Chapter 7 (Pt. 4) - Cody
The trial continued, without much to dwell on for Cody. His thoughts were of his wife, and his daughter. For a reason he couldn't determine, he remembered the day Evelyn had been born. His wife fell into labor at eleven at night, after they'd both fallen asleep.
She had woken up because of a random, bearable pain. It wasn't anything major, so the woman didn't think much of it. After the next pain, however, she got up, and woke her husband. Cody had put on a shirt, thinking they'd be going out to the hospital, but his wife defied the idea.
Her contractions had been slow, and almost painless at first, quite manageable. For some reason, they thought it wouldn't get any worse, and they decided to take care of it in the bathroom at home on their own. Having a kid at a hospital was far too expensive, and Cody was still paying off his student loans. Not to mention they'd only just bought this exquisite house, and their savings were dwindling on close-to-empty.
By the time the first hour was up, the contractions caused the woman to vomit. Cody was with her every step of the way, tying back her hair, whispering sweet nothings in her ear, assuring her that this baby was going to be the most gorgeous girl they'd ever laid eyes on. He'd cleaned up her vomit, helped to undress her, and rest her in the warm water of the tub. He remembered her distinctly saying that it helped with the pains.
During those long hours, the two never separated. Cody was there the entire time, acting as a midwife. Sure he had his medical license, but it wasn't like he had anesthesia at home. His wife had wanted a completely-natural birth for their first child.
She had been strong, and determined. He loved that about her. She wasn't the type to order a salad on a date or call herself fat and ugly after licking a donut. If she wanted something done, it got done. And at seven the next morning, just as the sun's caring embrace warmed the room and hugged the couple, a sobbing baby girl was born.
Cody cried more than his wife did at that time, since she was so exhausted. He cleaned his daughter up, swaddled her in her first blanket, and cradled her until her mother was conscious enough to hold her for the first time. Their first little one. The love of their lives. She was the best mixture of both her parents. Little Evelyn. His Princess.
Cody snapped back to attention when he noticed voices begin to fill the room. "What happened?" He asked Schmidt, who was packing up beside him. "What?" The lawyer snickered, as though amused by the question. "The jury left for about an hour, and came back fairly split on their verdict. Eventually, a majority-vote was allowed, and you were sentenced to Lighthouse Psychiatric Hospital indefinitely or as long as it takes to treat your sickness." He neatly arranged his papers, and tapped them against the desk for good measure. "We got what we wanted, Mr. Lewis. You did it."
(Gosh DARN, every once in a while I just HAVE to remind everyone that Cody is a human and only a monster behind closed doors. What's YOUR verdict, guys? Do you love him? Hate him!? TELL ME THE FEELS!!)
