Chapter 13 (Pt. 2) - Cody
This time as Cody cleaned trash up from the yard, he was alone. With every piece of paper or broken crayon he collected, he feared that the nurses really had seen the kiss. He had to calm himself with the remembrance that he was the one to kiss her, so if they had, they'd come for him, first. He had no idea it would be so taboo to the staff if a romantic relationship built up between patients! Didn't they want these people to be as human and normal as possible?
The man lifted a shiny piece of aluminum foil off the ground. It must've been from this afternoon's lunch, which was some mushy 'baked potato' they somehow ruined the flavor of. Staring into the jumbled reflection of a person, he realized something. These workers were paid to be here. None of them were true and friendly with their patients. Even the staff saw them as prisoners. It really was their plan to eradicate all sense of humanity, so that they would remain with a job. That was why they never got a release date, even in regards to fairly-healthy people such as Cosette. She was trapped, in a place that never planned on letting her go. They all were.
The man stared at that bitter reflection. For some reason, he couldn't get himself out of his head. It was strange. It was different in a weird kind of way. Who was Cody Lewis? He wasn't a model citizen with the guise of a murderer. He was a murderer with the guise of a model citizen. He wasn't an amazing father who did everything his daughter needed. He wasn't there half the time, almost neglectful in that sense. He wasn't an amazing lover that the few women he cared about would fall all over because of his rustic charms.
He was a creep who apparently frightened the women and brought himself upon them at the wrong place, at the wrong time. His first kiss with his wife had been just as awkward as that kiss with Cosette, because he'd done it in front of her parents without even realizing they were walking into the room. She'd panicked so much that she'd smacked him. Cosette wouldn't have had that luxury, not in this place. The man's shoulders fell. soft brown hair fell over his eyes. Was this who he was? A monster? A creep? Was he really Dr. Demise?
The man let a small breath slip back his lips. He dropped the foil in his bag, then lifted the next piece of trash off the ground. "When I get out of here, I'm going to be a better father. I'm going to be a better man." He told himself. There was a strain on his chest, a tightness. Something that urged him never to utter such hypocritical words again. The human body and mind feared stupendous change more than an agonizing normalcy. He'd just have to remind himself that the change would be for the better, for himself and his daughter alike. Perhaps he could be redeemed yet. He could only hope that the others around him would be able to forgive him for his treachery.
"Lewis!" A rubbery voice bellowed from across the yard. He lifted his head, and turned just enough to see the other male marching toward him. Hugo was more of a beast than a man. "You have a visitor."
