despite the odds, Reyna still won the competition as she found the Triwizard cup first. She had jumped into the goblet like trophy and instantly it transported her back outside the forest and instantly Argus shot up seeing the fact that the cup was back but the winning champion wasn't. However, after a closer look, he realized there was a cat with exactly the same color fur as Reyna's hair. She even had the markings on her paws and legs of where Reyna wore he bracelets and rings.

And since then Argus hadn't ever stopped looking for a way to return her to normal. But, alas he wasn't there yet.

It was the day before school and Onyx was in the forest with her mother asking her questions.

"What have some of the past talismans for the Daughter of the Dragons been?" Onyx asked curiously from her spot on a rock. She was lying on her stomach reading a school textbook idly while swinging her feet.

Drakon opened one eye from her spot curled up on the forest floor, "Well, Media, the Daughter before you had a talisman that was a metal disk with a sun printed on it."

Another thought occurred to Onyx as she asked, "What were her powers?"

"Well for one she could burn people just by touching them," Drakon said nonchalantly.

Merlin that's cool Onyx thought as continued reading without actually taking anything in.

Her mind was racing with questions. All of which she knew could not be answered by anything other than time.

But being the impatient little thing she was she still wanted to know things like what her talisman and powers would be.

"Hey, mum," Onyx asked.

"Yes, Onyx." She replied not bothering to open her eyes at this point.

"At what age do most Daughter of the Dragons show signs of their powers?"

Drakon opened both of her eyes and sat up a kind and motherly tone coming into her voice, "Onyx, Dragon Daughters have shown signs of their powers from infancy all the way to age 17. Just because you haven't shown signs of your power yet doesn't mean anything is wrong or different about you."

Onyx sighed. 17 years old was a long long long way away.

She really did not want to wait that long to find out what she was capable of doing.

Sensing her daughter's impatience Drakon made a suggestion, "Why don't we go for a fly."

Instantly Onyx perked up as she hadn't had very much chance to use her wings the year prior, "Sure!"

She climbed quickly up Drakon's leg and settled herself in between two of the rubbery spines on her mother's back.

"Ready." The white-haired girl called out.

Instantly the rush of wind and adrenaline Onyx felt as Drakon flapped into the air calmed her racing mind down. If there was one thing she was good at it was riding a dragon.

Drakon let out a roar as she flew her glittering white scales turning her into something almost too bright to look at.

Knowing her mother had no idea where she was going Onyx smiled before gesturing to the left with her toe.

Then Drakon began to twist.

"WOOOOOHOOOOOOO!" Onyx cried into the wind as she barrel rolled through the air. Her words were whipped away into the wind but she didn't care.

It felt good to have fun.

It felt good to be happy.

It felt good to be free.
